I've just played a beta version of Sonic 2. The game was quite far from
completion and missing a lot of levels but there was a big surprise. The
2 player split-screen mode utilizes an interlaced, higher resolution graphics
mode I've never seen before on the Genesis. I've heard that the Genesis
is capable of displaying at a higher resolution than 320X220(?), but
this is the first time I've seen it.

The graphics sort of flicker so I guess it's interlaced, and the resolution
seems to be double of normal. It might be around 640X400. And it looks pretty
fantastic, despite the flickering.

I wonder it there is anyway to fix the flickering problem. If so, then the
graphics of the Genesis can be dramatically improved. I also hope that more
games in the future will use this higher resolution.

Now, if only they can get over that limited color palette....

Yep! You are right in one thing. The Genesis CAN interlace, but that
doubles ONLY the vertical resolution (ie: 320 X 400). It isn't the
first game with interlace, try Y's 3 for a flickering surprise!!!
Even Valis 3 has an option (a trick) to put it on interlace. But none
of these games took advantage of that. I am glad Sega is finally using
that mode...but i'm thinking there's gonna be a slowdowns,because of
the doubling of the rasters lines...anyway it's a very interesting
application...

Tell me more about the game - does this mode only happen in
the 2-pl mode? And, what's the way they cut off part of the
screen for each player -- or is that the point, that they
don't cut off part of the screen, they just do a

OO or O
O

type thing where one full screen is on top of another, or on
the side of the other?...

Is the game worth buying -- yes, it's an early copy, but does
it look like it's a major upgrade to the original, or what?
Also - how many levels, etc, are in the final version -- and
how's the music?..

Thanks!

The split screen is only in 2 player mode. You have an upper screen and lower
screen, with Sonic in the upper one and Tails in the lower one. Each seperate
screen is not cut off in any way. However, since the screen is cut in 2 the
normal dimensions are kind of screwed up with the horizontal length being too
long, everything in the split screens end up looking "flattened." Looks kind of
weird, but I guess they had to do it to compensate for the change in screen
dimensions.

This is kind of hard to answer. So far the only "major upgrade" I've seen
is the split screen interlaced mode. Otherwise the game plays pretty much
the same. The graphics in the normal mode actually don't look as good to me
as Sonic 1! I think the choice of colors was not as good and everything looks
too "dark" to me. The music also didn't sound as catchy as the original Sonic.
I can't remember exactly but I think there are around 20 levels. However since
this is not the final version, all I said above could be changed and improved.

From the September issues of Megadrive Fan and Beep! Megadrive:

Landstalker : 16 mega, late September release
This game seems to play very much like the Zelda series, except the action
takes place in a diagonal overhead perspective, like Rings of Power. They
call it the "Diamond Shaped Dimension System." (WOW)

Final Fight Mega-CD: scheduled for December release

A lot of hype for this game. 2 player simultaneous, contains all the levels
from the arcade version, and uses parallel processing of the Megadrive and
Mega-CD processors to bring more characters onto the screen at once.

Other noteworthy games: Crying(Bio-Hazard Battle) is going to be a two player
simultaneous shooter, coming out on 10/30. Gauntlet (December) is going to
support 4 players with a special adapter that Tengen is making. Time Gal,
Wolf Team's second laserdisc game(first one was Thunderstorm FX), is coming
out in September. Revenge of Shinobi 2, 8 meg, coming in December. Ninja
Gaiden, 8 meg, October. Golden Axe 3, November. Might and Magic 3 on Mega
CD, no date yet. Games in early planning stages: Shining Force 2, Lunar 2,
and Langrisser (Warsong) 2.

Really? Wow... Have you seen any credits yet for who did the music and graphics?
The original "Team Sonic" were the original designers, with "Dreams Come True"
being the band who designed the music...
Any new power ups?

Thanks a lot for all info thus far received!

Is this info from the 9/92 issues of each mag?
Just curious - I have them both and wondered if there were
some new pics I hadn't seen...

Where do you get your Japanese mags? So far, I haven't
found a place in the US that sells Megadrive Beep for a
reasonable price. Please include phone # and any other
pertinant info...
