Has anyone tried it? Is it possible to encourage what would normally
make one big head to grow lots of smaller ones? To deadhead and keep
getting flowers? And does anyone know how to tell what kind of sunflower
you've got when they're still small? I've got tons--courtesy of the
birds! (By the way, that stuff about planting them in warm weather is
nonsense--these sprouted well before our last frost.) Last year I let
two volunteers live so I could see what they were. One produced a stocky
plant and single large flower head on a relatively short (2-3foot)
plant. The other was of a similar height but produced a much smaller
flower. I'm assuming that I've got something similar this year. Any
advice appreciated!
