I have a problem with the above Cactus in that I've had it for about
13 months and it has recently started to collapse in on one side and
has gone very soft and yellowish in Colour almost as if it's rotting.
This exact same thing has happend to me before with another Cactus of
the same type which I thought was due to over watering so this time
around I've been very careful not to over water and therefore know
that this isn't the cause of the problem.

Is there anything that I can do, or should have done to prevent this
happening again?

Your help is appreciated

Tony, it is dead. You have still probably overwatered it. Well......
maybe not overwatered as much as watered it at the wrong time or improperly.
All cacti must be drenched, and then rewatered when the soil is bone dry.
NEVER water just a little bit on a regular schedule. Always drench and dry.
Echinocacti are used to a dry winter rest period. Mine hasn't been
watered since well before Christmas and it's doing fine. They are only cold
hardy when dry and down to about 28*F.
The only other possible explanation is that an insect has begun at the
root tip and eaten its way up into the body of the plant. I've seen this
happen with a rare plant of mine. I had to do major surgery to save it.
Yours is definitely beyond hope. Time to hit the shops for another!
I sure hate to be the bringer of bad news........ ;-(

Your cactus is dead, or nearly so. If you examine it, you will most
likely find that the roots have died or rotted away. Most cacti
require a period of dry, or nearly dry dormancy. Year round watering
is a bad idea for nearly all cacti.

During their dormant times most cacti should be watered only if they
appear to be dehydrating.

Right. Shriveling is a definite cry for water.
The WORST thing you can do to a cactus is to give it a LITTLE water EVERY
week! Rot is sure to follow.
Drench and dry is the key.
