"Borrowed" from today's update of WWW.SEGANET.COM
"Sales figures for the week of January 25-31 have finally come in (sorry for
the delay, I expect last week's figures soon) and things are looking up for
the Dreamcast. A total of three games made the top thirty, with Sega Rally 2
coming in first.
That's right, in just three days, Sega Rally 2 became the number one selling
game in all of Japan with a total of 200,564 units sold. Evolution came in at
number 14 with 16,208 sales for a total of 92,574. Finally, Sonic Adventure
hit number 23 with 11,816 sales for a total of 342,027.
The next edition of the Japanese sales charts should be very interesting, it
will bode well for the Dreamcast's momentum to see Sega Rally 2 maintain a top
five slot."
When you consider how many more N64's and Playstations are out there, this
is an amazing feat! I'm sure Final Fantasy 8 will usurp this position with
ease, but still... Dreamcast is definitely gaining momentum in Japan!

Calm down guys... Some DC games might make it into the top ten from now
on a regular basis, but don't forget that FF8 is released in Japan tomorrow.
And this should be enough to make the sales of DC games pale in comparison
for some time I guess.

I think most people are getting tired of PSX's Lackluster graphics
that have been the same for a while now, The most impressive PSX game I have
ever seen Graphically was Tobal 2(Still an awsome game) But I can assure you
that if a japanese kid looked at ff8, And then looked at Evoulution, or Grandia
2(when it comes out) He would more than likely choose the DC game, I really
think FF8 will be the last Hurrah for PSX, And this christmas will be the last
big x-mas for them as well. I'm not trashing PSX's graphics, I'm just saying
it's time to raise the bar, I know myself and alot of others are growing tired
of the same old n 64 and psx games recycled over and over with different
titles, the luster has just worn off.

but but i saw the graphics for RR4, they looked amazing... and for FF8 and GT2 much
better than DC stuff.......oh wait that was all FMV CG ....bugger
Good old Sony... still showing CG cut scenes instead of in game graphics.... always
able to con the un-informed customer.

Thankfully Sega is back on the Scene in a "Big Boy on the Block" role. I've
ALWAYS liked Sega games better. They have a certain charm that is lost to
all but Nintendo 64's Mario and Zelda Titles.

Exactly how long are ppl going to continue to use this line? Is it
wrong to only show CG graphics? Morally probably yes, because you
could make a case for false advertising I suppose. BUT. Do you
honestly think the PSX still continues to sell well because ppl buy it
thinking all of it's graphics are of CG quality?
No, they buy it for gameplay. Now, YOU may not like the games on the
PSX. And that person might not like them.....BUT apparently alot of
ppl accepting that it does't have the greatest graphics still have
decided it's a system they want to own.
So please drop that line. It's lame, tired...and very old.

No one I think is saying that game ads which feature CG graphics as the expense of the
in-game graphics are bad games. Final Fantasy 7 is a good game and would have sold well
enough based on its own merits and its namesake. However, when, in a market such as
America which has ignored RPGs for the most part, a company chooses to air ads which
make the game look like an adventure film, I think that is grossly misleading.

Every Sony product of late which I've seen advertised used in-game footage for its
television ads. Did people become better educated after "being suckered?" Did Sony's
advertising team have a change of heart after Final Fantasy 7 sold a bazillion
Playstations? Do people care more about gameplay now than graphics? Do game pirates wear
patches over their eyes like the real macoy? This and more on r.g.v.sega!

I can't debate that, because while we both know the CG commercials
were misleading. We don't know out of the sales, how many ppl turned
around and returned the title disappointed in the main game graphics.

Thanks for injecting that large shot of pessimism into the thread. I doubt
FF8 will make all the Dreamcast sales magically "go away". Give me a break.

Why not? And did you say the same thing about GT? I will be playing Sega
Rally 2 for a LONG time. Mainly because of the many tracks and the 2 player
capabilities.
Uhhhh, Evolution? Sengoku Turb???

Hey, Marty's been saying that for months. Didn't you know that any FF title
on any system automatically kills any competing system? Geeze. Some
people... ;)

It's not all that amazing. Rally 2 was the only major release that week for
any system. I'm more interested in knowing how good of a job the game did
pushing DC hardware sales. We'll have to wait until this week's Famitsu hits
to find out. If it only sold 200,000 copies, then I'm worried it may not
have pushed as many hardware sales as I had hoped...

FF8 FMV CGI is stunning to say the least .. Care for a 3d0 anyone,

To be honest, I enjoyed Sega Rally 1 more than Gran Tourismo. For whatever
reasons... I guess I didn't feel the same sensation of speed as Sega Rally
has.

Actually, it doesn't. Graphically, it's far superior to GT. Gameplay? I'm
still playing GT a year and a half later - I *know* I won't be doing that
with SR2. Gameplay does matter, if not, then why are people still playing
2D capcom fighters?

Well, much as I hate to say it, he's right, to an extent. Sales of Final
Fantasy 8 will probably be more than the other top 10 games combined! What is
it 1.8 million pre-ordered I think I heard? Maybe, maybe not. But, if you
think Final Fantasy is big here. Over there... Sheesh. If a Final Fantasy
game comes out for Dreamcast...

That kind of figure will never be released so no-one can really know, all you can do is base
it on the people who actually bought the games and see what they think.
As a consumer i know a lot of psx fans who were dissapointed that what they got was not what
they saw (mainly racing games of late).
I've never said that CG ads indicate a bad game, but you have to agree that the use of CG ads
are mis-leading AND greatly increase the chance that the average consumer will buy that
product.
Much like the Spice Girls, they look talented but they simply aren't.....

It's a gross mis-conception that pirates wear patches over their eyes, doing so would impair
their judgement while battling with cut-lasses/firing cannons and other general pirate
activities... including trying to pee in a bucket.

I'll grant you that. I wouldn't try to debate that part. But if FF8 made
it to Number 1, their are still 9 other games that will show up. What if 7
of them were Dreamcast? There's a big difference between the millions of
PSX's out there and the probably 700,000+ DC's.
My point was no matter how many FF8's sell, Dreamcast sales won't magically
die.
700,000 Dreamcasts? Wow. I haven't heard that before, but its great if its
true. Hopefully Sega Rally 2 can stick around in at least the top 4. I'm
quite certain that Marvel vs. Capcom will be a system seller though. Of
course, it would help if Marvel vs. Street Fighter wasn't still on the hot
list... Anyway, in the US, this will be the first "VS" title that has been
arcade perfect. That alone should do wonders for the system!
