Hello everyone,
I have a vague wisp of a memory, and I'm wondering, if these really
existed, or if this is a complete fabrication of my imagination. I seem to
remember as a young child, seeing Televisions at K-Mart that had Video game
systems built into them. I am not totally sure what platform they were-I
THINK the 8 bit Nintendo, but it's possible they were something else. These
were just normal TV's that also had the ability to play video games-think a
TV/VCR but TV/Nintendo instead. I do not believe they were licensed by
Nintendo-they were "compatible with" The timeframe would probably have been
1989, give or take a couple years.
Am I just making things up-did these combo units exist? I've searched
and NEVER found any info on them, which leads me to think I must be
mistaken-but I honestly think I saw such things. Do they exist?

Thanks,
Eric Kotz

Well...

A NES/TV all-in-one unit does exist and was an officially licensed
product produced by Sharp - but as far as I know, it was only released
in Japan. There was a model produced with a built-in Super Famicom,
too, also by Sharp.

However, I have an old issue of EGM that was announcing the Japanese
release of the SFC/TV and it mentioned the previous FC version, but
also stated that a version of the system was available briefly in the
U.S. But I've always assumed that to be some type of misprint, as
I've never heard of anyone owning one and certainly have never seen
one (even in pictures), aside from the Japanese FC version.

So maybe there was a US version after all and that's what you're
thinking of. Sure would love to find definitive proof that a U.S.
model existed, though.

Interesting-maybe I'm not totally making things up. I seem to remember the
cartridge loading into the side of the TV, and I also don't think it used
the same NES controllers as consoles-black ones maybe? Sharp would very
possibly be a brand for the TV I'm thinking of (I know it wasn't like Sony,
JVC, Panasonic, or even RCA...I seem to remember it being along the lines of
Sharp, Magnavox, Sylvania, etc)
Was there a Genesis/Mastersystem TV similar to this also that you know of?

Thanks,

Oh, one more note, I seem to remember this being a larger (for the time)
set...think like at least 19", with 25" being more likely. It wasn't a 13"
set.

I really should stop talking to myself.
Some more searching turned up this:

a thread about it, one of the people there also mentions K-mart having them.
Also the name "Game TV" does sound right. my gut says this is what I was
thinking of-anyone have a picture by chance?
I also found this

about 1/2 way down someone claims to have a TV with an NES in it. While AGH
assumes he means Famicom, I personally tend to think he actually meant what
he said, NES.

No, it devinately was a raster based system and was an actual TV you
could also watch TV on. Wasn't a Vectrex.

You're not dreaming, Kmart did have a TV with built in NES deck. And it
had the Official Seal of Quality so it was licensed by Nintendo. I
don't remember the make or model of the TV but it's fairly rare and I'd
like to have one just for it's odd factor.

There are many more such TV/video game hybrid that were mainly used in
hotels like Genesis, SNES, even Atari 2600. They are on limited time
pay to play type so the game can get expensive real easily.

Has pictures of the unit in question. It's 19" and is shown playing a US
game.

Lot's of cool things at that site, BTW, check them out!
