I have heard of diatemacious (sp?) earth being used to control
slugs, as an organic control - it is the stuff mined from the
bottom of the ocean and because the particles are supposedly
sharp, they cut the slugs if as the cross the trail.

Is this the same stuff I'm using in my pool filter? Or do I
have to get some other kind of DE?

Diatomaceous earth comes in different qualities. The pool filter DE is one
thing and then there is the DE used for food storage (used in grains). Then
there is the garden grade DE used for crawling insects. From what I have
read (and there are differing opinions) the differences are in the size of
the diatoms (skeletal remains - which is what DE is) and also the purity of
the DE (obviousely don't use pool grade for grain storage).

For slugs, I would use 'sharp sand' and save the DE for crawling insects.

Just my opinion.

I understand that it is not the same, because the pool stuff has had
something else done to it, and is not as sharp as the stuff for gardens,
and for some reason I do not know now, it is not as safe anymore. That
could be all wet.

Inhaling the dust is supposed to be very bad for the lungs.

Yes, my bag of pool DE does have a cancer warning on it for
inhalation, which is why I was wondering if it is the same stuff
that gardeners talk about.

My DE pool powder is super fine, like baby powder or baking
flour, and I imagine the kind used for insects must be sharper.

The stuff for gardens is super soft to our fingers and eyes, too, but
under a microscope you would be able to see the sharp edges.
