Hi:

I live in San Francisco Bay area (San Jose). I have a persimmon tree
that just started to bear fruits this year. Somehow, the fruits keep
dropping. Everyday, lots of fruits fell down. I'm afraid by the time
it's ripe, there is no fruit left on the tree.

Any idea why this is happening? The tree is FuYu Persimmon.

Thanks a lot.

-Alex

I am not an expert but I do have a fuyu. If this is the first year of
bearing, I am surprised you are getting "lots of fruit dropping.' There just
should not be that much. You might consider thinning to retain only a few
for the harvest season and lower the stress on the tree. There is a good
chance that you will have no fruit next year.

Quote from McGregor:

"Gould (1940) concluded there are pollination problems with Oriental persimmons
just as there are with many other fruits. Some cultivars will develop some
fruit to maturity without pollination, whereas other cultivars drop their fruit
prematurely or fail entirely to set without pollination."

I have not worked with persimmon, but in general, excessive fruit abortion
either signifies fruit tree stress, or inadequate pollination (not enough
pollen grains to equal the number of incipient seeds).

You can check further with McGregor's pollination "bible" which is outdated
but has some information on persimmons at:
http://bee.airoot.com/beeculture/book/chap5/persimmon.html

There are also some notes at the California Rare Fruit Growers:

Sunset's Western Garden Book says fruit drop is common with young
persimmons. It also says uneven or inconsistent feeding or watering can
cause fruit drop. It recommends feeding in late winter or early spring and
not overdoing the nitrogen because too much will cause fruit drop.

I have the same problem in So. Cal. I hate seeing all those beautiful
fruits dropping. Sigh. Will wait for next year.

BTW, do you think tose fertilizer spikes will do the job?

fruit drop is common in young trees, trees under stress and trees that have
overset. my 2 year old dwarf fruit trees dropped a lot of fruit and I
didnt rush to thin em out, preferring to let the tree do the thinning. the
fruit that is left is good sized. Ingrid
