I picked up a Genesis recently (my first, awww), and I've been remembering how
it was always considered the "sports" system.

I'm wondering exactly what made it such a sports game system. I'd guess it was
the games, but I never really heard what games made it better than sports
games on other systems at the time.

I hope Tony La Russa Baseball is one of these games you're talking about,
since that's the only baseball game I picked up so far. :)

NFL 94, best 16-bit football game ever made, and exclusive to the
Genesis since it was made by Sega. The Madden series is good, too.
I'd recommend either the original Madden, which changed console
football games forever, or Madden 96, which was pretty much the best
one of the series.

The NBA Live series (including Coach K) are the best hoops games for
16-bit. Other than the very first one on SNES, the Genesis versions
were always better.

EA's NHL series is the best on 16-bit, also. Rugby 95 is the champ by
default, since it was the only game in town, but it's still good even
though it's more of an arcade game than anything. EA and Sega both
made good baseball games, though I'd lean towards Sega's World Series
Baseball.

Want alternate/wacky/futuristic sports? Cyberball, Pigskin, Mutant
League Football, Speedball 2, and Super Baseball 2020 are all
recommended.

Wow, great response! Yes, I remember playing some of the earlier Genesis EA
NHL games, which were incredible. I know they took the shootouts out of the
later SNES versions, but did they stay in the Genesis ones?

Thanks for pointing me of Speedball 2. I played that on a friend's PC many
years ago, and really enjoyed it. Didn't know it made it to the Genesis.
