I have a swell nectarine seed that I'd like to sprout and see if it will turn
into a tree after a few years. Any secrets to success?

I tried same with an Indian Peach (blood-red flesh) but no sprout so far.
It's been in a pot with potting soil for a couple months now.

Advice appreciated.

I did this about five years ago and I now have a nectarine that gives a
bucket or two of nectarines every August. I put the seeds directly into the
ground in May (Mark the place!). The tree flowered the third year and gave
some 10 nectarines, last year a bucket full, and this year it's smothered
in fruit.

I've heard that peaches and nectarines come very true from seed. Anyone to
confirm?

Peaches and nectarines do not necessarily grow true. I've grown several
and you never know what you'll get, but my experience was that most are
not as good as the original. I did, however, get one spectacular new
peach (fuzzy) from a nectarine seed. A company is now evaluating it for
possible patenting. Another consideration: A seedling rootstock may not
be as nematode/disease resistant as a good variety grafted on a proven
rootstock. If you have the room, it's fun to try! Don Chapman.
