I second this question! I have emailed N64.com with the same question - no
response. I have read in other msgs that it has something to do with a
speed burst but it did not include info about how or when or how many....

If N64.com ever responds, I will post the answer here.

They make you go faster. The more you have, the faster you go. Well that
is what all the reviews are saying (Nintendo Power)

I think they're like coins in the original Mario Kart, where they represent your
endurance and top speed. The manual is very vague and sparse.

I think the answer to this question is on the reference card that comes
with the game, but I could be wrong. Anyway,, yes, they are used to
make you go faster, or they increase your top speed to be more correct.
Once a player collects ten, I don't know if this includes the CPU
characters, the other characters are locked out of acquiring more speed
from the bananas that they collect. But, you can lose your bananas if
you are hit at a rate of two per hit. If you get enough, believe me,
you'll notice the speed increase.

Thanks! This made a HUGE difference in the trophy races!

It makes you go faster, its on the Reference Card

"The grueling flamewar ended with the victory of, Troy Davis, you win!"
To ponder you defeating me is comical! Ho ho ho!

once you get ten bananas you increase your top speed and its not written in
the manual its on the back of the buttons sheet.
