N64 screen flicker when I first start up

When I first put in a game (after it's been off all night) the image on
the screen is distorted, with flickering and vertical reduction of size.
At first it only happened with Mario but now with Wave Race also.
Resetting or shutting off and then on don't make it go away immediately.
Only after just waiting does it return to normal.

Is this normal? Does this happen to anyone else? Could it be that
something in the circuitry is just warming up? Or is my n64 defective?

Sounds more like your TV is the problem, rather then the console....you
may want to have it looked at or ask about it to a TV knowledgable person.

This never happens with my TV alone, so I don't think it is the TV. Also
the introductory Nintendo screen is perfect, with no flicker. Only once
the game itself starts does this happen.

It is your power adoptor's problem or you are having unstable power supply.
