Every garden is different, so we all have to just feel our way and figure out
what these terms mean in our own individual gardens. Here's what they mean to
me.
partial sun: more time in the sun than in shade, and preferably not in the
darkest shade cast by buildings and really dense trees.
partial shade: more time in the shade than in the sun, again perferably not in
really dark shade of buildings etc.
Light shade: under the branches of a high tree where sunlight is dappled.
Full sun: sun through tyhe whole day. For me about 6 hours of bright sun is
enogh to meet the full sun requirement, but then I'm in California where the
light is really bright.
Hope this helps.

Ambiguous, isn't it?
Partial sun and partial shade are basically the same thing; either dappled
sunlight all day, or less than 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. I'd say
that light shade probably falls into the latter catagory.
Full sun means that a site will recieve at least 6 hours of sun each day
between 10AM and 6PM. (In many northern gardens, plants requiring full
sun will need 8 hrs of sunlight, since the light is less intense than in
the warmer southern zones.)
