Yoshi's Island is pretty good and trying to get 100% on the levels will
certainly give you hours of exploring.

I, too dislike the feuding that can erupt from responses to this sort of
question, but I'll throw in my 2 cents-
Either of the Earthworm Jim games are excellent. the animation is
entertainment in and of itself, and it has (IMHO) excellent replay value.
The sequel is maybe a touch easy, but there's still a good ammount of
hidden stuff to find.
Also, DKC 2 ("Diddy Kong's Quest" I believe) is due out soon, so that may
be a good bet if you're not in too big a hurry.

Add my kudos. Love all those cows!

I don't know. Maybe. DKC1 kinda sucked, IMO.

One thing I forgot to mention when I first gave a list of cool
side-scrollers: Star Wars, by LucasArts. You can get the whole series used
or in bargain bins for less than $20 apiece, and they're massive fun! If
you've ever seen the movies (and who hasn't), they'll blow you away with
their accuracy to the original. And the graphics and sound kick total butt.

Sorry to be so negative, but I thought first the Star Wars
game by LucasArts was poor. I didn't enjoy one bit of it.
The gameplay seemed unoriginal. The scene where you walk
around one of the desert crawlers was too hard and the
control wasn't up to par. The speeder scene was just dull.
I stopped playing after that. I didn't find one bit of
original gameplay.
My choice for a good forgotten side scroller is Cybernator
by Konami. This is a translation of NCS's Assault Suits
Valken. The control is wonderful; the whole controller is
used yet all the commands seem natural to me. The game
also has very varied gameplay, including the standard jump,
shoot, and scroll the screen yourself, standard shooter
fare, levels with the gravity turned off, levels where you
are sliding along at great speed, and levels where you
have an infinite boost from your jet pack.
It's probably not perfect, though. It is too linear,
mainly because you have a mission to complete instead of
messing around. But you can get lost in some levels and
find goodies, like powerups or cave-dwelling albino
bunnies. It is also too easy, especially if you cheat with
the Napalm weapon. But it does have an incredible music
score and gorgeous graphics.
Everyone is forgetting about Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's
Island! This game is truly excellent and is set up to any
player's skill level. I wish Nintendo would make this game
the heavily marketed game of the season instead of another
Donkey Kong Country, which I feel wasn't deserving of so
much attention when the game was so dull and unoriginal.

I enjoyed this game, actually. But I agree; the control wasn't as
'tight' as could have been, and personally I thought the difficulty on SW
and ESB games were pretty tough. Still, I loved the sound and music,
and the graphics were pretty well done overall.

Yes! I loved this game the instant I popped it into my SNES! Still, why
did they take out the character faces from the dialogue strip? You can
see the faces very clearly in the instructions. Also, they're missing
the 'final' sequence where the dictator commits suicide. My guess is
that they felt that they didn't need the profiles in the American
version, and that since this game was 'pre MKII' Nintendo didn't like
having blood or 'obvious' deaths (!) like a suicide. Anyone care to comment?

Very true. Even though your suit is kinda sluggish, it still feels
right. Once you get the controls down, you can do anything in this
game. I really liked the way you could 'power-up' your suit the way you
wanted it - but I think there could have been a better way to customize
your suit. Still, the game is damn near perfect in my books, and I think
that in the years to come, people will consider this one a classic.

Haven't played SMW2:YI, but it seems fantastic - everyone is praising the
technique and challenge of the game. I enjoyed DKC personally, but I did
find that it did follow a 'formula'. Not to say that parts of the game
weren't original, but I'm a smidge tired of hop-n-bop games. Still, DKC
was a very good effort by Rare and Nintendo. I hear DKC2 has better
technique and challenge than part one. I'll have to try it...
