We put in a birch last year and the leaves look healthy and it's
growing fine. However, near the bottom the bark appears peeled off
revealing the light colored wood underneath. Is this normal for a
birch, or is some animal gnawing away?
Thanks/Barry

Some Birch trees do this at certain times of the year...if you think it
might be an animals, you might want to protect the bark with burlap or put
down some flour to see it there are any animal tracks.

Mature birch bark is supposed to 'peel' away to show the lighter
colored wood beneath. That is part of the appeal. --jaye
