My Hollyhocks came up this year and they're very beautiful. I know a lot,
if not most, of you are going to tell me that they're going to die this
year and never come back. The package said perennial and that they're
bi-ennial only in that they don't bloom the first season. My question is
this; Assuming they're going to come back next year (which I really hope
they do) what's the best way to care for them now? Should I cut down the
entire stalk when they're done blooming or leave them alone? What's the
best way to ensure that they will come back?

Thanks,
Beth

My Hollyhocks come back every year. They reseed themselves. I do very
little to them. I uproot them after the seeds have dried, save the seed
and share or reseed. (Although, some of the plants that are more
protected, never really die, and come back to life in the Spring. These
plants do not want to come out easy if I pull them.) You can save the seed
and reseed in the Spring, or leave the plants alone till the new plants
return.
