PSO: Here's how to keep your Mag's synchro from dropping

I don't know if everyone knows this or not but your Mag's synchro drops
5 points everytime you leave a game. I never really paid attention to
it which is why my synchro was always at zero. I moved it up to 120
since. Anyways, if you remove your mag and put it in storage before you
exit a game, the synchro won't drop. If not, it drops 5 points and
you'll have to waste items boosting it back up another 5 points. If
your synchro is high, then it won't hurt you as much but if your
synchro is low, then you might want to consider trying it.

This brings up a question I've had -- is synchro really all that useful
for Force mags? What about IQ? I've been concentrating on raising
my mag's def & mind for a while, and as a result my synchro is in the
10-15% range, but I really haven't noticed any difference between that
and the (previous) 120%+ synchro I had. I assume it has something to
do with how often and how quickly you can fire off photon blasts; since
I've got other problems if I start taking physical abuse, I've mostly
been using the mag to boost my stats.

Oh, and it seems I'm at a point where the only item that'll raise every
stat (or, alternately, won't lower anything) is Star Atomizers. Do
Stars ever start getting sold in the shop in town? I'm definitely not
there yet -- Sol Atomizers are still a rarity, even.

Well, I'm still not sure... but from what I've been told, supposedly
that stuff affects things like if your Mag automatically casts spells on
you to help you out, what new special attacks it learns, etc. I'd try to
keep it in sync and balanced no matter what kind of player you are.

Thanks-- great tip! On a related note, my MAG is currently at about level
32-- but whenever I feed it stuff, it gains in some attributes, but LOSES
others. Will having a higher sync affect that? I don't want the thing to

>Just wondering if these things are a use to me.

As near as I can tell, synchro makes your Mag take action when you
encounter danger, and IQ makes it take the right action. For example, if
you're surrounded by a bunch of enemies and your HP gets reduced to about
ten points or so, a Mag with high synchro will execute a non-controlled
technique, as opposed to a photon blast. If his IQ is high, then he will
correctly heal you by casting Resta. If his IQ is low, he may end up
casting Jellen, thinking that the correct action is to lower the enemies'
attack strength.

I've noticed that Ranger characters tend to develop their Mags early...
You get level five and level six Rangers who already have Mags with 75
percent synchro which are split in two. Since Rangers can't use
techniques, I imagine that this is an important defensive tool to have
available.

This is all just random guesses, so any evidence for or against them is
surely welcome. Hope this was helpful.

Heh, one I can actually answer.

From what I've seen, you can't actually *lose* levels with a mag. If you
happen to feed it a lot of something that lowers a given attribute,
you'll just go to having 0-5% of the bar filled but stay at the same
level. As a result, if you want to work on a given attribute or two, it
doesn't seem to be too dangerous to find the food that augments that bar
or two, feed it until you're happy with the level, and then move on.

Has anyone actually started keeping a list of what food affects what
attributes in what mag-level ranges? It didn't occur to me to do so until
about thirty seconds ago.

Excellent Info.

I am trying to be very conscientious about developing my mag. But I
gotta tell you, it can be hard to do when your with a fast moving
group of players. I am getting to where I can do it while we are on
the run to the next location, but a lot of times I end up bumping into
walls and such. I'm sure the other players think I am a real klutz.

I have started to notice that the better players are spending time
feeding their mags.

One small clarification, Human Rangers can use techniques (I am one).
Although they probably suck compared to the forces. When I am with
the right group of people and have the luxury to experiment I am going
to start using them (I do currently heal (Resta?) every so once in a
while when I am low on monomates. So maybe I can become a Force in
training, before starting out as an actual low level Force with my
next character.

That is very cool. I always thought that when the mag activated, it was
because its photon charge was maxed, but it happens when the photon charge
is nowhere near max sometimes... The fact that my mag has never done
anything like healing me may have something to do with its 0 IQ....

I started to keep a list, but then realized my mags preferences change
over time. After mag level 35 I started feeding it antiparalysis
which would bump my synch up by 2 with each one. Like you said it
started lowering some of the attribute bars, but not the actual
attribute levels. I started gaining levels quickly because the
antiparalysis bumped my DEX by a lot with each feeding and as soon as
one attribute goes up a level, the mag goes up a level. Then about 10
to 15 levels higher the antiparalysis started lowering my Synch by 1
and raising my intelligence by 1. So I decided a list was pointless.

Also, I am not sure what I did, but within a short period of time my
mags intelligence jumped from about 35 to 120. This was during the
period that my group beat the Cave Worm boss, not sure if that had
anything to do with it. We had a pretty powerful Force with us, but
he can't raise others intelligence can he?

He meant androids. I use an android ranger (the only "cute girl" among the
rangers), and as such I can't use any techniques aside from what my Mag (or
whatever its name is now) casts. I don't necessarily think rangers have an
easier time with mags, though. I know as an android, I don't have any use
whatsoever for TP replenishing items, meaning it gets converted to instant
mag food. Otherwise, I've notice that the "best" items swap -- once
antiparalysis increased every stat by huge margins; now it does nothing and
appears to have been replaced by antidote as my Mag's food of choice.

Two rangers are androids, which probably leads to the confusion. Only one
hunter is an android; none of the forces are for obvious reasons.

D'oh! You're right, human Rangers CAN use techniques. I just haven't
played a human Ranger yet and I assumed that the Technique limitation
applied to the whole class, not just the race. Thanks for clearing that
up.

Incidentally, does anybody know if there's an upper limit to the levels of
techniques that human characters can use? My human Hunter has got some
pretty high level techniques all of a sudden, but I seemed to have topped
out, in that my MST score won't go much higher. I'm hoping that this
plateau is just because of my weird Mag development, but that hope is not
so high. Better work on a Force character next.

I did but gave up. The effect changes depending on your mag's current
form and other factors like past diet and such. I seem to be going in
circles though. most of it's attributes are at 10-15 but dexterity is
almost at 30. Synchro and IQ are both near max. Weirdest thing that
happened was it turned from a Kama into something else and then back
into a Kama.

i have found that the easiest way to increase my mags stats is to work on one attribute

efficient way of raising mags is to carry two at a time and feed the lower lv one items
that would otherwise be left in the dungeon.

Heh, thanks. I originally started off with this line of reasoning... If
Sega is worried enough about kids imitating grafitti artists that they
feel they need to add a disclaimer to Jet Grind Radio, why don't they add
a disclaimer to the beginning of Skies of Arcadia? Will Sega get sued if
some kid out there rigs a boat, hires a crew, and sails around plundering
the ships of the rich to feed the poor? Then I realized that the term
"piracy" would be in the wrong context when applied to a software company,
so I came up with the Samba de Amigo reference instead.

On that note, has anybody seen the disclaimer card that comes attached to
the rear-view mirror in the new Toyota Celica? The gist is that while the
car is capable of speeds up to 120 mph, Toyota doesn't claim any
responsibility for drivers caught violating the speed limit or local
traffic laws. How paranoid is that?

It sounds like a unit to me. If you look at your armor/frame it
should have a "Slot" property. You can equip "units" to the slot if
it is greater than zero. My PsyArmor (or whatever its called) has
(Slot = 1) which means I can only have 1 unit (currently using one
that boosts my HP by 10 - not sure what the Right Arm unit does). I
chatted with a guy who currently had 4 slots on his armor.

Check the store or your inventory and see if there are any armor/frame
with slot greater than zero and equip this if you want (if it is worth
the price).

I was playing a normal level game with my 2nd character a week or so
ago, and I noticed that all the low level characters had incredibly
high ranking mags. I wondered about this, and then it clicked that
they were using high-or-max level mags to twink their new characters.
The mags have no level requirements for use, and give massive stat
boosts (particularly at that level), so it's the equivalent of your
1st level character starting out with 10 or 20th level stats.
Significant boost.

So what do you have to do? I am guessing find an intermediary to hold
your characters high level Mag, start a new character, and then pick
up the mag you had the other guy store for you.

I think I will eventually do this. I will also have him hold some of
my better stuff for me, so the new character can use (of course it
wouldn't be able to use a lot of the stuff because of class and level
issues.

How do you think a RAmar with a level 5 lightning compares with a
Force with the same level 5?

Undoubtedly the Force has better attributes that boost the power. But
if a RAmar focuses on building those same attributes through Mag food
and such, I would guess they can become reasonably powerful. Guess I
will have to start paying more attention to this when teamed with a
similiar level Force.

I am also a RAmar who is a force wannabe. I am really just now
starting to use some of the techniques. My highest is a Fire level 4,
my lightning is currently only a 2. I am mostly using the healing a
support stuff right now.

I am also keeping mine above 100, but being a RAmar, I tend to be on
the perimeter firing into the middle, so I don't get hit nearly as
much as the others, and therefore don't get the photon blast that
often. It is the Hunters or anyone else who likes to fight up close
that tend to get beat up more. Although in the Mines I am getting
pulverized more.

As a RAmar do you tend to fight up close, or more from the perimeter.
I personally seem to be more effective from the perimeter, not having
to move around as much or spend time healing.

Don't worry about that. Just focus on one attribute at a time (specifically

I Agree. That is what I am doing now. If you focus on just one
attribute at a time, your mag levels up fast. If you change mag food
before the attribute bar you are working on fills up, then you are
wasting your time and mesata. My mag is now a level 102 using this
technique. I probably started doing this when my character was about
an 18 and my mag was maybe a 25 or 30. Now my character is a level
27. So the mag can level up pretty quick using this method. And when
I am online I often go a long time between feedings, especially when I
am with a fast moving group, so it would be even higher if I was more
thorough about it.

Most mag foods for my mag usually decrease either the Sync or the IQ.
So I typically work on one attribute (such as DEF) and the once it
levels up I switch to another food to bring my Sync or IQ back up to
their max (120 and 200). I then repeat the cycle, maybe selecting a
different attribute next time. The Moon Atomizers I feed my mag to
bring the Sync back up also raise the MIND attribute, so as a side
benefit my MST is getting pretty high for a RAmar giving me access to
a lot of spells.

I Don't worry about the decrease in the various attribute items (DEF,
DEX, MIND, etc) having their bars decrease, since they never actually
lose a level, the bar just goes back to the start. When you are ready
to focus on that one it will build up quickly again.

So that explains why I die so quickly if I get trapped by some of the
monsters (especially in the Ruins), while other lower level character
(presumably Hunters) can be much more close and personal and live
through it.

I hadn't really thought about this defense level difference, but it
certainly makes sense and is as it should be. I did kinda wander why
my defense attribute numbers were so low in comparison to the other
attributes. And my best defense building mag foods advance the bar
slowly, so I have to feed him a lot to advance it a level. I do equip
a defense enhancing unit on my armor that boosts it by 10, Last time
i checked though my defense number was just under 100 (I am currently
a level 27).

Its been a long time since I have found a better armor than the two
slot armor I currently have equipped (something I found in the store
at about level 17), and I have been looking in the store and field
checking the overall stats against mine. I have found better armor,
but with only one or no slots, and my overall stats would go down.

I do usually cast a defense enhancing technique (forgot the name) if
I am running around in a crowded monster filled room (like the mines
and ruins) which helps some. If I do this in the forest on normal,
most of the monsters can't even inflict any damage.

Exact same situation here. I got both the reverse and telepipe ones

my Synch after some of the other foods have lowered it. It also
builds my mags MIND attribute quickly, which means I am getting higher
and higher level techniques fairly quickly. I still use primarily the
health and support techniques. I would use more if there were more
shortcuts you could customize. I don't like going through the menu in
the midst of a battle.

Loving the Reverse and telepipe techs though, saving me mucho mesata.

Whoops forgot to ask. How can you tell how high a weapon will go? If
you reach the max and try to apply a mono or digrinder is it wasted
and lost? or does it tell you allowing you to use it on a different
weapon instead?

I haven't seen the cannon yet. I am primarily using various rails and
shots. Love the shot in the mines and ruins, especially online when
in a group.

Wow +11. I have been spreading my grinders around amongst various
weapons. I would definitely want to really trust my group to use a
+11. I have started coming across more of these guys who pop in at
the last minute and steal stuff. I am usually with a group that I
fully trust 2 or 3 of the guys, but it is always that 4th one who pops
in at the end. So far I haven't been burned, but I have had several
teammates burned.

You just won't be able to use the grinder. I was able to boost my rare,
special weapon (can't remember the name) handgun to +9 and then I just
couldn't use any more grinders.

Although, if your weapon can only have one more "point" upgraded on it, and
you use a Di- or Trigrinder, then you will "waste" the added points of the
grinder, because it will only add 1.

Actually thats not entirely true. I just did this for a few new characters
i made. I dropped a near maxed Apsaras mag onto a level 1 Force character,
and a ton of disks. I equipped the mag, and his TP is at about 500, and he
has high enough MST to use but a few very high level spells. Forest 1 on
normal difficulty is cake with level 12 foie ;)

As for gear, the only thing you wont be able to use is high level armors, as
they are level dependent, everything else can be used if you have the right
stats on your mag(high dex for a ranger, pow for hunter etc)
