Hello gang, it's Anthony "Ace" Shubert back again with another installment
of Ace's Angles. First off, let me apologize about recent actions by myself
and my staff conscerning the "GMJ2" parody. It's over, time to move on.
I suppose we should feel important because no other magazine was parodied
THAT WELL, and yes, props to the people that did it. (For the record, I stand
6'3" and weigh 215 pounds... not a 'fat man.') But hey, you gotta take the
good with the bad, so..
AT ANY RATE, this holiday season is going to be a very wierd one. Sega is
just rolling out the 32X, and with a limited game library, it's not going to
be a large Christmas seller. Nintendo has Donkey Kong Country (of which I
have seen ZERO commercials..) but how much can one game do? Atari is having
production delays.. but getting Alian vs. Predator is a big help. So what
does this mean?
The 3DO machine has a big chance here - it's last. Samarai Shodown and
Super Street Fighter II Turbo, if done right, will sell systems. It's only
$300 now, so maybe it'll flourish.
Phillips' CD-i has been doing everything right lately. They've got a
style that is easily seen: Having a spokesman helps (Former SNL star Phil
Hartman). Burn Cycle looks to be a good game (review coming soon.) They have
some good programmers, they are spending the money on marketing.. now all they
need is that killer app.
The NEO-GEO machine will be boosted soon. The NeoCD and a recent
announcement that SNK will not allow any more translations of their games on
other systems. In other words, no SS2 on the Super NES.
So, here's the one and only chance for these 'niche market' machines.
American consumers will allow two (*maybe* three) machines. If it's not now,
it won't be ever.
Next issue, we'll look at the World Wide Web and it's effect on commercial
online services -- and GMJ/VGW's role in that effect. Cya next ish!

:: NINTENDO UNVEILS 'VIRTUAL BOY?' ::
TOKYO (AP) -- Nintendo Co. Ltd. invited fans Tuesday to abandon
2-D zapping and caroming in favor of its new 3-D ``virtual reality
system,'' which it says will dominate the next generation of video
games.
But game developers and fans were generally unimpressed by
``Virtual Boy,'' which Nintendo, the world's leading video game
company, introduced at a trade show Tuesday and plans to start
selling in April for $200.
``Virtual reality'' games strive to seal players into a private
world by having them press their faces against a viewer that blocks
out other light. Inside are two light-emitting displays,
essentially a screen for each eye, giving a 3-D effect.
There is also a small speaker for each ear for sound effects.
The toy's three-dimensional, high-resolution graphics, in shades
of red on a black background, make characters and other images seem
to jump out and fall back while moving through space.
Still, many of those attending the trade show were disappointed
that the system was not full-color and did not ``track'' -- the
industry term for images that follow a user's movements.
``It's not really good-looking yet,'' Hiroki Sasagawa, a
23-year-old game software developer, said after pulling away from
the view piece, mounted on a stand, and releasing the hand-held
control panel.
Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said the company opted for
monochrome because a full-color, 3-D system would have been
``unaffordable.''
``If that's the case, they should have waited and put it out
later. In a while, won't full-color get cheaper?'' Sasagawa asked.
True virtual-reality full-color systems -- in which users don
helmets and gloves that read their movements -- can cost $15,000.
Nintendo plans to release the battery-operated system in April
in Japan and the United States and says it will add two to three
software titles a month to the three it has now: Mario, ``Space
Pinball,'' and a boxing program.
Each software cartridge, about the size of a double-thick
saltine cracker, will cost from $50 to $70.
Virtual Boy is Nintendo's first 32-bit machine, with twice the
computer processing power as the 16-bit machines that dominate the
market.
:: Electronic Arts' stock rebounds ::
LOS ANGELES (Reuter) - Stock of Electronic Arts Inc. rallied Thursday, a day
after the entertainment software company announced second-quarter results at
the high end of expectations.
The San Mateo, Calif.-based company's stock rose $1.50 to close at $22.75 on
Nasdaq, where it was among the most active issues.
On Wednesday, Electronic Arts said profits fell to $6.7 million, or 14 cents
a share, in the quarter ended Sept. 30 from $8 million, or 16 cents a share, a
year earlier. Despite the drop, the results exceeded many analysts'
expectations, which ranged from 11 cents to 16 cents.
Revenues rose to $86.29 million from $82.09 million, thanks to strong sales
of CD-ROM games.
``The quality of earnings was very high,'' said Charlotte Walker of Bear
Stearns.
She maintained her buy rating on Electronic Arts' stock, saying the company
was the best positioned in the industry and its stock should trade at least
around $30.
She said she was cheered by the company's successful switch to CD-ROM games
from the mature cartridge and by upbeat comments of the company's conservative
management.
``All systems are go at Electronic Arts,'' said Charlie Finney of Volpe Welty,
adding that the company has strong momentum heading into the holiday season.
Electronic Arts said it released 26 new products during the quarter compared
with 21 last year.

This being hopefully the first of many "Counterpoint articles" I would
like to take into consideration Tony's review of the 32X and what could be
improved, or changed on the system. Let's get right to it. Okay, first, here
is a look at the specs once again:
CPU: Two Hitachi 32-bit RISC processors running at 23 MHZ.
Capable of 40 MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second)
Okay, 2 32 Bit processors. Well, ok, that's not bad.. but here's a
question for you. How can 32 bit processors run correctly WITHOUT running on a
32 bit bus?!? The Genesis was designed to be a 16 bit system, with the
capability to add on a CD-Rom device. I'll get back to this point later.
Co-processing: Genesis 68000 and a new VDP (Video Display Processor)
Okay, VDP.. What does it do? NOBODY knows.
Graphics: High-speed RISC processors and dual frame buffers allow rendering
of 50,000 polygons per second
50,000 polygons per second. Well, that's quite a few. Where's the
proof? Virtra Racing Deluxe? I'm sure that has 50,000 polygons per second. But
for the moment, let's assume that's correct. WHO USES POLYGONS ANYMORE? With
the CD-Rom attachment to the 32X, you shouldn't need polygons anymore. Sure
they are rendered fast, but who needs them anymore? After Starfox on the SNES,
what other SFX games came out? 2?!? However, the SNES games never did do the
following :
[*] texture mapping
If Sega did manage to pull of texture mapping of all 50,000
polygons per second, then bravo to them.
[*] hardware scaling and rotation
Okay, but then why have both the rendering of 50,000 polygons per second
if you just do it with the hardware for regular graphics?
Colors: 32,768 simultaneous colors of a palette of 16.8 million
Fine, 32k colors. Sounds like my current video card. Hmm.. just one
question. Can it do 32k colors, render 50,000 polygons, texture map all of
those polygons, and make a expresso all at the same time?!? I think not!
Memory: 4mbit RAM in addition to Genesis and Sega CD
4 Megabits. Nobody seems to realize how little this is. 4 Megabits is
equal to 1/2 a Megabyte. If Sega wanted something worthwhile memory wise, why
didn't they make it a full meg of video memory, and extra actual memory? My
Trident 32 Bit video card ran me 55 bux with a meg on board. Sheesh.
Video: Can overlay a plane of graphics over Genesis video
That's nice, but since it's called the 32X, and the games are designed
for 32X, why would you bother with the Genesis anymore?
Audio: Stereo digital audio with programmable sample rates
audio mixing with Genesis sound
Ok, that's nice. How many DAC (voice) channels? Or wait, are we gonna
be stuck with FM Synthesis sound again, JUST like the Genesis. If you compare
the sound of a Super Nintendo and the sound of a Genesis, I can almost ALWAYS
guarantee that the SNES will come out on top, very simply because it has 8 DAC
(Voice channels) compared to the Genesis's 2 (I THINK). The rest are FM
channels. The best comparison would be if you take a Sound Blaster sound card
and compare it to that of a Gravis Ultrasound. It's 20 FM channels to 32 REAL
SOUND channels.
Even though this article may sound like a put down to the 32X, it really
is just an informative article, and mostly purely opinionated toward the new
system. The 32X will be quite an enhancement toward the Genesis, but shelling
out $150 is not nickel and dime petty cash for some people. Here's my final
opinion : If you want the 32X, and have the cash, get it. Otherwise, wait
around for the 64 bit systems (Ultra 64 and Saturn, or maybe a Jaguar if the
games proposed to come out do), for if you go out and buy yourself a 32X now,
you will be left in the dust when the 64 bit giants come around. Also, be
patient. The Genesis and the SNES will not all of a sudden loose support
because the 32X came about. Both 64 bit systems are due out in '95 so don't
freak. I'm sure you can all survive that long.

Coming for the Sega Genesis are many, many titles that cover many genres --
even the oft-forgotten RPG (role-playing game).
Here they are, in alphabetical order:
The Adventures of Batman and Robin - This side-scroller is based on the
animated Fox program, and it shows. The fluid animation is a major highlight
of this title as you must restore peace in Gotham City. You'll go up against
Mr. Freeze, The Joker and Two-Face during your quest. Some new perspectives
are promised. One problem though, the sprites are so SMALL! Coming in January
for $60.
Desert Demolition Starring Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote - Fantastic graphics
and sound in this 'anything you can do I can do better' cart. You can play
either as the Road Runner or as "The Genius" Coyote, and each character has
different stages to play. Solve the puzzles (put the anvil here? Jump on this
lever there?), catch your foe and get the ACME stamps (or bird seed if you're
the Road Runner) to succeed. February for $50.
Ecco: The Tides of Time - Ecco is a 3-D water-filled world here. Once again,
great graphics accent this title. Morph into a seagull, shark and even a
jellyfish (It's morphin' time!) You are joined by Trellia, a dolphin from the
future, to battlethe evil Vortex. It's available now (with a great
commercial!) for $60.
NBA Action '95 - David Robinson stars in this cart that has a few new additions
to the standard basketball game. A "Fast-Breaking View" gives you more
realistic fast-breaks, Marv Albert provides color commentary ("Yes!") and it's
4-player adapter compatible. Coming in March for $65.
NFL '95 - Every team, every player, every game. Wow. You can trade players,
play in a full-season, see the ratings on each player's ability and more. The
screen scales a la Mode 7 to see up to 65 yards at once from behind the
quarterback... no passing windows - you don't need 'em! You can play as the
quarterback or the receiver - and run any pattern you like. FANTASTIC cart.
Releasing today (Touchdown Tuesday November 15) for $65. [Look for a full
review soon.]
NHL All-Star Hockey - It's Mario '95.. but since's he's taking the year off
reguardless of the strike... every player, every team again. Color by Marv
Albert here too. The early version we played looked pretty decent, crisp
graphics and okay play-control. FIGHTING IS IN THE GAME!! Coming in February
for $65. Who needs the pros? (Well, we do, but I digress.)
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium - We are in shock, but all good
things must come to an end. We've been waiting for a long time, wait no more
folks. The Bio-monsters have taken over Motavia again, and it's up to the
party to fix it. Restore peace to the Algol star system! PS4 will show some
new combat features including macros, so you don't have to select the same 4 or
5 or 6 buttons, one-button attacks! Also, spell-combining for devestating
effects (Hey, you Fireball and I'll MindMush. Hmm..), new vechicles and
monsters - some of which can morph during battle (Standard Power Rangers joke
here.) Coming in January for $100. No typo, one hundred dollars. Ouch.
Ristar - Sonic clone extraordinare, Ristar is the solar system's last hope
against a 'master villian' who's trying to brainwash the entire planet. New
powers include swinging around trees, banging against walls to launch youself
higher, and swinging on vines, trees and poles. Ristar is coming in February
for $50, but can I use Lock-On technology with that?
X-Men Clone Wars - Ignoring the oppertunity of "It's an X-Men Clone" joke, this
game seems very solid. Wolverine (who's starring in his own game right now by
Acclaim), Nightcrawler, Gambit and Cyclops are joined by Beast and Psylocke in
this one (aww, no Jean Grey/Phoenix/Dark Phoenix?) 12 different missions await
the X-Men, but who do you send on each one? Save the planet from a killer DNA
virus! Coming in January for $60.

Graphics: Sharp! Bright! really nice job, more animations, not any
more detailed than the first Fifa.
Control: Still a little shaky, with the computer still remembering button
presses. I.E. You are tring to steal the ball with _B_, the ball comes loose
you run to get it and your player kicks it out of bounds. HOWEVER,
a big improvement is players diving for ball when you don't want them to.
Often on Fifa '94, I'd be pressing _C_ to catch up with a long shot toward the
net, and would stand a good chance of catching it but my player would then
dive and miss it.
Sound: As good as the first, realistic crowd and game sounds. One improvement
is on goal celebrations. After you score while the player dances, throws his
hands up, whatever... _A_ will give you a shouting "GOAL", the longer you
hold _A_ the longer the "GOOOOOOOOAL". _B_ gives you loud drums, and _C_
will give you the sound of fireworks exploding.
Game play: Excellent... the kick it back and forth gameplay of '94, has given
way to a planned offensive attack, tring to make good passes to split the D.
As mentioned in another review the goalies still kind of suck on long shots,
but it does go both ways, for you and against you. Headers and trapping the
ball are big parts of the game, where in '94 the computer always knew where to
be to head a ball, and you couldn't find _the spot_, headers now occour more
and it adds to the game. One complaint is that on throw ins and goal kicks, 2
guys will be in position to recieve it but sometimes you cannot see one of the
guys as the players will be on top of each other, (so far v. the CPU, it
always seem to be my guy who I can't see). Overall headers are improved, heck
I even headed one in!
PENALTY KICK SHOOTOUTS!!!!!! There should have been an option to play one of
these and not have to tie a two minute game just to get to kicks, but they
are in the game and A LOT OF FUN!
Kevin - 95
Where the original was a 90... If EA was smart they'd call Extended Play

Sonic & Knuckles is the latest installment in the ever-growing Sonic the
Hedgehog series from Sega. This time around, there's a new character for
players to choose. He's called Knuckles the Echidna, and he can do things that
Sonic and Tails can't, like climb walls, glide through the air, and bash
through seemingly unbreakable obstacles. The game has up to 8 zones, depending
on which character you play, and on whether you get all the emeralds or not.
But the best feature of Sonic & Knuckles, and the one that truly makes this
game a gem, is the game's incredible Lock-On technology (more on that later).
The graphics in Sonic & Knuckles are gorgeous, and like the other Sonic
games, improve upon the previous installment. The color limitations of the
Genesis aren't noticable here, and there are some excellent special effects
like perspective change and screen rotation.
The game's music ranges from good to to superb, and each tune fits its
level/battle very well. However the sound effects were slightly disappointing,
in that they are the same exact ones found in the previous Sonic games.
One thing you will notice fairly soon when playing S&K is that the levels
are huge. The are many different pathways to take, and it is not difficult
to get lost and end up further back than you were before! A few of the levels
can get a little tedious, but the majority of them keep things exciting enough
to keep you coming back for more. There are also 3 different types of bonus
stages in which one can earn items, continues, or the elusive Chaos Emeralds.
Gameplay, although familiar to many gamers by now, is good, and the controls
are quick and precise. Playing as Knuckles adds new dimensions to the game, and
is a nice change of pace. Even more gameplay options are obtained through
S&K's Lock-On feature, that allows you to use the game with other Sega carts.
Sonic & Knuckles can be locked-on with Sonic 3 to grant players new options
like being able to use the game save feature in S&K, playing as Tails in S&K,
and best of all, new areas to explore in the original Sonic 3 game. You can
also hook the game up with Sonic 2 and play through it as Knuckles.
And there's more. Hook S&K up to Sonic 1, press buttons A-B-C at the same
time, and you enter a games made entirely of 3-D bonus stages. The game has
over 300(!) different stages, and even has a password feature. Still not
enough? Lock on S&K with most of Sega's (not 3rd party) other games,
press A-B-C simultaneously, and you play a 3-D stage specific to that game.
Sonic & Knuckles has tremendous replay value. Playing the S&K game through
Sonic 3 gives the game 2 endings for each character, for a total of 6 different
endings (by itself the game has 4, since Tails cannot be used). Besides having
an abundance of secret rooms and items to find, there is also the ability to
become a Super or even Hyper version of your character by gathering all
the Emeralds. Even Tails gets an emerald character this time around!
I find myself rating this game rather high not because of the excellent
play, graphics and sound (all the Sonic games exhibit these features), but
because of the many different play options that will keep things fresh for a
long period of time, as well as breathe some life into older games. I'd
reccomend it to anyone who enjoys a good action/platform game, especially if
you own the previous Sonic titles.
Ace - 95
Fantastic game!! The world's worst kept secret is finally out, you can now play
as Knuckles. Fantastic! New levels, new powerups.. it's a worthy sequel to
Sonic 3. But - what's the next game called? Sonic 4?

The Jamie is our award of excellance in videogames. Many are given by our
editors, and many are given by you, the readers. This will be posted as a
stand-alone post, also. To reply, please send email to us at shu...@usc.edu
and make the subject line [GMJ] awards.nominees
UNTIL DECEMBER 15, we are accepting nominations for the following categories.
When GMJ 62 comes out (on December 15 or so) we will have the final voting
ballots. The final vote will be tallied on January 5 and the awards will be
given out at the Winter CES '95 at a ceremony January 7.
For every vote and nomination received by us will be worth more than a vote -
it will help disaster relief. We'll donate 25 cents for every vote (that is,
for each person voting. Limit one donation per email address - we aren't THAT
rich!) to the American Red Cross.
So, without any further delay.. here are the categories for this year's
