PS1: Algol (yes there was an extra 'l') is being taken over by some new dark religion.
It's latest convert is Lassic, a previously kind hearted ruller of the system.
Palma is a normal fertile planet. Motiva is a desert and and Dezoloris is an
ice world. It should be noted that Humans populate Palma, Motiva's indigenous life
look like the Jawas from Star Wars (though human populate the towns), and Dezoloris
native are tall thin blue skinned humanoids. The game starts out with our main
lady Alis holding her brother as he dies. She swears to continue his infiltration
of Lassic's forces and get revenge. There are 3 other characters: Myau ( a half-cat
half rabbit creature.. anime fans picture Ryoohki, but with the parts reversed).
Odin, a hunter and Noah, an Esper/mage. After killing Lassic, you go back to the
governor of Motiva and he is possessed by DARKFLAX,.. you beat him, driving him
from the Gov's body and the story's over.
PS2: a thousand years after Alis' triumphant battle. The whole game starts out with
our main character Rolf(names may be changed) dreaming the final battle between
DarkFlax and Alis. We also meet Nei, and mixture of biomonster and human DNA. Rolf
is an agent for the Government. Motiva is now Green thanks to Mother Brain and
Climacontrol. Parma (note spelling change) is now a utopia of thought. Dezo
(note name change) is still an icy planet. There are about 6 other people you
can control.. it's been a while so if I miss one, I apologize.: Amy, a nurse, Rudo,
a hunter, Anna, a bounty hunter, Hugh, a biologist, Kain, a mechanic and a female
theif with red hair, who's name I can't remember for the life of me. Anyway,
story goes like this (excluding minor plots). You must find out the reason
Mother Brain is creating the Bio-monsters. You find a record from the laboratory
where the BioM.s are being born, they point to problem in ClimaControl.. You
go there and find NeiFirst. Nei was once part of NeiFirst but seperated because
NeiFirst was evil. Nei tries to fight NeiFirst and dies as part of the storyline,
(on a side note this death is handled with particularly good taste and actually
made me sad when she died.. as opposed to the Final Fantasy series which handles
death kind of nonchalantly (noted exception on Cyan's family :)) Anyway,
before Neifirst dies she messes with the Climacontrol, so the lake in the center
of the continent is over flowing. So you must go to all the damns and open them.
Just as you open the last damn, You are captured and placed on a satellite
orbitting Motiva. Basicallly, you're in jail. The satellite begins moving and
you try to find out what's happening.. you black out. Your Dream comes back to
you.. Alis screams for help.. (awesome drama for a video game :) You wake up
to meet an old space pirate. (NOTE: is PS1 space travel is common and easily
done,. is PS2 it is no longer done since a "great accident" of two ships
colliding,.. you later find out Rolf is a descendant of Alis, and he originally
was on the the planes that collided as a baby, but was magically saved) Anyway
the Pirate shows you what happen.. namely the satellite crashed into Parma,
destroying it. Anyway, from here on out, you meet an Esper who's been
sleeping for 1000 years. I don't recall his name. The important thing is he
is Noah. ( I've heard several source state that Noah's original PS1 japanese
name wasn't noah, but something else, and that in PS2 they didn't change the
name to match the ps1 US character name of Noah.) Then you go collect the
Ultimate armor/weapon for the final showdown with Mother Brain. Before you
do though you fight Dark Force. he's inside a box you must open. When you
do you hear " Here is a gift from our world to yours..." DF is damn hard.
Then you walk a little further and fight Mother brain ( cake compared to DF).
After you kill her/it The ending sequence starts and You hear the history
of Earth and it's destruction. " And in the next instant Rolf and company were
attacked by several hundred earthmen.." the end.... Wild ending :) Total
cliff hanger.
PS3: Things get weird here since you can get multiple endings and each one put a
somewhat different spin on the story line. Basically this is how it starts..
1000 years ago there was a great war between Laya and Orakio, Laya used monsters
Orakio used robots. In their final battle they killed one another, and the
the layans and the orakians have been sperated ever since. In terms of a quick
overview you find out 1. Orakio and laya did fight but halfway through the final
battle they realized they were being used by DarkForce, so they combined and fought
him, and sealed him away. They died in the process. The planets (7) are really
just 1 large spaceship. (no duh,.. as if you could use underground tunnel for
inter-planetary travel.) Now here's where everything goes to heck.. 1000 years
go Palm was destroyed ( note spelling change AGAIN). Your ship was launched from
Palm just before it was destroyed. There were also 100 other ships, all like the
one your in, that were destroyed not too long after take off.(Hypothesis:
After Darkforce was defeated in PS2, he wasn't killed, but rather he left the
group to Mother Brain and the Earth men. He then went to the Palm ships and began
destroying them 1 by 1 until he was sealed up by Laya and Orakio.) Anyway,
you end up releaing Dark Force in PS3, then defeating him again.. he says
he'll be back just like he is every 1000 years. In 3 of the 4 endings,
the ships goes to a third planet of a distant solar system. in one of them
they recieve a radio transmission from "Houston."
Well there it is for 1,2, & 3. If PS4 ever comes down in price, I'll add it
to this long and unique history. Please by all means follow up if you wish
to correct or add something. Thanks

What? You're kidding! You were SAD! I couldn't wait till that damn
Nei died. Now Phantasy Star IV when Alys dies... then I was sad. In
Final Fantasy II when the twins are turned to stone... that was sad.
But Nei!
Incedentally, I just helped my friend finnish Phantasy Star IV. _I_ did
the boring parts near the end where its necessary to go through the
various castles like... 9 gazillion times to defeat those damn cheesy
leaders *sigh*, so If you want, I can give you the PSIV plot and you can hook
it up. 'cuz after reading the PS1-III plots I don't see the connection
between the first three and the last four except that, well the planets
are the same.
There's Motavia and Dezolis. Parma or Palma? Was destroyed and is now an
asteroid belt. There's two space stations Kuran and Zelan that were to
take over Mother Brain... and you find out that Darkforce isn't the all
powerful
evil thingy. No, it's The Profound Darkness, of which Darkforce is simply a
minion or a wimpy manifestation. Yes... wimpy. You also find out that the
entire Algo star system is actually a seal placed by The Great Light on
The Profound Darkness when the Profound Darkness was defeated. And every 1000
years a cloaked planet by the name of Rykros comes around the Algo Star System
weakening the seal and allowing DF out, but also to remind the Algonians the
reason that they were there. But humans being humans, they forgot. That,
in a nutshell is PSIV. For a more detailed explanation I'll have to ask my
friend.

Just my $.02
I agree that while being stuck w. Nei was annoying at times (you
couldn't chose other members) you really depended on her speed (she always
attacked first) power (pretty good offense) and healing magic (I always used up
Nei's RES spells before I broke out the Trimates!). It is because I depended
on her in terms of the mechanics of the game itself that her death was a REAL
loss, that, in a way, paralleled the emotional loss of the characters. That's
supposed to be what role-playing is all about, isn't it?
As for Alys in PS IV, and the twins in FF II, I really didn't feel
anything for them. Granted, the plots in these games were more intricate than
PS II, but combat was so simplified and easy that it really didn't make much of
a difference if they were there or not. In order to really attach to
characters in an RPG, you need to make the characters needs and the players
needs the same. It increases the bond between the player and those under his
or her control and it draws that person further into the game.
I know that sounds a little strange, but it's all IMHO.

Have you played any other PS game besides II? If you had, you would
have learned that there are a lot of plot references to earlier PS games. I
only had PS IV for a short while (I returned it, jus wasn't worth $100), but
I picked up a lot of references to PS I, a few to 2 and even 3. If I can find
it cheap, I'll get it again. I'm dying to find out more about the connection
between Alys & Rune (I didn't finish the game so don't spoil it for me).
Something about their mysterious shared past, uncertain ages, and incidents
like people mentioning a man who matches Rune's description staring at the
statue of Alis Landale in that village, and Alys calling his name at the moment
of her death, really made me wonder who Alys and Rune really were, and if they
were in anyway related to Alis and Noah (or Lutz?) from PS I.
BTW - Does anyone else feel that PS IV could've really, and I mean,
REALLY kicked ass if they had tweaked combat a little to make it harder, and
made the dungeons more complex (as in I or II). As it stands now, it's OK,
but not as good as I or II. (I liked the music, gfx, and anime intermission,
tho.)
