I bought an N64 (finally) this past summer, and I have been enjoying quite a
few of the games it has to offer. Although a lot of the games aren't
graphically perfect, the gameplay really keeps me raring for more. I must
admit, I'm a fan of SNES 2D a little more, but I'm getting used to this 3D
set of games. What I wanted to say was I recently picked up two games that
I'm really dissapointed with. The first is 'Top Gear Overdrive', which I
think may speak for itself in how bad the title is. The second is "The New
Tetris". I'm a HUGE tetris fan, but this game just destroys any fun or point
to playing. Where your piece will fall is displayed at the bottom of the
playing screen .. thereby taking out any fun .. essentially, you can't mess
up. Plus, as far as I can tell, there's no way to turn the option off. It's
dissapointing that a company could wreck such a good title .. by destroying
the gameplay. I don't know, I guess I'm just dissapointed with that.
The other title that I'm sort of dissapointed with is 'Zelda: Majora's
Mask". After all the hype, and after it looked and sounded so good, it just
isn't doing it for me. I mean, this three day thing is really getting to me.
I like to enjoy the game, and go through slowly, finding things, and
experimenting. This game really takes away from the enjoyment I could have
had with it. I feel like I'm rushed, and I have to do things in a quick,
fast order, almost like a movie. The whole reason I love N64 games is that
they don't follow movie type plots (like many Playstation games I feel do),
and they don't have movies or anything fancy. Just fun games .. and this new
Zelda really detracts from that. I enjoy the first Zelda immensely though.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? There have been a lot of quality
titles for the system, and lately, I feel I'm just picking up lemons. I'd
appreciate any suggestions anyone may have for some good games to pick up.
As a reference, I've got '1080 Snowboarding' , 'Waverace 64', 'Pilotwings
64', 'Bomberman 64', 'Donkey Kong 64', 'Mario Kart 64', 'Castlevania',
'Kirby 64', 'Goldeneye 007', 'Mario Party 2', 'F-Zero X', 'Perfect Dark',
'Super Mario 64', 'Super Smash Brothers', 'Zelda: Ocarina of Time', and
'Zelda: Majora's Mask'.
Is there anything else?
-Cj.
I see from your list that you got the best games that the system has to offer.
You might also want to check banjo-kazooie(similar to DK64).

I think Majora's Mask is getting a bad rap from people that don't
really understand how to work with the time limit. Because - really -
it's NOT a time limit.
By creating a 72 hour window, it allowed Miramoto to create a 'living
world', with only three days of scripted actions by the NPCs. This
allows for some really interesting time related side-quests, and allows
the dynamic of time to be felt more fully in the game.
Many mechanisms are provided to navigate time - you can go all the way
back, you can slow the speed to half, you can go forward in half day
increments, you cna go forward in 2 hour increments, you can go forward
whole days - the eliminates sitting around and waiting to a large
degree, which could have been a problem.
A little bit of planning goes a LONG way, and once you find a dungeon
in Zelda, I STRONGLY suggest a save/reset to the first day, play the
slow time song, and get you ass to work. You will have plenty of time.
Once in a dungeon, you get your recomended daily dose of classic Zelda
gameplay...
Personally, I love Majora's Mask, perhaps even more than Ocarina of
Time. (A Link to the Past is still my #1 Zelda). Majora's Mask escapes
the 'homage' Ocarina was to prior Zeldas, and comes into its own via
this very unique mechanism.
I still don't understand why you have to loose inventory items, mind
you...
And you need to completely overlook the inherint paradoxes of time
travel (i.e. why time travel is not possible), but that goes with any
time travel story...
Anyway, my defense of what I feel is a great game...

Before you buy.
Well, you where a long time coming, but welcome to the world of the N64!
I bought an N64 shortly after its release. Although I have been a bit
annoyed at the general lack of games for it, the ones that are good have
been VERY good. I agree, the graphics do look dated know, but the gameplay
still shines through - hence me still having a blast on Goldeneye, even
though I have got Perfect Dark (which is better than Goldeneye by the way -
you just have to get back into it).
I personally loved The New Tetris, I thought the extra ways of scoring where
a good adition, as was the way you can unlock the extra stages.
I also still enjoy the Mario games, despite people's criticism of the
'cutesy' look - again, I look to the gameplay. Mario Kart is still a
fantastic four player game. A quick glance at your games list seems to
confirm that you like your games - I pretty much own (or have owned) the
ones you listed.
a) it's Miyamoto
b) his involvement in the creation of Majora's Mask was VERY minimal.
But otherwise I agree with everything you said :-)

For adventure/shooter I'd recommend Jet Force Gemini and Turok: Dinosaur

Regarding Majora's Mask: It might grow on you. I've come to like it a lot
while I was iffy about it initially. Once you can slow time down to half
speed, the time issue is much less of a problem. But it is harder than
OoT, IMO.

Give it more time, it isn't as good as Ocarina, but it is pretty good.
The 72 hour thing rarely comes into play, and isn't that much more of a bother
then the day/night thing in Ocarina. If you play the song of time, and then
slow time everytime you reach an owl statue you have plenty of time.

Actually this famous Zelda creator had very *little* involvement with
the Majora Mask.

You are missing what I believe are the two best games on the system.
Rocket: Robot on Wheels and Banjo Kazooie. I highly recommend them.

Then look for a game called Mischief Makers. It's a 2D platformer from
the team that did Contra 3 and Castlevania IV for the SNES. It came out
a couple of years ago, so it should be heavily discounted by now.
<snip>
> The other title that I'm sort of dissapointed with is 'Zelda: Majora's

Majora's Mask is the first Zelda game that Shigeru Miyamoto didn't
really work on. He stopped producing N64 games after Zelda 64: Ocarina
of Time to focus on the upcoming Gamecube.

I'd recommend picking up Banjo Kazooie if you liked Mario 64. It's much
better than Donkey Kong 64. Part 2 is coming out in a week or so, but
the first one should not be missed. The same goes for Rayman 64. Both
games are must-haves if you like 3D platformers.
WAY plenty of time. I've been going through slowly, and am done with
everything I can do at this point after beating the second temple. So far each
of the temples took me about 1 or 2 days at most, and then after I beat it, I
save back to the first day, do a thing or 2 directly related to me beating the
temple, save back to the first day, and then get all the fairies in the temple.
>Personally, I love Majora's Mask, perhaps even more than Ocarina of
>Time. (A Link to the Past is still my #1 Zelda).
Ditto! Though I'd enjoy MM a lot more if I didn't have school. With Ocarina I
cut a few classes and worked through a weekend to beat it. I can't afford to
fail any more classes though, so I'm taking my time on this game.
>Majora's Mask escapes
>the 'homage' Ocarina was to prior Zeldas, and comes into its own via

Though all the classic creatures (Leevers and Like-Likes) are really giving me
a nastalgic feeling. I'm just pissed that they didn't call the bats Keese.
One thing is, the 3 day system kinda overwhelms me when I think of going to
play it and I don't have much time. I don't wanna play for a half hour and
have to stop in the middle of a day and forget what I was doing next time I go
to pick up the game. So generally I only play it if I know I have over an hour
to play, or I know I just wanna run around and experiment.

Good day. May I highly suggest you try the following games:
Tetrisphere-The New Tetris may blow, but Tetrisphere is the most
ass-kicking puzzle game the world has ever seen. Add to that the fact
that the soundtrack is the best on the Nintendo 64, and you have a real
winner. Highly recommended for puzzle game fans.
Blast Corps-I think this is one of the best games on the Nintendo 64, on
par with Super Mario 64 and just below Zelda (the first one, I haven't
played Majora's Mask yet). Original gameplay and an excellent
soundtrack as well as a sense of humor (check out the A-Team van). It's
a bit short, but it's a hell of a ride.
Mario Tennis-Mama Mia! I'm a-gonna win! I hated Charles Martinet in
Super Mario 64, but he's sort of funny here. This is the best tennis
game I've ever played (although I haven't played very many tennis
games). Loads of fun single-player and multi-player.
Also try Diddy Kong Racing if you like racing games. It blows
multiplayer, but the single player quest mode is entertaining and
challenging.
There are other good games but these are the best of the best. Good
luck to you.

For example, I've just started playing and finished the first dugeon but
I've only managed to find 13/15 faries. I've searched up and down for
the last two and I'm basically tired of looking with time running out.
When time runs out I lose all 13 faries I found and I have to start the
dugeon all over from the begining. Which means I have to go through
beating the minor boses, relighting the torches, and relocating the the
13 faries I found before.
This is stressing me so much, I'm almost forced to look at a FAQ or
Guide which I normally never do for any game, just to find the last two
faries before time runs out. I just don't want to go through the entire
dungeon again.
Other than that the time thing is a pretty neat idea. It just needs a
few modifications like maybe a mode where you can freeze time in the
dugeons.

Warning about Rocket. It was and remains the only game ever to give me
motion sickness. I've yet to understand why but I can't play the game
more than 30 minutes at a time.
--Sam
I think that if you warp to dawn of the first day, slow time down, then warp
as close as you can to the temple entrance, you should have PLENTY of time
to find all the fairies without running out of time. I'm not even bothering
with the fairies on my first time through each dungeon.
The camera can be a little strange. They tried to program it to give the best
view going into new areas, and if you try to manually adjust it as you come
around a corner or something, it can go completely out of whack.
I have all but 1 of those games but there are a few I think you have missed out
on.
Diddy Kong Racing, Excitebike, Mario Golf, Banjo Kazooie and WWF No Mercy.
Banjo Kazooie 2 and Indiana Jones are due out later this month.
I'd also be VERY interested in Spiderman if I hadnt already grabbed it for PSX.

You have learned to slow time, right? Otherwise I would just have to say that
if you are having this much trouble finding the faries in the first dungeon
then you need to pad your room before you do the other three, things could get
violent.

I did not find a way to go forward in 2 hour increments nor go forward whole
days. Where in the game are those techniques taught?

Actually the statement was slightly misleading. You don't learn the
abilityt to advance 2 hours. Rather, you'd need to talk to someone's
grandmother to waste 2 hours.
That was it, the beehives. Actually, I beat the dugeon easily on the
first day but I spent nearly the whole second day looking for those last
two faries. Then when I finally find them, all I get is the power-up
swing.

None of the fairy stuff is essential to the game. Pretty much the same stuff
you got from them in Ocarina, except the last one. Which gives you something
kind of neat, similiar to something you got in another place from another
person in Ocarina.

He was the project director or something. He wasnt actually involved in the
day to day development. He just monitored progress etc after the initial
game spec was drafted. It shows too. The game has a completely different
feel. As I understand it he is being moved away from actual game
development, giving more responsibility to his development teams. I do think
that he is more involved with the next Zelda game though.
