I transplanted my 5 foot blue spruce in April. It had new growth
on the tips at that time and seemed to be fine. But lately the
tips have turned brown. I moved this tree from a spot in the
yard where the roots on two sides of the tree went under the
cement sidewalk...so I had to cut these roots to free the tree.
Will this tree survive? Is it normal to have some brown spots
on the tips? We have had some very hot, dry stretches. Tho' I
have been somewhat diligent in watering the newly planted
shrubs. This is my first year with the spruce, so I am not sure
what its normal growth cycle is supposed to be. Any comments or
ideas?

Thanks,

I'm not sure where you are located but GENERALLY speaking blue spruces
don't do well at all in most climates outside of mountainuous areas.
But it sounds like the root pruning has really set it back. hang on!
If at had roots under the side walk it probably didn't have too many
as it was probably dry under there and not a great place for roots to
grow. Keep it watered well and you may consider so sort of staking
till new roots gets estasblished. Otherwise a strong wind might
cause new root grow to snap. By making flattened bottoms when taking
root balls you can help preventy this kind of movement.

The brown tips are from the tree not being able to take up sufficient
water because of a reduction in the feeder roots due to transplanting.
They are not a good sign but the tree may survive if the whole tree is not
that way and you keep up with your watering. You might also try Ortho's
"Up-Start" or a product called "Roots". They are both supposed to
stimulate root growth. Don't fertilize this year. Good Luck!
