In the past, some of the members of this news group have wondered about
the lastest releases to come out of the Ag Canada rose breeding program.
Here are some very brief descriptions that I received some time ago from
Neville P. Arnold as a supplement to the booklet "Winter-hardy roses from
Agriculture Canada." Some of these cultivars are already being sold,
others should come on the market in a year or so (Hardy Roses for the
North already lists them in its catalog):

'Quadra'--Quadra is a winter-hardy climbing rose with a spreading type of
growth habit and dark red flowers. The plant flowers freely and
recurrently and is resistant to powdery mildew and blackspot.

'George Vancouver'--George Vancouver is a winter hardy shrub rose with an
upright type growth habit and medium red flowers. The plant flowers
freely and recurrently ans is resistant to powdery mildew and blackspot.

'Royal Edward'--Royal Edward is a winter hardy semi-dwarf shrub rose with
a spreading type growth habit and medium pink flowers. The plant flowers
freely and recurrently and is resistant to powdery mildew and blackspot.

'Lambert Closse' (pronounced Lahm-bear Closs)--Lambert Closse is a winter
hardy shrub rose with an upright bush type growth habit and medium pink
flowers. The plant flowers freely and recurrently and is resistant to
powdery mildew and tolerant to blackspot.

Whether or not I am correct, I can guess where George Vancouver explored.
Where did Lambert Closse explore?

If I remember correctly from grade school (a long time ago!), Lambert
Closse was not an explorer but the first farmer near Quebec City in the
Colony of "Nouvelle France" in the 1600s. If someone knows about any
exploring done by him, please correct me!
