A SPECIAL LOOK BACK-THE HISTORY OF CYBERGAMES
Lately I have been thinking about the phenomenal growth of
CyberGames, and how I never really thought it could become this large.
I first started CyberGames as a group of people on Prodigy who kept
in contact with each other by e-mail, exchanging e-mail about hot
gaming info found. However, I noticed the only one participating
would be me! I made many attempts to get people active, including
a points system, give-aways, and a name contest.
What was this group to be called? A member came up with the
name "CyberPlay" and we did pretty well. As I started sending
information more and more often, I decided the name CyberPlay was a
bit too vague. I got a suggestion for "CyberGames" and it stuck!
Since I had been updating every couple days or so, and no
longer expecting others to participate, someone suggested
that I compile all the information sent during a period of time in
one message. GREAT IDEA! I thought. I decided weekly updates were
the best way to go. Part-way through Week 1, I thought expanding
the information would naturally go with weekly updates-the newsletter
was born.
News, Reviews, Codes and more followed, as the newsletter
gained in length and popularity week after week. I had many members
on my mailing list, and became quite busy. I had many other projects,
including a similar Internet focused list called Intersurf, and a group
of Sega and TG-16 fans called SATB, or Sega and Turbo Backers.
At this time, I began my first web site, which would focus on CyberGames.
Afterwords, an Intersurf and SATB area followed. CyberGames was mainly
just a compilation of the information available from previous
newsletters,
and advertising for more members. I dropped Intersurf and merged
SATB with CyberGames to focus on the gaming club. This freed up some
time, and Planet Saturn was born-a bi-weekly newsletter all about
Sega Saturn.
This is when I launched my later site, called Steve's Cheat
Sheet. This site had a CyberGames and Planet Saturn area, but
was out of place since my main page focused on codes, which hampered
the popularity. To increase the popularity of my new web site,
I renamed and redesigned it for CyberGames, and merged Planet Saturn
with CyberGames. Since then, my web site and CyberGames has been
gaining popularity faster and faster. CyberGames is a lot more
popular than originally planned, and I have no plans to slow down.
I have only plans to speed up and future dreams include a print
magazine and stores. If you are one of the original members of
CyberGames, please contact me! I Thank you for your continued
support throughtout the last year and a half.
