I don't expect that this subject will generate much conversation, so I'll
keep it brief. But if you do try the demo, please post your impressions.
-KKC, who actually went through the searing pain of installing MediaGo to
get the demo.

I may try it, but right now I have Lunar on my 1GB memory stick, and,
well eventually I hope to get a bigger memory stick (the only reason I
have a PSP right now is because I found the device in the dumpster
behind the GameCrazy that closed a few weeks ago, along with some
360s...).

Is it free? On-line play, I mean. Phantasy Star Online really killed
the community and popularity once Sega required subscriptions. At
least, that's how I perceive it, though I'm sure some of the blame lay
in an unchanging, stagnant formula as well. I thought PSU would be the
answer, but so many reviews trashed it, and my time with the demo
wasn't really enjoyable. :/

To play the demo is obviously free online, but I don't know if the full
game will require any sort of separate subscription or not. I'm guessing
that most American players will elect to play multiplayer ad-hoc and not
go on the server, in either case.

I played PSU for about 18 months and I thought it was worth the
subscription. On one hand, the online game was really adjusted in terms of
difficulty and item availability, which made it worthwhile for me. On the
other hand, Capcom set the bar higher with free Monster Hunter online
play, which did almost everything PSO did just as well.
I've been playing the PSP2 demo all week now, and it feels like they got
it right on the fifth try. :) PSU was an administrative mess in that there
was a lot of manual bookkeeping. PS Zero was almost there but it didn't
match up graphically, and the first Portable game was way too easy. PSP2
seems to have the right degree of difficulty, all the cool combat and
management features of PSO, and all of the content of the previous five
episodes. I was sold the minute I read that the old PSO mission areas are
available, since in PSU you could only see them online.
-KKC, getting various body parts handed back to him in Monster Hunter.

The full game is out, I picked it up tonight and yes, online is
completely free to play. There's a Little Wing license code in the box
which, when entered into PSN, gives you access to the online portion
of the game.

Rock. My Amazon pre-order should be here Saturday. Although the fact that
a separate code is required tells me that Sega might be considering
charging customers who buy a used copy.
-KKC, looking into creating a Little Wing vinyl sticker for his car. :)
