Sega has always produced the best commercials. Sonic, Streets of Rage, etc.
Even the last wave of Saturn commercials were great. The NBA Action 98 one
cracked me up every time! And who could forget the commercials they were
running when N64 finally made it out? They shot it like a Clay Pigeon! I think
that was a first in video game ad history!
I know I'm forgetting alot of the great ads Sega has done over the years, so I
ask all of r.g.v.s to think of the Sega commercials that stood out in their
memory. Also, what do you think the Dreamcast commercials will be like? Here's
what I imagine:
The screen is dark, it slowly gets lighter and lighter until we see the
silhouette of Sonic. He's laughing maniacally. Brighten to reveal a crushed PS
and N64 beneath him, he then strikes the thumbs up pose as the DC logo appears
around him. Finally, the blue Sega logo flashes on the screen for a split
second.
Play those for a month or so before the release, then as it draws closer start
showing clips of gameplay.
Just a simple example. Anyway, whaddaya think sirs?

I also enjoyed Sega's print ads during the Genesis days. Not the "Nintendon't"
variety, but the two pagers featuring a large comical picture on the right and text
describing it and the game on the second page. The majority of those were extremely
well done -- humorous and eye catching.
I was not a fan of the Saturn's second wave of ads featuring the bald woman. Bald
blue women, as I think most gamers and marketing people with a brain would
realize, does not inspire one to purchase a gaming system. I hope the Dreamcast ads
feature the humor that made Sega's commercials stand out from the rest.
Have you seen Crash Bandicoot's commercials (of course you have.... they're old)?
Don't they remind you of those great Sega commercials?
Somewhat pointless,

Those early "Theater of the Mind" Saturn ads were pathetic, though.

Well, to me, they were just dumb. They didn't grab you, they didn't explain
anything about the system, just *bleah*. Of course, at my age (41) I'm not
the target market, so who am I to judge?
However, you're actually the first person I've heard who liked them; I've
heard a lot of complaints, and several of my friends think this was the
beginning of the many mistakes SOA made with the Saturn. So who knows?
Another question...where were these ads actually shown on TV? I watch very
little television, but I *never* saw one of these ads on TV (I saw them all
on a Sega promo video tape that Babbages and such got). I've seen Sony and
Nintendo ads, so where *were* these?
That commercial killed me. I still talk about it today.
Yeah, those were funny. They shoulda kept Crash in commercials for his own game
though. The one were he had that old pick-up or whatever and was taunting
Nintendo in their parking lot was funny, even though the 1st Crash can't hold a
torch to Mario64 IMHO.

I still disagree about the ads being "pathetic." The ad campaign's aim was to
show "the next level," and the Theatre of the Eye commercials did a wonderful
job conveying the sensory overload one had when exposed to the next-generation
of graphics... well, for the time, at least. That seems to be pretty much the
aim, too, of every new system's release.... to top the graphical capabilities
of its predecessors. I think the ads were great in that effect and simply a
good "Sega" ad.

That's just something I would like to see, something I think might grab the
attention of the viewers. Your thoughts?
Later,
Steve
