Hi! Last summer we bought 10 acres that is about 2/3 meadow and 1/3
trees. A lot of the trees are either Black Locust or Honey Locusts that
are quite large. The part of the land that is meadow has several small
saplings growing on them...mostly Black Locusts.

We want to fill the meadowed part of the land with trees. At the same
time the Locusts seem to sprouting up everywhere. It seems folly to cut
down the Locusts and then plant other trees; but at the same time, I'm
not sure I or my 3 dogs would like 10 acres of Locust thorns everywhere
(we've both already stepped up on several). But the trees are pretty in
a way, and I've read they are beneficial to wildlife and the soil.

My question is: should I thin these out (how?!), cut them down
altogether, or just forget about them and let Nature do it's own thing
planting my own trees closer to the house?

THANKS!!!

Plant the trees you want where you want them. I presume they will be oak,
maple, and other long-lived desirable trees. As they mature, they will shade
out the locusts, which will gradually retreat.
