I've got a huge sack of regular baking flour that's way past it's shelf
life. I'm hesitant about dumping the entire contents into the composter.
Can this stuff be scattered throughout the lawn or dug into the top soil as
fertilizer? Thanks for any advice.

hmmm...tough one....what I'd do is take some and sprinkle it in a test area.
If nothing happens, then it's ok to sprinkle it wherever you want. It
couldn't hurt compost I don't think. Maybe even add to its lightness. It's
make from wheat most likely, which is a plant of course, so I wouldn't think
that it would do any harm even if it is bleached flour. It may do some good,
who knows! Maybe it's course enough to stop snails or other soft-bodied
insects. Or maybe the ants would eat it all. I just don't know. But at
least, I have a few ideas for you to try or think about.

I'd put it in the compost. Mix it in, so it doesn't form a doughy mass. It
should do no harm to your compost, and will in fact, add to it.

I had the same problem with a 5 pound bag I found "lost" in my cupboard last
year. I just threw the hole thing onto the compost pile and mixed it in.
No worries. No problems I think the wee beasties kinda' like the stuff. It
actually disappeared pretty fast.

One more thing. To keep flour from going old, just pop the bag in the
freezer. It doesn't get hard like ice, just cold. I have had a bag in there
for nearly 2 years because I'm not big on baking or cooking. But after all
that time, it still cooked like a dream and didn't affect the food. Plus it
keeps the weavils out. Same thing with corn meal.
