Hey all,

Has anyone here got this game ?? If so what's it like ??
Looks pretty cool from the pics and vids I've seen, but how does it
play ?

I loved F1 Challenge on Saturn. It wasn't exactly realistic but it was
great fun IMO. Is SSR a similar type of game ??

thanks
Steve

I like it, much better than the steaming pile called Monaco GP2. But from
all the reviews I've seen I'm in the minority on that viewpoint.

I haven't played F1 Challenge so I can't compare, but your description makes
it sound similar. SSR is "arcadey" even in the "simulation" mode, you can
bump other cars without crashing, etc. The cars grip the road quite well,
but you must slow down for corners, no Sega-Rally-style powersliding (which
would be weird in these cars). About half (I think) of the 18(?) tracks are
oval variations which many of the reviewers seemed to find boring, but I
liked them because you get to go really fast, and the sense of speed in this
game is great. This game is more about racing other cars, as opposed to Sega
Rally 2, which is about racing difficult tracks with not much car
competition. Several of the road courses do have tight turns and such
though, and really narrow sections, where you have only certain areas where
you can pass.

Anal complainers will gripe about the pop-up on some of the tracks, and the
very minor framerate drop occasionally in corners with a lot of cars
onscreen. Monaco has far worse slowdown and framerate drop on the Monaco2
track in the city, affecting the gameplay, yet I've read reviews and posts
claiming it has "zero slowdown", bleah.

For a long good comparison of the two that comes to the opposite conclusion,
see if you can still see Darrius Joiner's post titled "Monaco GP2 vs. Super
Speed Racing my thoughts....." from 4/3/99, or see it on Dejanews. I
disagree with his conclusion but his analysis of both games is pretty
accurate I think, except I think SSR looks better than he does. ^_^

I'd like to add to what he said that playing Monaco GP2 with the wheel is
damn frustrating. Not only does the wheel have to be in port 2, but most all
menu selections, and even the start button to start the game, have to be
done via the controller in port 1...you can't use the buttons with the
wheel. What kind of crap is that?

www.gamefan.com has a pretty good .mpeg of SSR, as does
www.extreme-imports.com .

Thanks for the review Ray :) I think I'll order this game next. It
does sound a bit like F1 Challenge on Saturn, which was very arcadey
and easy to drive, and also great fun. Only had a few tracks but they
were all good ones. I was in the minority liking this game too
actually :) Sounds like SSR is the game for me then :)

Yeah F-1 Challenge was a great game and IMO was the best game to use the arcade
racer wheel with. I did hear that the control of SSR was pretty bad though.

Don't believe everything you hear, heh. ^_^ The control (with the wheel,
anyway) is great. No idea how it controls with the pad.
