Yeah... I've been playing the NHL series since the release of the
original NHL Hockey. Then came the 93 NHLPA version, then NHL'94. They
were great games and you can't really compare them to '95 because '95 is
a completely redone game. I didn't feel at all that I was getting more of
the same, as with most Sonic games. (Although you gotta love Sonic!! ;)

The speed is great, and animation of the players is a great improvement. I
thought the player graphics were much improved from earier versions
because they now wore the proper uniform colors for their respective
teams. Even in '94, the genesis version did not update the colors of the
uniforms. Vancouver and NY Islanders uniforms are good exapmles.
(However, its worth noting that the SNES version did update the
characters sprites and colors properly, although it lacked in gameplay. ;)

The options of Season Play, Player Trades, etc. etc. etc. make the game
in a league of its own. And all of the features satisfied the needs of
most of the die hard fans and regular hockey game fans alike. :)

The only gripe I had with the release of NHL'95 was the bug ridden lot of
carts that were released on time. Sure they were release on time, but at
what cost?! The battery backup systems for most initial carts were buggy,
as was the infamous 128-bug, to which they have no solution for. They're
only response when I phoned the support hotline was: "Well... we found
that it was a hardware limitation. And we can't do anything about it."

Oh well... besides that, the game is still played really frequently, and
not collecting dust as I originally thought it would when I first found
out about the bugs. Its a great game, that plays very well and has loads
of options to keep things interesting. The replay value is high, but I'm
biased towards hockey games. ;D

Just my two cents.... and then some. :)

I agree in large part with your remarks about NHL '95: it IS a completely
redone game, with many new features that have made big changes in setup
(I refer to the bells and whistles). However, what I don't think '95
lives up to its predecessors is gameplay. OK OK, I agree that hockey has
a lot of stop start play, fast directional change, etc, but the fact
remains that the game is played on SKATES. With all these stop-on-a-dime
stops and bursts in the other direction have really taken a lot out of
the flow of play - the circling, looping, graceful lines that developed
in the old game - now play is much more sudden, sloppy and...well the
term i would use is trashcan hockey. I dunno, this may be a little bit
more like the real thing, but perhaps a bridge too far.

This is not true for the Islanders. The color scheme reamins the same in
'95 as it was in '94, and it is WRONG.

Each of these options has flaws. We've talked about them enough.

NHL '94 is slow, but I have gone back to it at times. As you can clear
the player records for NHL '94 just as you reset the cart for '95, I
found it fun to start building records for individual players all over
again. Oddly enough, what NHL '94 needed was incremental change, not
the overhaul that promised more than it could deliver. For if you play
NHL 95 as you do NHL 94 (playoffs only), it is a better game (although I
find it easier to score in 95 than in 94). -- Brooks Simpson
