After lurking here for 2 years, I've finally found an occasion to post!!
I recently got myself a digital camera and have been shooting everything
in sight. My favorite subjects are flowers and I've put together an
album of flower pictures at http://members2.clubphoto.com/pam213172/
The "What's blooming in December?" album is a collection of flowers blooming
here in nothern CA this time of the year.
Click on the thumbnails to see the larger pictures. (most are 640x480,
the first three are unmodified, straight-out-of-the-camera, full size at
1280x960) Sorry I accidentally made the thumbnails so large.
I don't know the names of a lot of the flowers (none of them are mine)
and some I probably got wrong. I would really appreciate it if you
could email me or leave a note in the guest book...or post here if you
know what they are. (Either common or scientific name is fine; if you
know one, you can always look up the other.) More specific info would
be really nice, too. (i.e., is "poppy 1" Iceland poppy? Or is it
Shirley? How does one tell the difference?)
Disclaimer: I'm a total amateur in both gardening and photography. These
are pretty unspectacular pictures of (probably) mostly unspectacular
flowers. So don't expectt too much!!
Thanks,
pam

Mallow: Hibiscus? I have purple red but sure it must come in blue. Is this
blooming now?
15 = Alstromeria Mine had its last flower a couple of weeks ago.

I'll grab pictures of what's blooming in my state for you and put them up,
but I have to warn you, it's only Christmas cactus and Orchids. I have lots
of orchids in bloom, but everything is inside, of course. The only thing
that grows outside this time of year is the piles of snow. We don't have any
yet but they're on the way.
Envious in Maryland.

Lurked for 2 YEARS. You have more self control than me.
You'd have to cut off my fingers to keep me quiet that long.
Welcome aboard. It's the rules you can't go back into lurk
mode once you've posted.
The pictures are lovely.

This was an excellent thread, because 2 gardeners delurked at once!
I hope that you will tell us more about your garden.

It's smaller and has different leaves than the other hibiscus I've seen. (Not
that I know a lot about hibiscus either!) Also the flowers hang down facing
the ground. (Thus the sky as background) That picture was taken December 20
but I still see them around blooming. (The hibiscus also bloom year-round.)

Thanks. I've updated the page.

I suppose I'll try to follow up with the "What's blooming in January?"
album soon!

I'm posting this way late, but in case you're still reading this thread:
The photo you've labeled "Mallow?" (on Jan 26) is Lavatera
assurgentiflora, commonly called a Tree Mallow. It's in the Malvaceae
family. (I have a huge one in the yard that really needs its winter
pruning now that we're finally getting some rain!)
The Cistus is more specifically Cistus purpureus, common name Orchid Rockrose.
And you're right, that's an African Daisy; it also goes by the lovely
common name of Freeway Daisy, or botanical name Osteospermum fruticosum.
