Hi all,
I'm relatively new to gardening and don't have a huge space to use for
it; however, I've ordered 3 thornless boysenberry plants from Henry
Field's this year and am planning to grow several kinds of veggies,
flowers, bulbs, etc.
My question is this: can anyone provide me with tips, techniques,
comments, and/or suggestions about growing these plants? I am
especially concerned about whether they will need some type of
trellising when they really start growing (such as grapes, etc.)?
Right now I have a large area of back yard fence that I'm going to use
for espalier. I've got a red flame seedless grape on order, plus a
dwarf Sweet Haven peach tree (by the way, I'm in north Dallas, border of
Zone 7/8 I believe) that will be trained along 4 wires I've secured to
the sturdy fence posts on that fence. My 3 thornless boysenberries will
go along that back fence, too, spaced at even intervals of about 8 feet.
I was considering putting up some more of the wires along the area
where the boysenberries will be growing to support the canes as they
grow and pruning the canes if they grow too far out of the growing area
I've got. Is this going to be adequate, or even necessary?
Any information you can provide for me will be much-appreciated.
Thanks,
Joan
