There is a small (3') magnolia growing in the woods behind my house which I
would like to transplant to a large open sunny spot in my yard. When is the
best time of year to transplant? Are there any special considerations to
take into account when transplanting magnolias?

Thanks in advance,

If it helps, Broadwells nursery told me they only sell Magnolias in
December since that is the only month they are dormant. So if I
were you, I'd do it in December.

Thanks, that makes sense.

The fall (or now) is the best time to transplant trees and shrubs in this
area. It allows the roots of the tree to get down deep before the heat of
next summer. Dig up the magnolia by digging at least double the size of the
diameter of the tree's leaves. The roots extend out double the size of the
diameter of the tree canopy. Make sure to dig the hole in your yard big
enough to accommodate the root ball of the tree. After putting the tree in
the hole, water the hole till soaked and make sure there are no air pockets.
Fill in with soil and step on it to pack it around the roots. I always toss
a handful of 10-10-10 fertilizer around the bottom of the tree without
letting it touch the tree or its roots. Keep watering the tree at least
once a week very deeply to get the roots going down deep in the soil. When
the weather gets very cool (40's), you can water every other week to make
sure it's getting enough water. Good Luck.

Penny, I appreciate the detailed instructions. Hopefully that tree will get
off to a good start thanks to your advice.
