N64 is better than any other system out on the market. As far as the slow
game release issue goes, that was well known before the system even came out
on the market. I would rather be patient and allow them to produce the
games properly rather than rush them out on the market with flaws.
The game controller is well designed, and is probably the best game
controller I've ever used (I've tried Playstation, Sega, and they suck
compared to N64).
The rumble pack what did you expect??? It vibrates as advertised.
You really need to lighten up. You probably work for Sega or Sony and just

Of course Nintendo is doing it for themselves. They are a business.
Businesses exist to make money. Do you actually think Nintendo is a
charity? You have a very naive view of Nintendo.

Never a more true word spoken! Ever wondered why N64 has so little 3rd
party support? When they make a game for the N64, it has to be
released on cart (usually). NCL wants them to take an absolute minimum
of a couple of hundred thousand carts, PAID IN ADVANCE!!!
So when, for instants, Lucasarts makes a 64 Mbit game, they get
charged an arm and a leg! NCL says: RAM prices are up! Yet NCL can
release a bigger game for half price!

A bit. Not that /any/ other hardware has a better release rate for

Haha, talk about accessories. N64 accessories are the best.
Look at the PSX: poorly designed standard controller that is one of
the /worst/ in the industry for action games. Look at PSX memory
card: poorly designed with overly large blocks, a big waste of memory.

Yes, yes. PSX may have lots of games, but the accessories are not any

Where would we be without Atari? Yet you don't see me buying any of their
products. I don't see what you mean by "Do you really want the N64 to end up
like the PSX or Saturn?" If the N64 userbase ever comes close to the PSX
userbase, then we'll re-examine your statement. It's interesting that N64's
sell cheaper in Japan than the PSX and still does several times worse.
I think you're stretching it a bit when you imply that Nintendo is some
humanitarian organization out to benefit gamers. You even proved it yourself
when you said that they would be out of business a long time ago if they
neglected their customers. *In other words*, they did it for business.

sarcasm, i see. Well in all fairness, Nintendo did mess up by allowing
crappy third party tittles for its NES. So now you know why Nintendo
charges an arm and a leg for third party companies to make thier games, if
the game doesn't sell well, that company goes bankrupt.

It's OK for RPGs and such (as would almost any controller), but
is painfully inadequate for any kind of action games, including
non-fighting games. (Fighting games are not my cup of tea, either.)
This is a majority opinion in the Japanese mailing list for the action
game, Umihara Kawase.

Quite a number of people in Japan have problems with FF7. (They have
seen more console RPGs than only those ported to English.) Most
people in Umihara Kawase (an interesting action game) mailing list (in
Japanese) have problems with the standard controller.

I'm not all biased against the PSX as you think; you have seen too

comments on your beloved system has to be biased.
There are good things about the PSX that I admit; I gave a few PSX
games favorable reviews on my HP.

Haha, talk about accessories. N64 accessories are the best.
Look at the PSX: poorly designed standard controller that is one of
the /worst/ in the industry for action games. Look at PSX memory
card: poorly designed with overly large blocks, a big waste of memory.
The above isn't bias? Yeah ok.

Well at least this time I got a decent answer out of you.
Remember how many horrible games were made out for the NES? Now remember
how many LESS crappy tittles were made for the SNES? The reason for this is
because Nintendo raised their standards and pricing for third party
companies to make for their system. Hey, I don't blame them for putting a
little pressure on Acclaim or Konomi and make them tweak the game to
perfection before it ships out to your local store. I just don't want to
see another "power glove" or "adventures of Dizzy" underneath my christmas
tree!
You do make a good point about a great game dissappearing because a small
company didn't have enough funds (or something to that effect).

Ahem...
Here's the deal with the high cost of carts:
1) They're expensive to make. Not individually, but they cost a small
fortune when manufactured in large quantities.
2) Nintendo 64 chips cost more to make than they do to buy (or so I've been
told). Nintendo makes up for this loss by hiking up the price of carts.
In a nutshell, Nintendo loses money, Nintendo makes more money back, game
developers and consumers get screwed.
You're right, though. Nintendo doesn't TRY to put companies out of
business, but that's essentially what they do. I mean, didn't Acclaim just
lay off like, one third of its employees?

I find it interesting that you attribute that to Nintendo, based soley on the
fact that Acclaim is a licensed N64 developer. The reality is that Nintendo
had nothing to do with it. Acclaim's financial woes are a result of a slew of
poor-selling games for PCs and consoles. The one game they've published for
the N64 so far (Turok) didn't contribute at all to Acclaim's debt - quite the
opposite in fact; the game was a great success.

We all know that if Nintendo didn`t have Shigeru Miyamoto as a games
designer, they`d still be producing playing cards. Shigeru Miyamoto is
one of the worlds greatest games designers and he (and his creations)
is the reason Nintendo is still a force to be reckoned with.

Again, quoted out of context. Why doesn`t that surprise me? What is so
inspiring about recycling old material? Mario, Starfox, Donkey Kong,
Mario Kart, etc. When do we get to see something NEW? Something that
actually makes use of the 64 bits under the hood?

Interesting "dotted" statement - most interesting for its
arrogant inaccuracy. I would suggest that you will find upwards of 200
programming staff at Kyoto, and that the development teams at Nintendo
are larger than you will find anywhere else in the gaming industry -
with the possible exception of Sega. The Mario 64 project employed 40
programmers - and a team of that size for one project is not dissimilar
to what you'll find on a major Microsoft product.

history of working with Nintendo that goes back to the late 1980s?
Possibly you are too young to know the history of Rare, and to have
followed them since they were called "Ultimate - Play The Game" and
had a close affinity with the Sinclair Spectrum in 1983. In the late
80s they completely disappeared from the European gaming scene,
following Tim Stamper's affection for the work coming from Japan...
No. It's the magazine which Miyamoto, Molyneaux, Hawkins etc. read and

Probably from hard work and dedication since Nintendo had to publicly
apologize to 3rd parties because their tech support was virtually
nonexistant a few months ago. They couldn't possibly take credit for the
3rd party lineups until next year after their cold shoulder during the
first generation software...

Yeah, Acclaim picked up most of their titles for the NES, and Rare only
really came into their own with DKC. I guess that's what comes from
working closely with Nintendo fo years.

So Edge is the UK version of Nintendo Power. I wonudn't trust anything
Hawkins says about video games; he hasn't had any big successes since EA.

His only success was EA, and I guess that was spectacular enough that people
think he's a genius. I guess that the 3DO is SO dead that people don't even
know about Trip's connection to that piece of work.

If you'd ever worked on a large software development, you would know

Read up on your Rare history, matey. The Stamper brothers who founded
the company have spoken highly of Nintendo for the last 14 years... Just
because they only started sharing resources recently is not the point.
The point is that the development paradigm which Rare aspire to was
almost wholly inspired by the work of one certain Japanese company.

That's what I like to call "deadware." Might be released, might be half as
good as the developers hoped, but probably won't. I'd put Mission: Impossible
and Ultra Descent (for the N64) in the same category. Blasto! might end up
there some day, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now...
Heh heh heh! Boy, I think we're all in for a thrashing... I got 2

It's not just on hold; it looks to be in serious trouble. Development was
going so poorly at Ocean that they handed the project over to their parent
company, Infogrames in France, for completion. The outlook is not good at
all, which is a shame, because M:I had enormous potential.

Daddy, why won't this magnet pick up this floppy disk?
Lots of games. Mario, Zelda, Starfox, name a classic Nintendo game,
there's a good chance it's from him. Many people worship him as a game
creating God, because his games always focus on gameplay and usually
tack on some style to boot. Lately he's been mostly revamping his old
classics for the N64, but they usually turn out cool too.

Uhh yeah...Dizzy was this little egg dude who starred in a cheesy game
series by Codemasters (the dudes who made Game Genie and Linus
Spacehead) and (as far as I can remember, I haven't played the games in
years) you go around jumping around and picking up objects and solving
puzzles and trying not to get killed and stuff.

Oh. Ok. I think I threw Dizzy at the local Cumberland Farms
(Convenience store for all of you that may not know).
He made a nice splat.

Can anybody confirm if Codemasters really was formerly known as Tengen?
If so, that might explain why Nintendo fought the Game Genie device so
heavily, whereas Sega was happy to license the product.
Tengen released several unlicensed games for the NES in the 80s with the
"Tengen Seal of Quality" stamped all over the game case and manual to
make up for it. I don't imagine the big N was too pleased about that.
On an unrelated note, I believe a sizable portion of those unlicensed
titles were Atari games.
I seem to remember that for several years, Nintendo refused to give
Atari a license to develop games for their systems (for what reason, I
have no idea). IIRC, Nintendo was eventually forced to quit being so
stubborn after a lengthy court battle. This is all just reciting from
memory, of course.

I don't know but I remember they (the Codemasters games like Linus
Spacehead and the Dizzy and Quattro games) were in funny shaped carts
(not like the normal Nintendo cart or even like the average Tengen
cart), and the Codemasters logo came up when you started it.

Codemasters has never had anything to do with Tengen. They are a
British company and are still quite alive and kicking (and making
games for the PSX out in Europe). They do not currently have an
American distributor.

Why is that? I already ran over Sonic and Crash Bandicoot with that very
same truck. Shouldn't we leave a witness to tell the bloody death of a
former system's mascot? :-)
