Until SM64, I hadn't played Mario games all that much. I have a few
questions, however:

(1) I always thought that the Princess' name was "Princess Daisy". Now it
appears to be "Peach". Are they two different princesses, or is one a
nickname?

(2) I thought the bad guy was "King Koopa". Is this Bowser?

Thanks!

Okay, here goes...

Well, at first it was simply "Princess Toadstool." Then, in Super Mario
Land, she became "Daisy" because "Princess" wouldn't fit on the game boy
screen. However, in the Japanese Mario Land, she was "Peach." I don't
know why they changed it, but eventually Nintendo decided that her name
was Princess Peach Toadstool, and it's the same all over the world now.

Bowser IS the King Koopa. He is king of the koopas, a tribe of turtles.
The enemies are koopas, and Bowser's the king. In Super Mario Brothers
2, there was some confusion as to his name, but in Mario 3 they stuck
with Bowser.

Well, in the US she has been known mainly as Princess Toadstool. In
Japan, she has always been known as Peach. For SM64, they decided to
combine it, more or less, and bring the name Peach to the US. So she
is known as Princess Peach Toadstool. Princess Daisy is the damsel in
distress in the Game Boy game Super Mario Land. Which, by the way,
really has nothing to do with the SMB series, SMW, or SM64. (Also,
there was Mario's girlfriend in Donkey Kong. Her name was Pauline,
but no one seems to know what happened to her.)

This is also a case of US names vs. Japan names. In Japan he is known
simply as King Koopa, whereas in the US he was given the name Bowser.
But it should be noted that Koopa is the name of the race of little
turtles in the game. So calling him King Koopa makes sense, since he
is king of the koopas. Personally, I always thought Bowser sounded
like a dog's name. I think in the old animated SMB Super Show, they
referred to him only as King Koopa, but I'm not sure.

P.S.: I was reading an old interview with Shigeru Miyamoto in a
Nintendo Player's Guide from 1991. He was talking about hardware
limitations and the future. And he predicted that maybe someday Mario
would wear metallic clothes! Weird, huh?

I think he was referred to both.

Yeah it's princess toadstool, I guess Peach is kina' a pet name to mario.
However, King Koopa==Bowser. because he is "bowser King of the koopas."
The koopas being the turtles e.g. koopa troopa, and koopa paratroopa
