Well, I had to ask what people thought of certain games'
music. In some cases, music can greatly affect the feel of a game. I
thought it would be nice to see what the populace liked. Well, I will
start with arcade games:

Best Theme/Songs in Arcade Games:

1) M. Bison ( SF2 ) - When I first heard them bells open up the theme
and Bison take off his cape, I was like "DAMN!". When M. Bison
scissor kicked me into oblivion, I was like "GOD DAMN!" :) It's a
shame that they seemed to alter the original theme in later versions
of SF. :/ The original one was the best one IMHO.

2) Krauser ( FF2 ) - The orchestra was a bit much, but completely made
the scene. Just like Bison's theme, I would always find myself
humming it when I beat the final boss. Of course, having the camera
angel swoop down to the fighters while Krauser proclaimed, "I will
chisel your gravestone; sleep well!" was also an adrenaline rush when
you got to him for the first time. :)

3) Pai ( VF ) - I thought that this song was the bomb when I first
heard it. Sometimes, I play vf just to fight Pai and enjoy the music
when I fight CPU Pai.

Best Theme/Songs in Home Games

1) Super Castlevania IV ( Konami/SNES ) - For anyone who has played
this classic, when you have to jump across those chandeliers ( Stage 6
I believe ), that theme music is the absolutely best song I have ever
heard on a SNES IMHO. I could listen to that for hours in my crib
especially the opening part...

2) Final Fantasy III ( Square Soft/SNES ) - There are a few from this
that were really good, but my favorite had to be when you fought a
"mid-boss". Even as I frantically preventing preventing my team from
getting its collective butt whipped, I would somehow find myself
humming the tune.

3) Phantasy Star 2 ( Sega/Genesis ) - There is a mesmerizing dungeon
theme that is slow, laid back, and simply a pleasure to listen to in a
dungeon. It never seemed to get repetitive even though it was a short
repeated theme. This theme was the theme used in later dungeons. I
forgot for what dungeons precisely though.

Well, that is my $.02. I have left a lot of songs out that I
wanted to include. This is just the tip of the iceberg. :)

It has to Robo's Theme from Chrono Trigger!! That is so cool. Heck, all
the music from CT is great! I would like to pick the soundtrack actually.
Anybody have it, that would sell it? Otherwise I'll have to get it imported!!
Why didn't Square release it like they did for FF3 and SoM?
ANyway that is my choice. I have to get that soundtrack!!

Now there can be no doubt in my mind that this has to be Tempest
2000. An incredible techno soundtrack that just adds to the pure speed
of the game!

Though I've heard the theme song from Shadow of the Beast II in a
mod file, and that was pretty damn awesome also.

Some of the best IMHO are:

The stage 8 music from Streets of Rage. Yuzo Koshiro at his best.

The stage 1&3 music from Ninja Warriors Again for SNES. BTW this was a
hugely underrated game IMHO.

Stage 8 and Boss 5 music from Thunderforce 4.

The ending theme to Forgotten Worlds. Still one of the catchiest tunes ever.

Also the ending theme to Street Fighter 2.

Well there's lots more but those were just some from the top of my head..

I loved the music in Space Harrier. Does anyone know where
I can get the CD? I know it's old (it's out on a SEGA soundtrack
compilation CD from 1986) but someone's GUTTA have it.
Thunderblade had a pretty nifty score too...and Double Dragon.
Oh....and Out Run.

Personally, in the ARCADE, I loved the stage select music from VF1... and
Sabrewulf's music in Killer Instinct. (Could hear an Ensoniq TS-12 going
through most of the KI music...) As far as PC games go, The 7th Guest music
is my current favorite. I was also really fond of the music in the NES Ninja
Gaiden I and II. :) So sue me. :)

I would have to say the soundtrack from Tempest 2000. I am not that much
of a rave fan; but it greatly adds to the feel of the game. The game has
such a fast pace, that the music helps the player focus on the game. I
have been playing this game for over a year and a half now; and one game
will now take me about two hours to play. The music, along with spinning
around the web is almost hypnotic.

has anyone played super monaco gp for the genesis? all the songs on there
ROCK! i can still hum the tunes today. cool music. the best one on the
tracks is called "the heat waves", i believe. wish there was a cd for this.
another cool theme music is the ending music for sagat on ssf2. has a
"dominating" feel to it.

My favorite video game music......

Sodom's theme from SFA
1st level of arcade Legendary Wings
"Harrier theme" from Genesis Space Harrier II
Theme to Subway level in arcade/SNES Final Fight
The 1st stage song in arcade Contra
The 2nd stage song in arcade Double Dragon II

Best sound effects -

The background effects when it says "(Fighter's name) Wins......Fatality" in
MK2. I like the sound that accompanies the "(Fighter) Wins" message
especially.
The death scream from Time Soldiers.
The tractor beam in Gaplus/Galaga III
The "juggling" aliens sound from Galaga III bonus stage
The "game over" theme to Gaplus/Galaga III
"GET OVER HERRRRRRRRRRE!!!!!!!!!!!" (Self explanatory)
Charlie from SFA's "Sonic boom" voice
Sagat's new SFA voice
When the announcer says "Nightwolf" in MK3
Pac-Man's "Wah-wah-wah-wah" sounds when he climbs a rope in SNES Pac-Man 2
The skull's laugh in arcade Cabal
The "winning screen" theme in Time Killers

Ah, the music thread again. For the arcade:

1) SF2 (Classic and Super) - Ryu and M. Bison.

2) SFA - Dan, Sodom, Ken, and Chun Li.

3) VF2 - Pai and Lion.

4) Power Drift - Any race circuit.

And for the home systems:

1) Contra (Nintendo) - All the stages, especially the secret base stages
and the energy zone.

2) DKC (SNES) - Any stage. Excellent music for a 16-bit system.

Another list:

1.) Demitri's stage music in DS. No contest. Any music which combines
the best aspects of hip-hop (amazing rythmns) and classical romantic
(the melodies) is good to begin with, and the theme is masterfully done.

2.) Bishamon's stage music in DS. Again, brilliance. Like Demitri's
but change the European style to Japanese (odd semitone changes,
ill-timed yet perfectly timed drumbeats).

3.) Sasquatch's music in DS. I like it. It's fun. :)

4.) Galford's music in SS. (Not SS2.)

5.) Shun's music in VF2. Nifty.

Does any body remember the arade game PYROS? This one is pretty old but
it's one of my all time favourites! The sound and music in this were
light years ahead of anything else at the time IMHO! I still remember
about half the songs. The best one had to be when ever you fight the
dragon at the end of every stage! Very panicky. Id say that this game has
the best music Ive ever heard still(except for maybe FF2 and 3)!

Best sound effects

The sounds in MK1 and 2, whenever it said someone has won, and right
before a fatality.

And especially when ever a bone breaks in Tekken1 and 2! Painfull!

My #1 favorite background music belonged to T.Hawk on SSF2. Heck, I
even brought a tape recorder and just let that stage play on while I
recorded the music.

Others worth mentioning:
Blood Brothers (old western shooter game)
Chief Thunder on KI (I see a pattern so far...:-), and that includes
when the music got faster near the end
Bishamon on Dark Stalkers
L. Raptor on DS

As far as the themes go, I'd have to say KI.

I'd agree that most of the tunes listed here, the ones i've heard anyway are
Most excellent ... until i heard the soundtrack from RAVE RACER...
the "next up" racing game from namco.. kind of like ridge racer II i guess...
This game has the best SOUNDS I have ever heard... (and i thought KI was
good...) better yet.. you can select the music you want to play as you drive..

(just tap the gear shift up or down whilst selecting your transmission type to
choose anything from the 1st "cd", do the same with the brake held down to
choose from the "2nd")

The tunes in particular i'm referring to are "3*EXXNOTE" by sandog ( you'll
know it when you hear it )

And "HEART OF HEARTS" by aya... for the first time in arcade history..
the've finally given a racing game a JUNGLIST SOUNDTRACK!!!!!!

*leaps for joy!*
THERE IS A GOD!!!!
*GRIN*

to tell the truth when i first saw the game i was mildly impressed... but when
i heard those tunes... what can i say... been practically playing non stop =)

Anyone know if there's a CD out for this????

If you dont believe me check it out for yourself =)

I'd say hands down the music in the first Amiga "Shadow of
The Beast" was the coolest stuff ever to come out of my computer
speakers. (Shadow of the Beast? Say, wasn't that Psygnosis release?)
This would be followed _very_ closely by "Into the Wonderful" from
GODS (Amiga), "MEGABLAST" by Bomb the Bass from Xenon2: MegaBlast (Bitmap
Brothers game for the Amiga) and all the John Williams conversions in
the Super Star Wars/Empire/Etc SNES carts.
Honorable mention goes to "Jurrasic Park" SNES, which actually
loaded NEW SAMPLES into the SNES sound RAM for each new song! Nothing
beats 8-voices of 16-bit BRR sample playback...

SONG I'D LIKE THE SCRATCH OFF THE CD: "Rotterdam Nation" from
Ridge "Hey There's A Really Stupid Announcer Right On Your Tail"
Racer (NAMCO).

I'd have to say the entire soundtrack to Lunar:TSS, and the regular
battle music, and all the boss battle music (I've heard thus far), as
well as Lucia's songs for Lunar:EB.

My votes:

Golbez from FF2 on the SNES. It just sounded so evil! I loved that one
with the menacing organ music. Also the music when Golbez says to Kain,
"Things are getting interesting, don't you think, Kain?"

FF2's Fabul too. And Toroia. Tower of Bab-il. Well, just about
everything!

This is kind of old, but I loved the remixed version of the Temple of
Fiends in the first Final Fantasy. There was one style when you first
entered, and another when you went down to the lower levels to fight
Chaos... there's a FF Symphonic Suite CD with this in it (Scene V).
Awesome... Matoya's cave is good too; better in FF-SS Scene 3.

From Final Fantasy 3:
The opening, when the Magitek riders are walking thru the snow.
Really haunting and cool.
Shadow's theme at the end of the game. "Baram... I'm going to stop
running..."
All the opera music, especially when you fight the rats while the
opera goes on...
The three-tiered final boss - with the organ and chorus in the
background. I don't know how I managed to get that one in my head, with
all the quick thinking I was doing in that fight...

Really all the music from the FF series, especially Final Fantasy 3.
Everything from SNES Star Wars too.

From fighting games... Charlotte's stage from SS; also Neinhalt Sieger
in SS2. Both excellent. Sabrewulf's stage in KI isn't half bad, though
I haven't heard all the tunes from that game. Vega's stage in SFII. KOF
'95 in general.

And one last one: Big Blue from F-Zero. I don't know why this one
sticks in my head; it just does. :)

Without a doubt it would have to be the opening theme song of KOF 94!

I love it when you see the spinning invitation and you hear voices in
the background yelling KILL 'EM!! And all of a sudden Kyo's hand rises
up and fries the letter with an explosive guitar intro for all the

Some of my favorite music:

Killer Instinct:
Jago - Quite good; it's a take-off from the standard music you hear
in many dance clubs these days - the same for Orchid.

Riptor - That's some cool music IMO! Very mysterious and having
elements that reminds me of the dinosaur era.

Spinal - Also quite good; very chromatic which stresses excite-
ment, fear, etc.. Uh, don't try to dance to this one. :)

Fulgore - Cool beginning, but I have a tough time hearing the
rest of it since the sound effects of the characters are quite
loud on the machine here.

Combo - Also very good; it has a hip-hop/disco/rap approach; I
really like the bass line in it.

Glacius - Not too big on this one; it's OK, but it doesn't excite
me very much.

Sabrewulf - Very cool; it has the Gothic-cathedral sound to it by
using the pipe-organ sound and how it's composed; reminds me of
Count Dracula.

Chief Thunder - It's OK, but I feel the same about this as I do
with Glacius.

Cinder - I can't remember his music right now. I'll get back on
this one. *GRIN*

Mortal Kombat II:
The Growling Tree Stage - I really like that music, especially
with the flute in it.

I like most of the music in this game.

Street Fighter II:
All the characters' music are very identical in style - lively,
moderate in tempo, etc.. The ones I especially like are Zangief,
Ryu, Ken, Guile, Bison, and Chun Li. I was very disappointed
what Capcom did to the music in Super Street Fighter. And what's
up with that voice on it?! Sheese!

There are many more I can add, but I'll post those at a later date. This
one is already long. :) Cheers!!

SoR has really good music, but Revenge of Shinobi has simply _excellent_

music all throughout. One of the best soundtracks for a Genny game out
there, easily.

Other good tunes (arcade and console)

Herzog Zwei -- Sort of a synth-y, techno-y feel to the music. Really
good. Enhances the war like feel to the game a great deal.

Sonic 1 and Sonic CD -- Sonic one had nice tunes. Obviously upbeat and
all, but still really good. The music fit well with the game and was
good by itself. Same with Sonic CD. The past music was a little..um..
unusual, but overall very well composed.

SF2 (arcade) -- Ken's stage. My character, my stage, my tune. Also like
the intro tune to the game (that plays during the demo)

Castlevania IV (the snes chandalier one) -- Excellent soundtrack. Great
soundeffects. This game wouldn't have been as good without the
soundtrack. Dark, eerie; the soundtrack defines the game's atmosphere.

Hmm, can't seem to think up anymore of the top of my head. I'll work on
it though.

I definately think the MegaMan X series had some cool music, I especcially liked that Eagle stage..

The tunes in Chrono Trigger are really upbeat(I liked to visit that Kiliwala Pianist and have him play the bike race theme...)except for one thing...I don't like that theme they have whenever someone's sad or when you select Marle(It's not horrible, just it's kinda annoying..)

FF3 had THE ULTIMATE in orchestrated music.......I was humming the Veldt theme for weeks....

also, some of the recent sonic games (Sonic CD and Chaotix) have pretty good music(one of the few things Chaotix had going for it...)

I liked Sonic 2 (Sonic & Tails) much better. "Chemical Plant Zone" and

The M. Bison stage is the one most people remember. That and the menu music.

I also recommend the dungeon themes in Landstalker. The main one, with the

Best video game music?

On the SNES, it would have to be Secret of Mana or Final Fantasy III.
Donkey Kong Country had a great soundtrack as well.

On the Genesis, it would be the soundtrack from Alitia Dragoon (the best

On the Playstation, I really like Ridge Racer's music. And some of the

The best video game music I've ever heard is that from Star Fox for the
SNES, especially that played during course 3, stage 1. That piece always
gets me pumped up.

Also, I love the music that Actraiser (again, for the SNES) plays while
you're in the pyramid on your way to fight the King Tut-like boss (can't
remember his name in the game). When I hear that music, I could swear
I'm really inside a huge, cavernous place. I can (practically) even feel

In the arcade, I love the music for the Jurassic Park pinball game.
Although most, if not all, of that music was taken from the movie, so I'm
not sure it counts as "video game music".

Actually, I found a lot of the themes like that. I like the music
even though it's obviously syntesized. I especially like the track
"Death Place".

Yeeeeesssss!!!! This is probably the best music ever for a video game. Streets
of Rage 2 was great too. SOR3's music was hyped up around the time of release
but it fell way short compared to these two.

By the way, does anyone know where I could get my hands on an import CD of

2. Castlevania III - All the tracks on this game are great, but level

Since I don't do arcades, I have about a few thousand votes
for myself. You can Email for more info on the rest:

*Vice;Project Doom (NES) An underrated game with an underrated sound-
track. After hearing the smooth Miami Vice themes, I thought, "Gamepro
called this music ALMOST catchy!" Humph and double humph.

*Mega Man 2 (NES) The music in the Dr. Wily stage was incredible. It's
what got me started on the recording video game music thing I still do
now.

*The Wolfgang Krauser msuic in FF2 is a real song, ya know. I've heard
the lyrics a zillion times, and i still can't get it out of my head.

*Mega Man X (SNES) H*ell of a lot better than the sequel, the music in
this cart in the best I've ever heard in a non-CD game. The music in
that intro stage is incredible, if a bit short (like too many good
tunes).

*TMNT: FAll of the Foot Clan (Game Boy) Here's a classic with great
stereo sound for a game boy. Love that sewer music, though.

*Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) Just to be fair to Gennies out there,
Sonic's themes are cool too.

*Final
Fantasy II (SNES) Funkier than 3, not as clean, though. The traveling
music is fantastic. And Fabul's music....

*SpiderMan & the X-Men (SNES) every sucker I know who's played this
game -- even little kids -- love the awesome soundtrack. Rent it
just to hear it.

More on:
Super Castlevania IV
Plok
Rock n' roll Racing
Battletaods in Battlemaniacs
Alien3
Super Ghould n' ghosts
Secret of Mana
FIFA Soccer

and more later by Email....

YES! I mentioned Sonic 2 last time this thread went around. The music is
just unbelievable, especially the Mystic Cave stage and the music during the
cinematic after you win, with bonus points going to the medley of songs from
the game while the credits roll. Sonic 3 was "sonically" a major downgrade,
IMO.

For the SNES I'd have to say Castelvania IV.

For the Genesis I'd say Sonic 2 was the best (anybody agree with me?,

SOR2 is a close second.

As for the Playstation and Saturn that's still to be decided, maybe
after they've been out for longer I could decide.

Yeah, Sonic and Sonic 2 did have some great tracks. And I loved it when
you won and you go to hear the "megamix" of all the tracks. Plus, I like
the way those to games kept the same snare and bass drum samples. Those
games' soundtracks had a lot of NRG and that added to Sonic's attitude
and the fast pace theme of the game.

Best music. Hmmm. Hard to choose 1. Here are my faves.

NES: Ninja Gaiden 2, esp. 1st board and Maze of Darkness1
MM3: Just about the whole game
MM4: Wily's first stage
Castlevania 3: Whole game good, best Blk 8

SNES: MMX: All except Armadillo Stage. Best Chill Penguin, Spark Mandrill,
Flame Mammoth, Storm Eagle, intro stage and 1st sigma stage
Castlevania4: All except stage 2 and 6
Dracula X: All
SSF2: Cammy, Ryu, Ken, Guile, Fie Long, And Balrog's stages
FF2: Most of game
FF3: Most of game, Celes's, Shadow's, Locke's, Terra's, Opera, Atma, WOB map,
Final Battles, and juced up charecter music were the best.
Valus IV: Except stage 4
Battletoads, Double Dragon
Battletoads, Battlemaniacs
RUN SABRE: 2nd board and Flame Sabre
FFMQ: Battle Music, Boss Music, Doom Castle, Dark King

There's a lot more, but I can't think of them offhand.
