'ello all,

Over the next few weeks, I was thinking of bringing a few DC/Saturn
games up to work with me, to pop in the PC and see what extra stuff(if
any) they had on the discs. The thing is, I remember someone talking
about some Saturn game that had a virus on it(I think it was one of
these Altier Ellie games, maybe?). As I could just do this at home, on
the Mac(where it's super-safe), I just don't have time nowadays(and I'm
not doing *anything* at work). Does anyone happen to know if any other
Saturn or DC games contain any viruses?

Thanks in advance,

Bel

No such thing as far as I know. MAYBE if you DLed teh ISO images of the
games, someone could have hid a virus on the downloaded ISO, but if you're
using official discs, I doubt it's a worry at all.

It was the Japanese Dreamcast Atelier Marie game which had a virus, and
it was spread by the screensaver that was included as an extra. There
was a fair amount of news about it; it was being called the "first
console virus". Now whether that's true, or if it's similar to "Madden
2003 is the first online football game", I don't really know. But I
think NCS was saying that was the first virus they'd heard of on a
console game, and I haven't seen a similar uproar since then. Hardly
solid proof, I know.

I've been thinking about making a FAQ of what DC games have extras.
Interested in keeping track of what games you're checking, region of
origin, whether or not there are any extra music tracks, and whether or
not there are any PC extras?

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of. Well, I guess I'll be safe(just
in case) and try them on the Mac...maybe try a few up here too on the PC
at work.

Check out the Old School Sega Section on my page, I just added my DC
games to the "Not-so-old-school-Sega Section" at the bottom. That, along
with the Saturn games are what I'll be checking. I'm going to put it in
a Word doc, then add it to my little, short reviews when I get around to
it. If you want a copy, or me to post what I've found, just let me know.

BTW, so far, and I've just brought demo discs to work today, this is
what I've found:

Dreamcast Generator, Vol 2 - Pop it in and run the Swirl.exe to install
the shockwave version of Swirl on the PC. It's ok, but it doesn't ever
randomize the boards...and Swirly Snake isn't there!!!

ODCM Sampler Vol 5-11 - All have this Swirl.exe on them as well.

ODCM Sampler Vol 1 - This fucking thing crashed non-stop on Windows 2000
here at the Library, and there's no Mac version of the app...but you
can just open the "MPEG MOVIES" folder to watch all the preview movies.

Christmas Nights - Has an "extras" folder in it, with two bitmap pics.
I've posted the Clair pic on my House of Renders, page 6 if you do not
have Christmas Nights, or don't want to pop it in the Mac/PC.

Yeah, they're all originals, it was that DC version of Altier Ellie that
Ted was talking about that had it. That's the only I've ever heard about
so I guess it'll be ok. I'd hate to give the entire company a virus
doing something I'm not even supposed to be doing...;)

Panzer Dragoon Playable Demo - This thing is 155 megs! Is the full game
on here? I thought I remembered hearing, a long while back, that with
the GameShark or something it was found?

I was actually hoping for the following format (actually, just the info
that fills in each field):

Game Region Audio Extra Content
----------------------------------------------------------------
18 Wheeler US Audio1 No
Alone in the US Audio1 No
Dark: The New Nightmare
(Discs1 and 2)
Atari AnniversaryUS Audio1 No
Bangai-O US Audio2 No
Blue Stinger US Audio3 Yes; 18 bitmaps, many
of them swimsuits
Audio codes
Audio1: 7 seconds, female, resonant
Audio2: 1 minute 19 seconds, multilingual
Audio3: 14 seconds, silent

The thing is, you only have abou 2 dozen games I don't (potentially more
depending on the country of origin of each of your games); it would make
more sense for me to type up my list before I ask others for their
input.
So, i'll get off my ass now and work on this tonight; maybe by tomorrow
I can more effectively ask for your input on those 2 dozen games, and
everyone else's input on the several hundred other games.

Yeah, I can dig it. I'll probably only have it listed if there's
anything on the disc. If there's anything I have though, that you can't
get just let me know and I can give you the info in the format you'd like.

BTW, on the Blue Stinger disc, are those swimsuit shots rendered? If so,
I may have to pick up a copy on the way home tonight, as A) I can add
them to the House of Renders and B) I've always wanted to try the game
out anyway.

Solid, they have it at GameStop for, like, $5 nowadays, I'll pick it up.

Shows what you know doesn't it? Why spout off nonsense when you have no
actual knowledge?

The Japanese Dreamcast game Atelier Marie & Elie contains a virus in a
Windows screensaver that's on the disc. This was widely reported in the
Japanese press and I believe by NCS.

Because, you ignorant fucking wanker, HE DIDNT REALISE HE WAS WRONG. Plus
he said 'No such thing as far as I know', and didnt make it out to be a
solid fact.

Oh, you BELIEVE it was reported by NCS? You mean, just like Max Lords
'believed' he was right? And yet you have to act like a tosser towards him?

Even more true.

He was wrong. But unlike some people around here he included an AFAIK
disclaimer, and would probably be happy to stand corrected? Save the
superiority complex for something more worthy as a a New Year platitude?

But what kind of virus was it? If it was a M$ macro virus, it could
attack a Mac as well I believe.

The big question is why doesn't your work PC or mail server have AV softs?
The odds of getting a computer virus via email far outweighs the odds of
getting one from a console game.

I reckon that you have got more chance of Doane going on that Quake LAN
session, than of Raymond acting without being an arsehole.

It's in a screensaver. It's the W32/kriz virus, which infects Windows
95/98 and NT. So, no, unless he's viewing it through a Windows emulator,
he's safe on his Mac.

I think he doesn't want to run any risk of infecting his workplace
computers while doing something not work related (even if they allow
it).

Apparently it was some sort of virus that went through the
screensaver(?). I don't really know too much about it, I just remembered
hearing about it at one point.

If it was a M$ macro virus, it could
> attack a Mac as well I believe.

Yeah, that's true, unless you turn off that option in the MS apps on
Mac. I usually do, but then again, I don't deal with anything that has
any sort of macro script in it. As far as I know, even if you get a
macro virus, it will only affect MS apps like Office, Outlook and IE,
but can't do anything to the rest of the Mac...again, I think.

> The big question is why doesn't your work PC or mail server have AV softs?

Oh, it does, it's just that I'm still relatively new here. I just got
hired, officially, about two weeks ago(was contract for about a month
and a half here, before that), and I really like this job. I would hate
to be the new guy who unleashed some virus on the company(assuming
McAfee or whatever they have here doesn't already the antidote). :)

Alright then. Here's some outtakes from the FAQ, submitted to GameFAQs
already, and once it's up I won't have to post such long messages as
this one (my own colleciton actually provided me with almost 42 percent
of the normal US releases). This is only US stuff here, assuming most of
your collection is North American (and since the FAQ's goal is to get
get complete US game coverage, not complete overall coverage, at least
not yet). This might be easier once the FAQ itself is up, but in case
you're about to run through your GD-ROMs, I figured I'd post it now.
First, here are the main English audio codes (certain game specific
warnings are not listed in this posting, and neither are the Japanese
warnings). You may encounter additional warnings; please describe the
speaker, the length, and the text which is read if you do.

Please give me information in the following format
Game Region/Audio/Extra Content
------------------------------------------------
Bangai-O US 2 No
Blue Stinger US 3 Yes; 18 bitmaps, many
of them swimsuits

Spacing isn't important; just the four kinds of info and the order given.

B. AUDIO CODES

1: 7 seconds, female, resonant: "Warning, this disc is for use only on
Sega Dreamcast."
1a: Same as 1, except it is 6 seconds (less silence on the track).
2: 1 minute 19 seconds, multilingual: First speaker, British woman "This
is a Dreamcast disc and is for use only on a Dreamcast unit; playing
this disc on a HiFi or other audio equipment can cause serious damage to
its speakers. Please stop this disc now." The following are guesses;
Second speaker: French man. Third speaker: German woman. Fourth speaker:
Spanish man. Fifth speaker: Italian woman.
3: 14 seconds, silent
4: 12 seconds, female: "This is a Dreamcast game disc. The first track
contains game data. Please do not play it on a normal CD player."
5: 6 seconds, male. "This disc is for use only on Sega Dreamcast."
6: 14 seconds, female. Same as the British portion of 2.
7: 16 seconds, male, with piano music. "This disc contains special data
for use only with Dreamcast, and cannot be played on a standard CD player."
8: 9 seconds, female, apparent Japanese pronunciation. "This is a
Microsoft Windows CE day disc for Dreamcast. Prease do not pray. Thank you."

Well, I've only brought Saturn games with me to work today, but next
week I am going to start bringing the DC stuff to work, checking through
it as well. I haven't found too many interesting things from the Saturn
games from yesterday. Mostly, a lot of the games will have an .exe
file(which I scan for viruses first, just in case) that will open a DOS
window then close it immediately. Also, most have their movies in .mov
files that WMP and Quicktime can't understand. About the only cool
thing, so far, has been all the Netlink pics and art I got off the Duke
Nukem 3D disc.

Am going to hit some more Saturn games today, with two CD-Rom's on this
PC at work, it goes pretty quick...but I can only stuff some many Saturn
games in my briefcase. ;)

I'll let ya'll know if I find anything interesting...

Well, that was thoroughly disappointing. About the only things I found
were the Bonus stuff on Nights that I already knew about, Puyo Puyo Tsu
will let you here all of the intermission, japanese conversations, Three
Dirty Dwarves has a "secret" folder that has the three profiles in it
and Mega Man 8 has a "Bonus" folder but all of the files in it are
".pac" so you can't do anything with them.

I also noticed that a lot of files on these games are in .pic files, yet
Quicktime and even Photoshop cannot open them. Is there an app out there
to open these files?

I know that SoftImage (http://www.softimage.com/home/) has a ".pic"
format. No idea if it's the same, but it probably is, as SoftImage has
long made softare used by gaming studios. There are filters for .pic for
the GIMP. I assume there are some Photoshop ones floating arouund..

Aha, looks like PC/Mac Photoshop filters can be found here.
