Help! My impatiens won't thrive no matter what I try. I've tried everything
- more fertilizer, less fertilizer, more water, less water, more sun, less
sun, etc... Right now they are planted in a semi-drained, part-shade area in
rich soil. They remain only 2-4 inches tall and some are completely stunted,
however, most of them do have flowers. I used to have good luck with them,
but for the past two years, I can't grow them!

What's different now than three years ago? Bigger trees? New building
changing the light? New drainage patterns? New pesticide? New
lawn care company? Did you have disease problems you noticed then?
Have you had a soil analysis? Nematode check?

One year, I got in a hurry to plant my transplants and the soil was
too wet. The result was that the dirt turned into 'concrete', my
impatiens and everything else that year were minature, weakling things!
After a lot of work with a mattock, additions of peatmoss, compost and
cow manure the next spring I got the soil back in shape. Now I'm VERY
patient waiting for the soil to dry enough to plant. Hope this helps.

Simple.... Keep them out of the sun and feed and water as usual

My best looking Impatiens this year are the ones I'd put into pots
last fall for a little bit of 'summer' across the winter. Come spring
I put them out on the deck and now they look like the ones in those
flower books! The new ones purchased this year, 48 to a flat - $11,
are in a shady part of the yard and I'm quite disappointed. Half of
them barely have flower buds. Two weeks ago I moved some of these to
pots in preperation for next winter and placed them up on the deck.
Blooms galore! I'm now of the mind that they need a lot more sun than
I'd been led to believe by the gardening books.

This year I made a wide selection of colours to insure a lively
display all winter.

Since you've tried everything, and it all sounds right to me, I'd go back to the
source where you bought them. Have you tried Miracle-Gro? That always works
for me. My impatiens are the best in the neighborhood!

>Please give me more info on your planting techniques---did you remove most of the growing medium from around the roots before you planted your impatiens? More and more nurseries are growing in soil-less mixes and frequently plants never make the root transition from potting mix to garden soil. If you didn't remove the potting mix, try lifting one of your plants out of the ground and see if the roots have increased and spread into the garden. If not, there's the start of your problem.
