They said the best part of the game was the 1st level, and an entire
game could have been built around it. They didn't say anything
spectacular about any of the other levels.
I am real dubious of this title. I think a lot of people are going to
be dissapointed, especially at the price point they want. I'll probably
just try and rent this one.

SOTE should be on time.

What is the latest news on shadows of the empire? I heard from a friend
in the video games industry that it was ready to go, they have 400,000
carts all mastered and ready to go. The rumour was that it was due out
around thanksgiving (today I take it).
Has anybody got any more info on this..... like what each of the
different stages involves etc... I did hear it ws pretty easy.

It will be released anywhere from December 2 or a few days after.

The latest Nintendo Power has an article about the game. Basically, there
are two different types of stages: Commando and pilot. The command stages
(I believe there are five or six) are much like Dark Forces, except you
can switch to exterior camera angles.
The pilot stages range anywhere from driving swoops over the desert to
manning the guns in a transport freighter.
In all of the stages, though, there will ALWAYS be full 360 freedom. Even
when you are manning the guns, you can aim anywhere. Sort of like using
the turrets on an old game called Hyperspeed, I'd imagine.
Anyway, this IS NOT another Rebel Assault. Believe me.

Okay -- this is the _last_ time I say this:
Shadows has ten levels, most of them Mario/Doom style and the rest
flying ships and such. Granted, it looks like a short game, but the
levels are supposed to be _large_. The variation in piloting is:
snowspeeder, flight control; Outride, sometimes guns and sometimes
flight; swoop, flight control. The shooting stages are supposed to be
better than typical Doom because you can aim and twist your gun like the
characters in the movies. It'll cost 79.99 US. And I have no idea how
the saving works.
The COST may be $79.99 at EB or software Etc. or one of those other
places that charge high prices, but Hell I have it on Pre-Order from
TRU and it was only $69.99. I'm sure you'll be able to get it even
cheaper at Target or Wal-Mart, or someplace like that, though I don't
want to wait a bit, and maybe not get my hands on a copy right away,
so I just Pre-Ordered a copy and pay a little more.
I watched the demo cycle through the other levels and they look pretty good
as well, although not earth shattering. I'll withold final judgement until
I play them but they don't seem quite as impressive as Mario and Waveracer
(although they are *much* better than MKT).
It was tough finding this game. I had to go all over the place to get it.
I finally tracked it down at Kaybee at the Walpole Mall. Final cost was
around $85, with tax.
I have to say that I've become a true hater of Toys R Us and EB's reserve
policy. I think it ought to be first come, first serve. I went to both
places, they had the game but wouldn't sell it. At this point, I won't
bother for future releases.
This whole idea of having to reserve a game two months in advance is
ridiculous, I don't want to give them my money until I have the product in
my hands.

My local EB doesn't charge a penny to put you on the reserve list. Here
in Tampa you just give them your name, they put you on the list, and
call you when the game comes in. No down payment neccesary and no
obligation on your part if you find it somewhere else first.

Using: OUI PRO 1.5.0.2 from http://www.dvorak.com
Here are my impressions of the game.
First of all, I don't know who thought of the "bright" idea to take the
original music, >digitize< it all into one big sample, >greatly< reduce
the quality (which is perhaps 8 bit 16 khz or lower and actually worse
than the music in SNES Star Wars games).
Now for the game: the graphics look incredible--in fact, they carry the
entire game. The game itself is devoid of any gameplay. It is perhaps one
of the most moronic games I have played. I figured, after Dark Forces
Lucasfilm really knew how to do a good DOOM clone. Well, I guess I was
wrong. Shadows has one of the worst DOOM engines I have ever played. By
now all DOOM clones have the bouncing movement (which occurs in real life
but is filtered out by your brain). Why does Shadows not have it? It makes
movement look very unrealistic (the character is "gliding" along).
Secondly, there is absolutely no strategy involved in the game. You run,
shoot, run some more, get shot. Wow--great principle! Even DOOM had more
strategy.
As it stands, the only thing carrying the game is the graphics, which are
incredible (thanks to the N64).
That reminds me: does anyone know whether Best Buy will let me return it
in exchange for another game? I should try Killer Instinct--as it can't be
any worse.

I really don't know what youre listening to. Although I was a bit
disappointed with the sound myself (the quality is noticeably lower
than KI Gold), it's still sounds very good. Maybe you should check
your speakers.

To me, the game was meant to be played in behind the back mode. It;s
got much more personality (for the lack of a better word) and is more
effective. And I don't see how you can say that it's "devoid of any
gameplay" -- I think that the worst part is the horrible framerate and
loose control. The gameplay is what saved it for me. It's not brain
surgey, but it's engrossing fun. I pooped it in at 6:30 today, and
when I decided to call it quits, I was shocked to find out it was
9:30. And that was only playing through 4 levels.
>Secondly, there is absolutely no strategy involved in the game. You run,

If you're going to play this on easy mode, then forget it. Even on
medium mode you can run around blasting away at everything. Why don't
you try it on hard or Jedi and see how much strategy you need? It's
not the brainiest game out there, but the enemy AI gets much better as
you up the difficulty. That's, if you can pass the first level.

As far as I know, none of those types of stores will let you return or
exchange opened games unless they're defective (in which case they'll
turn around and give you the same game). You may be able to tell them
it's defective (how would they know?) on the hopes that it's sold out
and they'll let you pick another game. Personally, I think KI Gold is
the better game.

Nope.
They have a complete 'buyer-b-ware' attitude.

Buying customers who could have just as easily made a phone call and
put themselves on the reserve list, thereby avoiding the entire "problem"...
When someone signs up on the reserve list for a game but doesn't claim
it, it generally keeps the game away from other customers for one or two days,
tops. Yes, this can be annoying. But the alternatives are: to require payment
in advance to reserve a game, which creates incredibly hard feelings if a game
is delayed or cancelled, and requires customers to pay for the privilege of
waiting for the games they want (see Toys R Us); or not having a reserve list
at all, which basically results in giving the popular games to the people who
have nothing better to do than zoom to the store the minute the popular games
arrive (see Kay Bee, Target). Given these choices, the reserve list seems
like the most reasonable choice to me.
> There are too many punk kids out there who reserve games., only
>hoping to be able to buy it when it arives.
How dare they. You're absolutely right; customers should be required
to present a certified financial statement of their net worth when they
reserve a game, so they don't wind up annoying you. (Of course, you realize
that if a store does away with the reserve list, the "punk kids" with nothing
better to do than hover around the store waiting for the game shipment will
be the ones getting the popular games, right?)
