Q: It really looks like this PS2 shortage is just a lame marketting
ploy by Sony to do what Nintendo has always done -- create demand for
their system and then spring all these extra units onto the market once
everyone's crazy over it. What are your thoughts?
A: Dave responds: I used to believe that, but based on what I've been
hearing from non-PR sources from inside Sony, the shortage problems are
real. Given that, I think that the way Sony is handling it is pretty
genius. By having 500,000 at launch and 100,000/week afterwards, it's
making it so that there's continuous interest in the system throughout
the holidays.
If Sony were to blow its whole load at launch, people that couldn't get
it would be forced to go elsewhere -- Dreamcast. But, with 100,000
coming every week, consumers will have more hope throughout and might
hold off their purchase of another system. If the system is sold out,
retailers will be able to tell the consumer that more will be in next
week and this will create a weekly "launch" type atmosphere for the
system with every single shipment being a huge media event. Very good
for Sony.
And what's very good to me is knowing that I'll be able to see Jessica
Alba in Dark Angel on Tuesday night. Yummy."
This guy is a complete idiot. He is acting like EVERYONE is still
intersted in the PS2, though he is so close to the industry, I'm sure
that he is aware of the fact that DC sales are up 156%. Not to mention
he is a fat-man (Search IGN for some pictures of him, he is at least
100 pounds overwieght...maybe more), who has a fetish for internet
porn. The only way he can trick people into reading his POS section is
posting questionable material with his letters. He also includes
things about small penis's in some of his responses. PSX.ign went to
hell after Jay Boor left, that guy was a kick. Now this industry idiot
replaced him, and the site has gone to shit. He is reason enough for
me not to buy a PS2 (well, that AND all the wonderful DC games I'll be
playing come Christmas mourn :). Thanks for your time.

His article is assuming that the standard approach of other companies is
to shut down their manufacturing plants between launch day and three months
past. I doubt Sony is shifting the 500,000 that they would have had for
launch day to the weeks afterwards; rather, I believe that their original
plan of releasing as many as possible by October 26, and then as many as
possible immediately afterwards, is unchanged.

I agree that the gratuitous posting of pictures of scantily clad girls
(alot of which are fugly) is kind of out of place on a videogames
site. Jay Boor did rock, all he ever did was post pictures of his head
