I have to ask, because I just finished listening to the American music for
Sonic CD for the first time...

Is there anyone out there who really thinks it's appropriare? Rousing?
Interesting for any reason other than the digital Q-Sound and instruments?

I could not believe that Sega allowed this particular game's soundtrack to turn
out like this. While Mr. Nilsen is obviously a great talent, the great majority
of songs I've heard from him have a very similar sound and feel. Unfortunately,
that feel lends itself more to the Ecco games of the world than Batmans. This
soundtrack would fit a cartoon show more than it would Sonic -- I had the
Japanese version of the game, and by comparison, all of the American music
is just plain inappropriate. The reason I liked Sonic CD was that there was
a certain dynamic feel brought on by the music. The US version is mellow
with some rock moments... *sigh*

Well I realy dig the tunes, and I like how they change from the
different time zones and what not. Ive never heard the Jap music though,
what is so different about it? The music in the American version is
great IMO, what do they have better on the Megadrive?

The music is just completely different. Japanese seems like tecno and
stuff while american seems kiddie like. I HATE the american version of
the music and to me it is a big difference. I might be able to get used
copies if anyone is interested.

I do enjoy the music, and I think that Mr. Spencer is an accomplished composer
in his own rite. The reason the SOA changed the music is that they thought the
SOJ music was not very good. While I like Technopop as well, I have yet to hear
the forgein version of the music,(which reminds me, Fil the tape will be mailed
next week) so I can not pass judgement, but I think that the game stands on its
own.

Hey, you all have a good break. Hope Santa brings SEGA, or Santa is dead. :)

IMHO, Sonic CD (the Japanese version) has the BEST techno-style soundtrack
on any game...sometimes the CD even makes it into my portable, hehe...

I don't see how the soundtrack could not have been "good enough."

The other ridiculous reason is, "The Japanese soundtrack was in Japanese..."
Not a single track in Japanese (everyone sings in English!) so I don't see
how that could be a reason...

Bad move, SOA...*sigh*

Well, I am renting SONIC CD right now (and the CD player to go with it,
holy paperwork, Batman... B-), so I'll throw in my semi-solicited two bits
here.

(1) The music on the American version of SONIC CD is "nice".
(2) HOWEVER, it's not as enjoyable IMO as the music on the first two
SONIC cartridges.

As a disclaimer, I'm not saying I like _all_ the music on the first two
SONIC carts. Some of the tunes in the cartridges seem pretty boring as well
(Oil Ocean Zone and Hill Top Zone from SONIC 2 being examples). My tastes
tend to run towards fast-paced stuff like the Chemical Plant Zone.

The American SONIC CD music has a good style, but not the same "grab".
Playing through the tracks on the disc, the only one I thought was comparable
to my faves were "Track 20" (What zone is that? Haven't gotten that far yet)
.and the title theme song (I'm a sucker for the singing B-)

If the Japanese soundtracks are comparable to the first two cartridges,
then I'd definitely say Sega of America screwed up.

Comparable? Lets just say its the best soundtrack for any sonic. They did
a hell of a job for the Japanese version with all the techno type music/
Geez they couldn't even keep the title screen music in the american
version. I guess the american version sounds nice until you've heard the
Japanese version. With the Japanese version, I can listen to the
soundtrack alone and enjoy it.

Jer,
I like the soundtrack ALOT. I think we are entitled to our opinions and
I respect yours. To be honest, I expected the soundtrack to be riotous and
rocking, something really SONIC. I'm not disappointed by the mellowness of
the soundtrack.
I work a 9-to-5 job (of course, this is BS since it sure feels longer than
that). And to come to a game that is fast and fun with a soundtrack that
is catchy, rythmic, and not too radical is relaxing; I can take out my
fustrations with fun while not feeling "rushed" (this is weird since the
name of the game is SONIC CD).

Thanks

Well I bet you wouldn't like the music after hearing the Japanese
version. One must hear the japanese version before they can truly dislike
the american version, otherwise you have nothing to base it on.

Marty, you can't really say that about someones else's opinion. Personially
I have heard both and enjoy both, and feel that the American version stands
quite well on it's own. Why do you think that if it's Japanese it MUST be
better than the American version?

I never said if its Japanese it MUST be better. What i did say was listen
to the Japanese soundtrack before praising the American one. I was truly
disappointed after renting the American version to see what the fuss was
about. Problem is when a lot of games are brought over, they change them
from the original version. Mostly censorship, but then again that's snes,
and i don't play too many Mega Drive carts. What i do like about the
japanese version is you get something that is uncensored, and available
instead of waiting. Games such as Sonic CD and Silpheed, I was enjoying
for a couple of months before gamers here got to see it. What gets to me
is that had I waited for an American version, I would have been mad to
see the change in great music. The music is CD quality but too kiddie
like for me. The only reason I bought Sonic CD, the japanese version, was
because it was out now and I didn't have to wait. I figured its sonic so
i don't need to know japanese. That was the only reason i bought it,
because it was out. Now I'm glad i did. Now honestly if you had to pick
one, tell me which soundtrack you would prefer.

Well, if I have a choice it would be a mix of the two, because the Starlight
zone music on the american version is great, while I like the Japanese version
of the Metical Madness music better. If you want to understand why Sega changes
the voices in Silphead is because SEGA of America has a book that says what is
acceptablein America. Take a look at Shinning Force for the Japanese market,
there was a cross in the church, where in the American version does not allow
for the display of religous items. Where am I going with this, Sega has to
change the game for the market, and if they feel that the music has to change
then that's what they will do. As for the music in Sonic, again, this stands on
it's own, and for the Majority of the American players, they will never hear
the Original music.
