Gee; "please do not attempt to post again" seems to be a stock answer to
that guy.

Well, I think this is a nice end of episode for you after the agrevation and
frustration for you. Moreover it caused some some of "them " to become curious
of RGR.

Isn't it about time to update the RGR FAQ with:
-some nice free speech lines;
-descriptions how differently RGR posters might react;
-and
-not to forget
-the general off topic character of this c(h)at (horse?) room?

***One wonders where the forum folks' minds are. If the people there
want to be civil to each other, they don't need rules forcing them to be
that way; if they don't want to be civil, then the rules just encourage
insincerity and, via that, a general encouragement of and tolerance of
sham. Here on rgr, it's like a large dinner-party after a rose society
event. Lots of people are talking roses, some are chatting and
gossiping with rose friends about other things, sometimes unruly
gate-crashers force their way, sometimes tempers flare; but, in all
cases, a general freedom reigns, allowing adults to conduct themselves
as they see fit. On the forums, it's like Sharing Day at grade school,
with squinty-eyed Teacher roaming up and down the aisles to make sure
the children don't misbehave--according to the Teacher's strict opinions
concerning "misbehavior."

***But some of those forum children still manage to misbehave, rendering
null the supposed value of the "moderation," leaving the impression that
those personally favored by the moderator can do whatever they want
throwing spit-wads etc., while others must as it were sit at their desks
with their hands folded. My experiences there have been mostly negative
(and the interface is frustrating). I'll take freedom, please.

***I'm sure that I represent the opinion of many when I say: Forum folk
who visit rgr, Welcome! Post your questions and observations freely,
expressed as you see fit. Include, as you see fit, references to
commercial sources or the inanity of other posters, using sarcasm,
patronization, litotes, hyperbole, metaphor, or indeed any other tool of
expression or attitude which serves your meaning. You're free to
choose; just remember that other posters may have something to say about
what you have to say and how you say it! Sometimes it can be choppy
waters here, because many of us are spirited people with strong
opinions. But in the clash of opposing viewpoints, and in the heat of
spirited people allowed to express themselves spiritedly, often some new
understanding or perspective comes out, a new understanding or
perspective which would have remained hidden under the wet blanket of
forum rules. If you see a lot of off-topic chit-chat here, remember
that it's just a means of blowing off steam, or of maintaining the
esprit de corps here which, in the final analysis, helps everyone.
Welcome to the dinner-party; um, to get the wine, you have to let out a

Maybe some of the forum folks' minds are where mine was - in complete
unawareness of rgr. All I knew how to access was through the netscape
program. If Tom hadn't told me, I still would'nt know. I have a
suggestion, an idea that has been floating through for a week - those
that haven't been banned could start posting there with references to
rgr . Taking away Spike's advertiser's audience could be a way of
letting him know where he is at with his attitude.

I wonder if those of us who haven't been thrown off should treat being throw
off as a badge of honor? Individually, we could post a message with the
subject "Real Rosarians Not Wanted Here" or similiar and mention that the
Director of the SJHRG and the editor of a major ARS magazine have been thrown
off and that "I" am an expert rosarian and want the same recognition!

That should keep Spike busy. ...and confused!

Just posted this to Gardenweb:

Are Real Rosarians Welcome?

Posted by Mel Hulse - 9 (melh...@netcom.com) on Sat, Oct 2, 99 at 20:25

I understand that the Director of the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden was
recently thrown off this forum for answering a question as to whether he had a
certain variety for sale. I further understand that a leading Sourthern
California rosarian and editor of an American Rose Society periodical was
thrown off this forum for questioning the moderation policy.

I feel left out.

I am maintenance director for the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden. I don't sell
roses and I don't edit rose magazines, but I think rose forums should be open
as long as the subject is roses. Fortunately, the newsgroup: rec.gardens.roses
is such. If you feel constrained by the moderation policy here, come see us!

At this writing, Mel's post is still there as are 5 follow-ups, only one

I had thought of doing this myself but concluded that it is too much like

There is a sorta community there and I suspect that any such posts would be
greated poorly by those who feel themselves a part of it. I do note that Spike
does not control E-Mail so I plan to continue to respond to inquiries on that
Forum which interest me. I will of course take the opportunity to suggest to
those really interested in roses (including the large number of people that I
talk with regularly) that posting at that site is a dumb thing. As I have said,
what goes around, comes around - Spike Hernandez or whatever person hides
behind that name is a jerk and has no business moderating a forum dedicated to
roses. The GardenWeb itself has no business in being in business...

~~~oOo~~~ Wellllll, once upon a time, in a magical kingdom somewhere In Virtual
Reality there lived a motley crew of folks who had One Thing In Common. They were
rose nutz. That was just about the only thing they had in common with each other,
except that some of them were befuddled befublicans and a few, special wonderful
people, were flemocrats. But that's another story and we shouldn't go there this
morning. Sometimes, the people in the magical kingdom would rant and rave at one
another and stomp around in a huff. Sometimes, they were all smoochey-woochey and
disgusting. There was a lot of ebb and flow in the Emotional Department.
~~~oOo~~~ One day, a stranger appeared in the magical kingdom. The annals of history
are foggy now, and becoming foggier and foggier with time, but a war ensued between
the stranger and the inhabitants of the magical kingdom and one thing lead to
another and Defenders of the Stranger (aka people who had never been to the magical
kingdom before and are also known as trolls) joined the fray. There was a lot of
gnashing of teeth, raising of fists, yelling, screaming, hollering, etc., etc. But
when the smoke had finally cleared, the people of the magical kingdom and the
stranger had become As One. Peace and Love Reigned in the land. The trolls went
away, although one or two of them occasionally pop in just to say hello.

~~~oOo~~~ The stranger, who was drawn into the bosom of the magical kingdom, grew to
love roses, and rose people, very, very much and went on to grow millions and
millions of roses. Led by her spiritual rose guide, Big Momma, the stranger, who was
in truth a stranger no more, eventually became the President of the American Rose
Society. A large urban rose garden was named in her honor. And all the people from
the magical kingdom would meet there every spring for mint julep and some of Janie
Hillman's cookies.
~~~oOo~~~ The End.

Julie, it is rather complicated, and there are many interpretations of the so-called
troll wars. I am recognized as the person who sicced a bunch of trolls on rgr
because of what I, a newbie at the time, felt was rotten treatment from some rgr
regulars. Some of us have worked it out and made our peace, others have not. It is
my opinion that many of us behaved badly, including me, and I have apologized for my
part in the mess, as have some of the rgr oldtimers. If you really want to see the
carnage, go to Dejanews and enter something like "troll," or perhaps, "Celeste."

Thanks Celeste, for the clear an unbiased statement of what happened. As most
here know, I'm a "live and let liver." You and yours appeared at the time to
be just trying to trash a useful and fun group. For that reason, I got as
angry as I get. As an old netizen, I would have thought you might have lurked
a while to get a feel for the group before assuming we were out to get you.

Anyway, I glad things have been resolved as they have. I felt they would in
time. The time was shorter than I thought it would be. So on with the show!

The experience Tom, Dave and you have had with Spike will certainly cure anyone
who ever toyed with the idea of rgr being moderated. I don't generally care for
extremes, but if I had to choose between the anarchy that could come from free
speech or the autocracy of a dictator, the choice is very simple for me. I
might not always like what I read or hear, and I might complain, but I'd still
rather that we all have the right do say what we want, and if we leave or stay
or lurk or whatever, the moderation comes from within, not from some little
dictator.

Definitely the finest classic tale of despair and redemption, followed

It brings a virtual welling of the eyes simply to follow the ebb and
flow of the Emotional Department alone, let alone the mysterious
"other story" of the special wonderful flemocrats!

I raise my mint julep in silent salute and tribute to the memory of

You are correct. Voting was a weightier matter then. Of course, we used
the stones
over and over again to make voting easier for the aged. And the losers
accepted
defeat by being pelted with the ballots. It cut down on the vanity

****** Now, now that isn't why candidates aren't getting mentioned
here. Politics has always produced wild flaming threads when we get
started. But I can't resist a comment on the above. Since when have
Americans demanded that their presidential candidates be *interesting*
people? Since TV became such a major factor in how we assess them?
Unless a candidate can produce groovy soundbites regularly and has a
"look" (dignified but somehow cool) that appeals to the citizenry, we
write him off as ennui-inducing. Personally I'd rather have a guy as
president who was something of a plodder than a sexy, camera-conscious,
rhetorician. Do we really need another party boy in the White House?
I guess it's too bad that people have become so habituated to flash,
smoke and mirrors that they can't sit still and listen carefully when a
serious candidate outlines a serious platform. More's the pity.
Actually, when I think about it, the only "interesting" people who've
occupied the White House in many years were Dems -- JFK, and FDR.
IMHO!
The Befubs haven't had an interesting candidate since Teddy Roosevelt.

***** Julie -- this is a pretty tale, but it may not quite jibe with
some folks' experiences vis-a-vis the trolls. I think that you will
not actually have your question (quoted above) answered here in r.g.r.
And there are very good reasons for that. If you want to get a bit
more perspective on a particularly traumatic piece of our history you
might email a few people and ask for their viewpoint.

Hey, I resemble that remark! (she delurks) It's because rosarians are
being driven off the forum that the quality of advice has gone downhill.
Being a rank newbie at roses myself, I used to put in there now and
then. And it does seem to attract the sort of beginner that could best
be served by rgc experts. Myself, I've only been banned from gardenweb
twice - once for having links to commercial sites on my homepage, and
once because I publicly told Spike and his minions (yes, he does have
minions!) where to go after his disgraceful treatment of another poor
soul. But check out some of the other forums - they've been turned into
agony aunt columns lately!

You didn't think Nixon was "interesting?"

~~~oOo~~~ If I am your daughter, dear, you had me when you were a baby yourself...
that aside... Oregon is supposed to be a fanTAStic place to grow roses... there was
a special on PBS ages ago about some guys who went to Egypt (I think) to undercover
the truth behind just how those guys way back when made those humongous stone
obelisks... they determined that a bunch (as in hundreds of thousands, or
thereabouts) of people (I don't think they considered them people at that time...)
hit a big stone with a bunch of little stones over and over and over again each and
every day... do you think you might be Shirley Maclaine-ing (I spelled that wrong)
it, and perhaps in an earlier life, your daughter has dim memories of pounding
stones with you? Close your eyes and meditate on this for a couple seconds, k?
Boy, it seems like there must be a happy medium somewhere...between the twit Spike,
with his superego, and the troll-times. A light-handed moderator? Or is there such
a thing, as a moderator without an ego? Probably not. I'm sure I'd make a poor
one. Too opinionated
I believe I gave Julie a straightforward answer to her question. Are you
having a bit of trouble "letting go?" Traumatic? Here is hoping you
don't experience anything like real trauma in your life, then.
Yep, me too. You know, the responses of many folks to this extraordinary
discussion, in e-mail and here, make me feel like it has been worth the
effort to stay here. Pretty weird, pretty cool. I'm not wrong about
everybody, only most people, right? :-)
Over here we had that all along in those days you were reigned by foreign
kings. We had our Republic of the Seven United Provinces (nothing bigger
than 7 of your avarage counties) and our Stad houders (in a way by
inheritance) were posing as presidents...Now we have a queen...keep dreaming
about your presidents...:-)))))
Keep in mind that the Gardenweb Forum is filled with people who seem to
be quite happy (or quite ignorant) of Spike's censorship. By definition,
a "moderator" will only please about half the people who would
potentially speak up. The other 50% will accuse him of being too
heavyhanded, or too forgiving. The only rule of participation that is
immune from missinterpretation is: Anything goes.
