Watched GARDENING BY THE YARD last night on HGTV.
What a stupid show! Does this Bob Villa wannabe think he's funny, informative,
or both? Well, I got a bulletin for him.
Immediately following, SURPRISE GARDEN.
What the hell is this show supposed to show other than if you have an endless
supply of money, you can hire the population of Rhode Island to clean up and
prepare your filthy "garden" area, and then plant mature plants, trees already
capable of producing fruit and shade. etc.
And this is all done in one day while you sit inside your house with your hand
over your eyes, waiting for the big surprise at the end of the day.
Do you think the new "I are a gardener" maintains the garden his/her self, or
has Jerry Baker come in monthly to pour stale beer over everything?

aww gee whiz Tom, whereas I agree with you about Suprise gardener, you
don't like the gardening guy, Paul James? He actually makes me laugh
because he's so refreshingly goofy about things, but so far i haven't
found any advice he's given to be wrong, he has been involved with
horticulture for over 20 years, but then again, maybe his brand of humor
isn't to your acceptance, and i can understand and not prejudge you. I
myself am a silly person sometimes and enjoy other people being free
enough to be that way themselves, and not so stiff.
Now I understand your despising Suprise gardening, that show is the
reason i call HGTV and complain (local call for me here in Dandridge)
and I suggest we gardeners get out in to the internet and complain to
remove this tripe and purchase rights to Gardening Naturally from
Barbara Damrosche and Elliot Coleman and see if they would be interested
in a working contract for their show. Keep the world gardening
specials, keep Gardeners Diary and Gardening Journal, maybe buy the new
Perennial Gardener and keep Jeff Cox's Grow it! because we are facinated
by his gold tooth and childlike love for all plants.
But geeze, Tom, can't we keep Gardening by the yard? Paul James ain't
that bad. I just wish HGTV would run that neat short special they did
on Great Gardeners, hosted by Peter Seabrook and Jim Wilson (remember
those guys?) Maybe even steal Tovah Martin and Roger Swaine to do a neat
formatted show on gardening on a real level.

I still like yer style, Tom. lets start e-mailing HGTV to clean uyp
their garden part of the format......ok? madgardener

I agree - that Surprise Gardener show is very foolish!
I like Paul James- as long as he sticks to the point. Sometime the writing
gets out of hand- my son calls him a weirdo! I can see how he can turn off
some folks.
In general, I find that most of these shows don't go into anything deeply.
I find the exchanges on this newsgroup more informative and educational than
HGTV lore. Most folks here appear to be speaking from real experiences
including several failures and successes.
I wish the TV shows focus on either "growing one 'type' of plant" or one
concept (ex. amending clay soils ) and discuss all the pros and cons? Is
there any thing on the tube that uses a serious format?

Oooo! Ooo! I recognized a pun!
I used to wonder why a certain person I know and occasionally loathe hated
Bob Villa. Then I took another look - in the old days, when he had Norm
with him, and treated him worse that the Toolman treated Al on the sitcom -
and then on one show after antoher, and said, "You know what? Bob Villa
DOES stink!"
I like Norm. But that is for a woodworking group, isn't it. And what Bob
Villa knows about gardening could fit in a thimble and leave room for a cat.

Does he have any books out? I need to check. Improve my skills with the

Right after I decide if I should put a little pond in my back garden or not.
I ought post a pic of the raw material I have back there (on the binaries NG

My vote on the worst show is Designer's Landscape. This guy does the
same darn thing show after show. How many times can I watch him draw
a flowerbed in the dirt with his shovel, and or paint can. Come on
HGTV... show me how to prune a tree or shrub, in detail. How many
times can we watch this guy design a flowerbed. I like Gardfening By
The Yard, of course I'm a little silly myself.

My husband put a pond in this spring. It has a 24" deep main pond (6' x 12'),
and an upper 6" deep "bio-pond" (3' x 4') for helping to purify the water and
prevent algae. They are connected by a waterfall. Because we have fish, we are
allowed to add water in the drought by DE state law.

I was amazed to see how many "garden plants" love the pond environment. The
bio-pond is full of mint, lemon balm, and even oxalis weed, growing happily
bare-rooted. We have a crystal-clear lower pond, and no algae.

We also have pots of spiderwort, cannas, and Siberian iris, with the bottom 4"
or so of the pots in the pond. Needless to say, this has helped a lot with
handling the drought! This is in addition to our many specific water plants.

My husband wants to add a "bog" area next to the pond. There are many "garden
plants" that are listed, that I wouldn't have necessarily identified as water
lovers (such as daylilies and asters).

There is a good newsgroup (rec.ponds) for ponders. But our pond is at least as
much garden as it is pond. Ponds are a lot of work, but also a lot of fun!

Hi,

I hate SURPRISE GARDENER too, what a poor show. It appears to be a
knockoff off GROUND FORCE which I catch on BBC America. Still, what you
can do with labor and money, but they show you the proper (read British)
way to do it and you get to see the problems, rain, 6 inches of concrete to
be jack hammered out, fountains exploding water. I actually will stop
gardening to watch it.

Ah Paul, that's the old "ruined" by success story. I used to like "The
Victory Garden" many years ago when it was relevant. Eventually though, it
became "Gardens of the Rich and Famous", and lost its appeal. And the
formerly countercultural "Mother Earth News" magazine went from being a
sometimes stupid (but still worthwhile and interesting) mag to a slick
publication with a totally different bent. It went from "back to the land"
to "life in the 'burbs".

Of course, these things all had to adapt or die, I suppose.

At least he may get some people to consider planting away from the foundation of
the house. Most people plant stuff right up against the foundation and leave the
rest of the yard in lawn with maybe a tree or two randomly located in the lawn.
Then they mound mulch up around the trunk of the tree to provide a nice habitat
for burrowing chipmunks. All this lawn requires that they buy John Deere tractors
to mow with. They're so unmaneuverable that they sometimes accidently chop off
parts of the young trees they planted.

If they'd put in some nice beds and plant groups of trees and shrubs they could
reduce the size of their lawns, thus saving the expense of the tractor. Just my
vent for the day. I LOVE the HGTV bashing because their shows are so STUPID in
general. I hate Garden Architecture because they plop crappy junk down on the lawn,
which will look OK for about 4 days until all that stuff will have to be moved to
mow under. The philosophy of that show is "you can solve all problems by adding
junky lawn ornaments", which is a common practice in these parts. I cannot
understand how people who have 3 junk cars on their lot think that adding a row of
flamingos up against the foundation will enhance the place. I am NOT going to
reveal where I live in this post because to do so would only enforce common
stereotypes about the area.

I used to look forward to "A Gardener's Journal" with Cathy Renwald when it was
shown every weekday morning at 8:30 on HGTV. It is by far the best gardening show
I've seen. She focuses on the plants and gardens instead of her personality. Most
garden shows have the camera on the actors too much. What I want to see are the
plants, not the dopey hosts. Ahh, I feel better already.

RB,
There are always things that some of us can't grow. I see a lot of
pines and other plants needing an acid environment being planted on
these shows and with my alkaline soil, they're impossible to grow.
There are a great many plants that need winter chill, that only happens
here once every 10 years or so. You might not be able to grow all year
long like I can, but you don't normally suffer from the summer heat that
we do and I'm sure if you have the choice, wouldn't want to, anymore
than I would move to a colder climate or to trade my deep rich clay soil
that has few to no rocks for any other :)

Oh Tom, not my Paul James. I really like the guy. Yes, he is goony and goofy,
but I am positive he is NOT a Vila wannabe. (BTW, Bob Vila is now Latin and his
name is pronounced Bob VeeLah. I heard it on some Latin award show.)

Anyway, Paul gives some wonderful beginner/intermediate information and he leans
toward the organic/natural solution, rather than the synthetic/chemical
solution. For that alone I give him credit. He also does it in a very soft way,
not like me...a buffalo in a china shop! But that idiotic Surprise Gardener!
I agree with you. It is the most awful crap I've seen in my life. I am also

Hey, guys. Bob Villa is (was) a contractor. Norm and latter Riley were
craftsmen. I doubt that Norm would be at all happy if he was the one to
have to tell people, "Remember your tight budget? Well, you'd better double
it." Norm just doesn't seem the type. My favorite line was the time that
Bob told a couple that they could save $30,000 if they'd paint their rather
smallish ranch house, themselves. Lord! Just exactly how much DO painters
charge in the Northeast?

I never miss Norm's New Yankee Workshop. Just goes to show you what
experience and $100,000 worth of tools can do. <G> Husband to wife. "Why
yes, Hon. I can build a hutch just like Norm did. First we're going to
have to get a big building in the back yard. Let's see, $75,000 should do
it. And then there are the top-end tools to get. Say a 100,000 dollars for
a working figure. And then, oh, I don't know, say five years to learn how
to use those tools. Yes, Hon, I'll go back to my little compter."

Heck, I watch Martha Stewart, too. I get the biggest kick outta "First you
dig a hole twice the diameter of the root ball." and magically, a four foot
hole appears. Heck, I'd bet that Martha didn't even *supervise* the two
guys that spent an hour and half, digging that hole.

Even Paul James, whom I consider one of the best, ya gotta wonder, just
exactly how much time does he spend in the yard and garden. Seems like it
must be every waking minute.

Again, I sit her in amazement that no one has figured it out. We had Jim
Crockett, and then...nothing. Even Babe Ruth can't be topped, I guess. No
good gardening show, no good gardening magazines, and if Gardening for Dummies

Flower Garden for the rest of my life. Guess I must.

Why does it all seem so simple to us, but so complicated to them?

To be honest, I watch them both, but for different reasons. We do like
really good food which starts with a really good garden. In addition,
my horticulture class does spend a lot of time on crafts and I get good
tips on crafts from both. I've had people ask me how I learned to tie

I have to agree, I think Paul James is outstanding.... Yes, his sense of
humor is a little crazy at times, but if you had his job, wouldn't you be
ecstatic too? A lot of the other shows are just too much "fluff"! And my
other favorite TV gardening personality is Jim Wilson... Very mellow,
knowledgeable....

P.S. I'm always amazed at the fantastic equipment Paul J. has at his
disposal(Troybilt, Honda, etc....).

And that's not all, butt is this really how we judge hose and garter -- er,
I mean 'house and garden' -- shows now?

Infotainment or infotainmeat?

Ah, well.

At least there *are* such shows on TV. There is a market for that. No one
show is going to please everyone, but at least they are out there. And if
they succeed [live long] and prosper, they will be followed by more such
shows. And as the audience becomes more sophisticated, the programs will
have to keep up.

Or at least we can always hope. What we have now is certainly better than
we had it 15 years ago (almost nothing in most markets). A decade from now,
it could be better still...

Right. And before that, none.

Kind of like the sci-buffs arguing about which of the 5 "Star Trek" series
is/was best. Or whether "ST: Deep Space Nine" is better than or not as good
as "Babylon 5." (That Howard Stern radio guy said that "Babylon 5 is the
best new Star Trek", perhaps not [or not not] noticing that is was not ST
at all...).

Those folks should quit arguing and just be glad that there's any sci-fi on
TV right now.

And hope for (and demand) better, later.

Ah,,,,Tom. Because you didn't like it does not make it stupid. MOST

But I agree with your last sentiment. UNfortunately, the marketeers are who

Me too. I happen to like Martha! Sure she is WASPy snob, but so what. She
also has a great sense of humor about it all. Did you see her and Rosie O'D
with Sally Jesse and Norm when they helped build and decorate that Habitat for
Humanity House? That was very funny. Or when Rosie O'D was on her show and
they did decoupage?

Rebecca is very unassuming and sweet. I like her too. She stuffs as much as
she can into every show. I like that.

And hey, my dish detergent bottle is a nice one with a little booze bottle
pouring thing. If I didn't have Martha, how would I have known to do that?
Huh? Huh?

I haven't seen it, as I don't get the SciFi network. Heck, the local

Ah, but Victoria, if I can't join in making a little fun of myself, what
good is it to even be on the group?

Gandy:

You did find something to misconstue, so you must be happy...

No, the overalls are immaculate. Shameless behavior for a gardener.

The least she could do is get some mud on them.

On the *overalls*, Gandy...

I believe they have that info on their website. It may be www.furnituretogo.com

Or go to The Learning Channel website and search around. I think they are still
on.

Bill,
Haven't you ever been bemused by a show that's soooo stupid that you
can't use the channel changer? Personally, I think most garden shows do
try to be informative, educational, inspiring and occasionally funny,
the problem is that most of the general public can't tell which ones are
meant to be and which ones aren't.
I totally agree with Tom (as most of us do) about his analysis of both
shows and I also support his right to say whatever he wants about them.

Oh man. Do I agree. The first time I saw it they did a garden in the
southern US (Arizona?). They did a garden in full sun and planted a bed
of...are you ready?.... Primulas. They didn't specify what they were
but I recognized them. They were obviously more concerned with colour
for the camera than something that would actually survive where they put
it.

I also can't stand Paul James, who spends more time doing the "Big dumb
guy" comic routine than dispensing advice. Leave the yuck yucks to Tim
Allen, Paul.

The biggest problem with these shows seems to be all the phoney patter
in between segments. It is so obviously scripted and the hosts are such
bad actors.

We have an excellent regional show here in the East called "The Maritime
Gardener" that is simple, straightforward and deals 100% with
gardening.
Regional shows also deal with plants that will actually grow in your
garden. Anybody else have a favorite regional gardening show?

No rocks??? I just spent the afternoon digging a 3 x 2 ft flagstone out
of my new flowerbed. It has a much bigger brother down there that I
gave up on. I thought gardening would be so much easier here than in
Manitoba. WRONG!! Just different problems...or should I say
challenges? ;-)

Wonder what became of mud wrestling...? Never did quite get that. Maybe
could get resurrected with a gardening twist...Martha and Susie (with them
immaculate boobs) going at it in the zinnia bed after a hard rain...

Ha ha ha ha ha! I agree totally! But I just don't watch the stuff. A local PBS
station carries a new? program called "Perennial Gardener" with some nice woman
from Iowa named something Strohbean or something like that. I've caught a couple
episodes and REALLY like it.

I also like "Grow It!" and can often be heard whistling the theme song while I'm
out pottering around in my garden.

I'm pretty well addicted to gardening shows on HGTV. My favourite is,
but only for Canadian viewers, The Canadian Gardener with David Tarrant.
The absolute worst, imho, is "Surprise Gardener" with Susie Cuelho as
host. I have not learned one tiny little thing. The scenarios they
present look like artificial setups. Can't believe anyone would let
their yard or garden go to such mayhem as when they first start out in
the shows. Any opinions?

I begged my cable provider for almost two years to add HGTV because the
show listings in the TV Guide sounded so good...when we finally got HGTV
this past January, it wasn't as good as I had hoped. I started watching
most of the shows, then quickly eliminated the ones I thought were
pretty lame and now I am down to just a couple of shows and parts of
shows. "Garden Architecture" is a perfect example...I always enjoy the
first host. He visits some wonderful gardens and I like his interviews.
I cannot stand the second guy-what a snot- and his design ideas are
mostly horrible (in my humble opinion) And the woman host has the most
tacky ideas for projects! I haven't seen one I would even consider
putting in my gardens! So, I just watch the first segment of that show.
I like "Grow It" . I have learned some useful stuff and I would not mind
having that host as a neighbor. The best shows are the specials that
take you to visit gardens all over the world. My son actually visited
the Imperial Gardens in China. I got the tour on HGTV. I also liked
seeing coverage of the Chelsea Garden Show and other gardening
competitions. Tours of old estates are always of interest to me. My
FAVORITE show on HGTV... "The Company of Animals" ! Always a beautifully
produced show.

Then there are the shows where they take a perfectly comfortable room and
destroy it in the name of "decorating!"

Hi Jutta:
I also enjoy David Tarrant's show and have learned a
lot from it. The snippets from gardeners in other parts
of Canada are great. If you miss an episode people can
read all about it on the show's web site. I enjoy Ken
Beattie's call in show on WTN.
