OK, I'll go with that.

>Video Worse: Castlevaina - NES

OK, OK...here I need some explaination. Why in the world do you consider
Castlevania to be the worst of the games of that year? (Note: this is NOT A
FLAME) I consider it to be one of the all time GREATEST NES games ever! I
liked the fact that you used a whip instead of a sword or gun, and the
controls were very tight. The graphics and the music were some of the most
memorable on the NES ever. Also, I don't think it was released until 1987,
but I could be wrong.

>1987

>Video Worse: Double Dragon - SMS

Should've checked out the NES version. It was excellent.

>
>1988

>Video Worse: Some sort of platform game in the swamp - NES

Wouldn't happen to be the Adventures of Bayou Billy would it? That game was
too hard for it's own good.

Isn't that another one of Compile's shooters?

>1991

Who can deny that? Nintendo was down for the count.

I still liked the SNES version better. Besides, my vote would have been for
Final Fantasy 2.

>1993

>Video Best: Star Fox - SNES

Not much argument here.

>Video Worse: Fzero - SNES

Again, why? It was one of the best of the early SNES games, IMO. And it was
released in 1991, not 1993.

>1994

>Video Best: Super Metroid

Ah, my personal bias showing up again. My vote is for Final Fantasy 3. DKC
wasn't too bad either.

>Video Worse: Wolf 3D - SNES

This isn't too suprising, from what I hear they really butchered it.

>

Good music, but can't say much for the hardware...
I'd say VF2 or Chrono Trigger.

>Possible 1996

>Video Best: Defender 2000 - Jaguar

My vote: Dragon Warrior 5 (I know, I'm still holding my breath)

>Video Worse: Caddon Fodder - Jaguar

A lot of Jaguar games could go in this category.

Agreed. Castlevania made me buy my NES.

: >Video Worse: Double Dragon - SMS

: Should've checked out the NES version. It was excellent.

Totally disagree on both counts. The NES version sucked eggs. It
didn't follow the arcade, you couldn't play with a friend and you had to
"earn" your moves. It flickered like a banshee too. I like the 7800 and
SMS versions way, waaaaayyyyy better.

: >Video Worse: Wolf 3D - SNES

: This isn't too suprising, from what I hear they really butchered it.

You put it against the Jaguar version and you really see that the
Jag isn't some "16-bit console"

: Good music, but can't say much for the hardware...

Also about a year and a half late. T2000 came out in spring of
1994, not 1995.

: >Video Worse: Caddon Fodder - Jaguar

Cannon Fodder sucks? Come on ... that's got to be one of the most
addictive games around. It also got some wicked reviews in just about
every single mag.

You're nuts, man. You had a lousy VIC-20 and missed out on some of the
greatest games. Archon, Destruction Derby, Dandy, Ultima. And Sim City,
Civilization, and X-Wing didn't make your list? This isn't a list of the
best and worst games *ever*. It's a list of the best and worst games that
you managed to play on your crappy hardware.

Thanks for the compliment, but I cannot take credit for it. I
believe someone else used it in "Compute!" a couple of years back. It's
kind of stuck with me, especially when describing NES games.

I have to agree with you also. Castlevania WAS the best SNES game I
have ever palyed...in fact it was the game that made me buy an SNES (I
didn't like SMB). It was original back then. I mean, how many games
were there back then that let's you control a whip-wielding guy out to
slay a bunch of zombies, bats, and other mythical-creatures? This game
is SUPERB. I can't wait for it to come out for the Saturn and PSX.

Bah. Gimme a break here. Atari 800XL came out about this time, didn't
it? I'm not going to start any Commodore vs. Atari fight here though. I
just feel that it is a very good computer: easy to program, good games, etc.

This was a good one, probably his best other than the Fun House one.

Agree. Sonic 1 and 2 are both quality games, and mainly the reason that
a Sega Genesis was our first 16-bit system. Too bad the later Sonics
sucked so badly.

Agreed. Epic Pinball wasn't bad, I've just never cared very much
for the feel of them. Somthing just seems off.

Agreed. I had a lot of fun with it. But I would definately put
X-Com up at the top. Just recently started playing, and it's addictive
as hell.

Nope. I rather enjoyed SimTower for a while. I'm sure there's

DN3D held my interest for a couple days. That was it. There
needs to be something really new done to that genre before anything can
really be fun again.

I also find it hard to believe the C64 (one of the most popular computer
formats of the mid-80's) isnt here anywhere.

MULE, Bump n' Jump, the Summer games series, the Beach-Head series, Tapper,
1942 and Commando all had EXCELLENT versions on the C64. You had that or
the Atari XL series, you had games covered for about 4 years.

Coleco Adam? YECCCH! Most of 'em broke down after a month....

Never played the PC version, but I know I *HATED* the NES version... It
used to really piss me off when cool arcade games got "nintendo-ized"...
examples: rygar, double dragon, section z, strider, robocop...

Agreed. I still remember that speech synthesis at the beginning. :-)

It was slower, it was chopped up and the graphics weren't as
good. The Jaguar version destroys it.

HI all,

Amusing subject.. here are my votes:

Best Game: Streets of Rage 2 (Genny,.. though SFa comes close)

Worst Game: Sword of Sodan (Genny)

Though it's kinda close since almost all of EA's
non-sports games blow dead rats.

It's an incredibly bad game, but at least it has nice graphics. On
the other hand, Dark Castle is arguably the worst game for the Genesis
ever. Shitty graphcs, lousy control, annoying sound effects from

Best Game: Command and Conqueor (Westood)

Best Shareware Demo :Duke Nukem3D (3D Realms)

Worst Game: Command:Aces for the Deep (Sierra)

Turkey of the Decade: Encounters (Gametek)

Wait of the Decade: Grand Prix 2 (Microprose)/Quake (ID)

Aces, is so crap its sad, I hope its not the shape of Windows 95 games to

Hmm, IMO SNES Castlevania: Dracula X was the most horrid NES/SNES
Castlevania game of all time.

Horrid control. Dull. Some sections annoyingly difficult while
others annoyingly easy. Although a decent chunk of the difficulty
was the annoying controls. BTW: The SNES pad has more than three
buttons, so why not put "special activation" under it's own button,
instead of "up and attack." It didn't really use the controller,
nor even consider the controller, as the previous sentence shows.
It was graphically not that special. The options for controller
set-ups were weak. And putting up with the title screen appearance
and sound file was extremely annoying, particularly if you did
want to change the controls. Most of what the game did was done just
as well or better in NES Castlevania or Castlevania 3.

Phelios wasn't bad. The Namco shooter seemed similar to many other
shooters. Not my favorite type of game but still I didn't see any
reason why it would be included in a "worst games" category. Flicky
also was a tremendously fun game, especially since it was only $20
when it first came out.

Not that these games would be considered classics, so I don't know why
they're really being talked about here. Although I would consider
Fatal Labrynth a classic since it was basically a port of Rogue or
Hack, games that were around for many years on unix machines, and then
later on PC/Amiga.

You are either nuts, or never played the game. Sure Flicky
brings 8-bit splendour to the Genesis, but the game is pure fun to
play. I originally bought it as a markdown for $10, and it's worth
much more than that ...would I have paid more for it, well, ummm... =^)
I can honestly say I've had more fun with this game than some of
those titles I've spent much more on (Quackshot, Fatal Rewind, Hellfire,
Chameleon Kid, Mamono Hunter Yoko...)
Or maybe it's just what I look for in a game...I read this
message in rgv.classic... plain fun, button-twiddling-bliss, not
necessarlily looking for the "THE END" message after the credits.

And Phelios wasn't bad, I do recall the voice being a bit
garbled, but for it's time it was one of the better shooters.

In fact, it WAS "Fist of North Star" (well, an "adaptation" of one
anyway). And in the grand tradition of nearly all FoNS games, it sucked
rocks.
Wish they would make a remake of Kung Fu with improved sound,
graphics, and perhaps some SF2-esque special moves. Kung Fu was simple but
just so much mindless fun IMHO. Maybe I should try doing a remake, it's
not to hard to program...

Too bad the current incarnation of Infocom has nothing at all in common
with classic Infocom. I'm still trying to get over that Return to Zork
pile of crap. A point-and-click interface on a game with "Zork" in the
title? Puhleeeze! Now we get revolutionary 3-D technology. Could we
get *any* farther away from the Blank/Lebling classic?

Fans of the REAL Infocom (not this shabby imitation pod-person Infocom)
will be happy to know the guttering torch has been picked up by a whole
new generation of writers. Honest-to-god *writers*; no bloody graphics,
no bloody point-and-click, no bloody sound, no bloody catering to

you're up to the challenge of actually thinking and <shudder> reading.

Well, there's been an awful lot of bad stuff, like most everything for the
Jaguar, but my vote for the worst out there right now has got to go to
Accolade's Speed Racer for the Super NES: that game brought back memories all
right--only they were of the 8-bit system (which is the same reason I bust on
Atari's "64-bit" efforts). Another wasted license. Even if Blockbuster had
let me keep it, I would've felt ripped off.

thanks for that ftp info, i will hit there soon after. I did always
like the freedom that text game gave your imagination. I can honestly
say i solved a good portion of the original infocom titles the brute
force way, by solving them. I admit that i sometimes needed help on
the harder titles but solving those problems is a very satisfying
experience. I disagree with your problems with Return to Zork. I did
not expect it to have the quality of the original Infocom Authors such
as Meretsky???? i used to know all their names. whats happened to
these guys? are they still alive? probably grads from MIT now and
making buku dinero somewhere else. anyway, the thing about return to
zork is that it took the classic zork mood, (at least in the
packaging) and put together a not so spectacular set of puzzle and
some 3d scrolling. I loved it when i first tried it tho because it
was zork and it was puzzles, plus a new interface and real video and
animation. so i accepted it as a zork title and played it. id say
under a killing moon was better but what the hell . i will buy the new
one the day it comes out...

Sorry Atari guys.....In my book Atari kicks royal ass, even if their
best work has been in coinop. I still want to see home emulators for
all those excellent atari coinops from the 80s!

There's nothing like the old Infocoms on my Commodore 64.. I remember how
excited I was after beating Zork 1-3 ... To date, there isnt a system
with graphics that can compare to what I saw in my mind when I played

All the infocoms were excellent..

I have to agree with you on the Home Alone games. They are so void of any
real game play and graphics, they remind me of the earliest 8 bit
nintendo games and I expected much more from a game for Snes.

Silpheed was one of the best games on the old Apple IIGS... I can remember
watching that wireframe intro OVER AND OVER and just going "Whoa..."

As I seem to recall, the music ruled as well. There was a Mega CD version,
which was good, but it just was lacking somewhere... but there were these
british voices in the background saying stuff like "Oh no, look out captain"
and swearing a lot...

Actually I was impressed by it when I played it. Nothing will ever
compare to the original text Zorks, but this certainly is a better game
then Return to Zork.

I think these games are produced by Activision under the name Infocom, I had
heard that Act bought them out or some other business deal along those lines.
At any rate, whatever company did it, the ORIGINAL text adventures of
Infocom were published again as two seperate packages, titled Lost Treasures
of Infocom. Yes, in text form, except for a few games which Infocom had
spiced up with graphics. Volume I had ALL the Zorks, and most of the good
Infocom stuff. Volume II had a few interesting ones, but mostly ones I've
never played, so I never looked into it. These were all produced about a
year back, so they may be hard to find, but there should be some still
around.

Also, does this thread belong here? rgv SEGA people :) Then again, I haven't
read all these posts, so don't flame me. I could guess that this thread
means a Saturn version, but so far I've only seen advance orders for PCs.

Bruce Lee on the Commodore 64 Kicked mega butt! When you had player 2 join in
as the Green Sumo guy....Hours and hours of Fun ensured! :)

One of my faves.

Other classics were BallBlazer, Archon, Marble Madness and this one floppy I
had that included all the old classics like Donkey Kong, Congo Bongo, Buck
Rodgers, Dig Dug ETC.

Yeah! Rock on! I actually got somewhere on that game when I got it for a
PC C-64 emulator. =)

My vote for worst game has to go to "Star Voyager" by Acclaim for the
NES. My GOD that was *the* most boring game I have *ever* played in my life.

Ballblazer rocks! That's a great two-player game. It was a good game to
play against the computer for awhile. Once I figured out how to
intercept the ball before the computer did (it took a few games to figure
that out), the computer is easy to defeat on the hardest level. I wish I
could find someone to play against. The computer is boring now, but I
sometimes watch it play itself (a good way to place bets :)).

I read in the UK press that they dug them back up in the mid to late 80`s and sold them
with 2600 systems in former Eastern Block countries when the Iron curtain started to crack
