I live on the south coast UK, and have a bush full of sloe fruits
(similar to damsons or plums). Traditionally sloes are used to make
sloe gin or sloe wine.

Anybody have any recipes for using sloes in other things? Any
information would be welcome.

Here in Sweden sloe is used mostly for syrup or liqueur. They must
freeze first to remove some of the bitterness. Sometimes one is
recommended to put them in the freezer but the taste gets better if
they are left to freeze on the bush. I don't grow sloe myself, it is
one of our most common wild shrubs so there is no need to cultivate it.

The syrup is made like any other kind. I don't have a recipe off hand.
If your are interested I can look it up. I don't know if you English
are familiar with these kind of fruit drinks at all? I know the
Americans are not.

The syrup is then diluted with water and makes a very good drink on its
own (kids love it) or added to white wine like cassis to make a kind of
Kir. This "Kir" made either with sloe, elderberry syrup or elderflower
syrup and any cheap white wine is our favourite summer drink, with
sliced strawberries or sliced cucumber, depending on the season. At our
parties children get the same drink without the wine which makes them
quite happy!

Of course ! Sloe wine, sloe champagne, sloe flavoured gin, sloe liqueur (and
distilled, sloe brandy - a bit like slimovitz) - a find natural resource.

The dry summer this year has meant that the sloes are small and infrequent but
we've enough for the gin so far. For the others it *is* best to wait until
the first frost .... if you dare risk other less picky folk getting there
before you !

Incidentely there is European Commission sponsored interest in commercialising
these 'wild' crops with sloe and elderberry 'plantations' being planted in
Germany and France.

But I didn't mean any of these alcoholic drinks, I know you have them allright. I mean plain fruit syrup or boiled juice that you di=
lute with 3-4 parts water. It's what kids used to drink in this country before orange juice and soda pop and coke were heard of, sti=
ll do. We make it from all
kinds of berries and fruits. Kids consider (or used to consider) themselves very badly off if they had rhubarb or gooseberry syrup a=
nd strawberry and raspberry syrup are the most popular. I remember when I was a kid (a very
long time ago) that I envied those who had storebought syrup or soft drinks
and didn't always appreciate my mothers homemade drinks, especially not the
mixes she made. I wish I had some of her black currant and apple syrup now
when it is too late...

i've personally, always dreamed of having a sloe screw.

a(n) unicorn is slightly bigger than an arabian horse and yet smaller than
pegasus. she/he does not have wings nor more than one horn on its head.
