This is a question directed to those readers who have played lots of
videogames: are there any games that have progressive rock soundtracks?
I can think of a few places in games where the background music is
not in 4/4 time (for example, Sagat's stage in the original Street
Fighter II, the intro for Night Warriors: Darkstalker's Revenge, and
one of the dungeons in Shining Wisdom for the Saturn). On the whole,
though, there is very little prog in videogames.
So, I was just wondering if anyone else has found this kind of music
in any of the games they have played.
Sean
Well, 99% of music in video games are either techno or alternative (yuk!).
Hmm...well, Mega Man X3 sounds a bit like prog rock.

As far as I've seen, all of the early Microprose flight simulations (circa
Gunship 2000 and F-117A) open up with a Keith Emerson-esque synth riff, and the music sounds sorta ELPish. Great games, by the way :)

Rumor has it that ASIA is working on a full soundtrack to a new Sony
playstation game.
The problerm would be that you'd get into the music, and stop
concentrating on your game.

Rick Wakeman did a piece for a videogame some time ago. Was it Captain
Blood? Jeez, I can't remember.

Captain Blood featured music by Jean Michel Jarre (from the Zoolook album).

Captain Blood's music was by JM Jarre. I still have it in a box

I believe it was Microcosm. Unfortunately I doubt you will see many great
prog rock soundtracks on games as it is just to easy to throw a techno
soundtrack on them and placate the masses. Prog rock also has never
really made it into the mainstream, so I doubt we will see it in games.

Unless it's by Braindance. I bet those guys would get into making music
for a video game. It would seem an appropriate match. BTW I'm not putting
them down, I love their stuff.
Not that they were ever really prog, but you know Journey had their own
video game for the Atari 2600, based on and named after their album
Escape, and it had some (REAL simple) music from the album in it... Those
were the days! Somebody get me my parachute pants!

Bolo (version for PC at least) has a soundtrack by Nick Tyndall

I've heard a lot of prog-sounding music in video games. Take Herzog Zwei for example. Some of the music
has a distinctive Iron Maiden (Yes, I consider them prog -- frequent tempo changes, odd time signatures,
incredible melodies and vocals, virtuos musicians -- for the most part on the last one -- etc.) sound to it,
like the level with the "quicksand" in the middle of the board. Thunderstrike for Sega CD has a track or two
that are closer to the Dream Theater side of the spectrum. That's all I can remember for now, but I hear it
all the time.

I ain't exactly sure as to what "progressive rock" is, but I think that
the Lightening Force/Thunder Force 4 soundtrack qualifies.
