You did not mention the plant size, but old plants tend to present a length
of stem which is no longer attractive.
My tried and true method is to cut the stem leaving some of it remaining in
the existing soil/pot.
The excised portion and several of the aerial roots can be replanted and staked
in a new pot. Both the old and the new should be well watered with a weak
liquid fertilizer solution.
If there is a long portion of the stem on either the remaining or the cutoff
which is unwanted it can be cut off and discarded ........ if you really
want more, it can be planted in wet sand or water and will probably root.
Cutting of the top will allow new growth at the cut of the old plant, and may
produce another but/plant lower down near the soil line. In time these new
plants can be excised and planted. Before too long you may have to buy
a new house because the philos have taken over.
Please let me know how it turns out. Also, do you have other philo species
besides the split leaf??
