I recently picked up Donkey Kong 64, but have found the game very tedious. I
really enjoyed Super Mario 64 and I thought DK would be great because it was
a 3D platformer but with even bigger levels. But I'm finding that it's kind
of a chore to play through. I'm about 46% of the way through, and I'm at the
level that you have to swim to to access. It's got the pirate ships. Any
thoughts or opinions?

it's a boring game whose main theme of play is collecting for collecting's
sake. it's tedious, dreary and a lot of work with little reward. if you want a
3D patformer, go pick up Banjo-Kazooie... it's a LOT better than DK, and in
fact, i'd say it was the best 3D platformer so far.

I don't know, I personally liked DK better than BK. Mostly because I didn't
have to collect all the bannanas/notes all in one trip through the level,
and that you weren't limited in the time you could spend underwater.
(Clankers Cavern was a pain in the butt for me.) I didn't mind the extra
collection in DK, just because I could do it in as short of streches as I
need too. I enjoy running around a level (somewhat, it was a little
overdone, but it wasn't the nightmare to me that it was to others).

Not only is it tedious, but some sections are frustratingly hard. Having to
beat the original Donkey Kong game twice to get a coin to be able to finish
the game. And don't even get me started on some of the ridiculously difficult
minigames. I still haven't been able to beat the scarab race in the crystal
caves. At about 85% done and 30 hours in, I'm just finishing this game out of
spite.

What is the "scarab race"? I've pretty much beaten Crystal Caves. Also,
here's my opinion. The original Donkey Kong game in Frantic Factory is
tedious. I've tried many times to beat it, and have gotten to the third
level. I have over 100 golden bananas in DK64.

Well that because the game sucks IMO. I played a few hours and nearly fell

Of course. Someone with your intelligence level (sub-chimp) would probably have
difficulty with it.

My reaction also, and I'm a major fan of platformers. I'd agree with
another poster that Banjo-Kazooie is superior to DK (in terms of
enjoyment), though I imagine you've already played it...but if not you
should definitely check it out. You may also want to try Rocket: Robot
on Wheels, if you can find it, which may be the best platformer available
for the N64. DK64 isn't even in the top five, IMNSHO.

I love the game about 80% of the time. I'm completely pissed at
it the other 20%. For the most part it's the perfect level of
easiness/difficulty, but then they toss an incredibly
tedious/hard/impossible minigame at me and I start yanking hair.

I hated that stupid beetle race the first time and was fuming
when I saw that I needed to race the little idiot again, but with
it being more difficult.

Anything involving Diddy's rocket booster had me cussing up a
storm. I have never been good at things like that, so "flying"
through the rings was damn near impossible for me.

And as of now I completely hate the original arcade version of
DK. I hate it. I can't beat that stupid thing for the life of me.
I get to the third level and die, never fail. Now I find out I
need to beat it twice, grrrrrr.

But there is far more things about the game that I love. And call
me crazy, but I love all the collecting. And to be honest, there
really isn't all that much to collect. Sure it sounds like a lot
when you read about it, but when I'm playing through the game
it's not even something I think about.

Out of spite! LOL! I'm going to finish the game also, but just not as
fervourently as I normally would a platformer. I'm finding the minigames
increasingly difficult. I don't always want to play them, but I also don't
want to go all the way back later to complete them. I guess DK64 is too much
of a good thing, so to speak. I can understand why they wanted to make a
huge game with gigantic levels, but sometimes less is more.

You know, I've never fully played BK, but I'm going to. I've been meaning
to, but I picked up DK because it was newer release (I'd scored a used
copy).

One thing I wanted to mention was that Rare's considered the platform king,
but I will say again that I really enjoyed Super Mario 64. I wish Miyamoto
made more platformers for the N64 instead of letting Rare handle all of
them.

I have to agree with the sentiments of this post. I enjoyed playing this
game for a while and then the increasingly difficult sub-games put me off.
I haven't completed either of the beetle races or any of the rocket booster
ones and I don't think I ever will! I only completed the original DK game
once and I haven't got very far in the Jet Pack game. I haven't played it
for a while so maybe it is time to try some of them again.

I am also considering buying Banjo Kazooie.

The scarab race is the race against the beetle in the castle type
building that you enter with Lanky by stomping a blue switch his picture
on it, then doing a couple of his "inflate and float" pads.

This mini-game is the only one I haven't been able to beat. While the
one with Tiny was tricky and took a LOT of tries to beat, it is
definitely beatable.

I've played to the final boss, but I'm trying to get all the golden
bananas before I tackle the ending. I've got 199 golden bananas, and
I've been trying and trying to beat the beetle race in Crystal Caves to
get the last banana, but I'm not even coming close so far. Has anyone
beat this yet?

BTW, the Donkey Kong arcade game, level three, definitely the hardest
level, is not all that difficult once you figure out the pattern. Being
an old geezer, I remember the original, so that probably helps I guess.

I seem to remember that the max number of gold bananas is 201.

It's perfectly beatable, so long as you have the orangu-sprint move for
the straight parts. Once you've learned the track, so long as you avoid
colliding with the beetle, it's a doddle.

I have to admit that the sub-games are pretty dang hard for me as well. The Jet
Pack game isn't too bad. I tend to stay on the top in the middle of the screen,
so I have enough time to dodge or shoot anything flying on my level. Anything
flying an an angle, you can just dodge and it eventually hits the ground. Once
the rocket is built and fueled and you have the requisite number of points, go
to the rocket and it will take off for the next screen. At that point, you can
die.

I did manage to do the first beetle race. I can't imagine how many tries that
one took. I also have a car game, a bug smash, and two beaver bother games to
complete.

The rocket booster games were trying a bit. The Aztec one wasn't too bad, but
the other one was starting to get to me. I kept hitting this one branch by gong
up too high and getting knocked to the ground.

So I discovered a bit after posting my original complaint! My mistake
was that I turned the orangu-sprint off after the initial straight bit.
It hadn't occurred to me that I could leave it on for the sliding part
and then have it active again when I got to another running straight
part.

However, it's still not the easiest, even with the orangu-sprint, as you
can't miss many coins, and as you said, avoid bumping into the beetle
during the slide parts,as losing any coins will make it highly unlikely
that you'll win. I just barely made it with exactly 50 coins. Perhaps a
doddle over in the U.K., but not to me over here in mid-America! :-)

Now I have one more fairy to find, and then I'll have all 201 golden
bananas.

And as far as the game being tedious,, I haven't found it to be tedious
in the least.

Annoying, occasionally, such as when the camera won't go where I want it
to, or gets hung up on something, or when I couldn't figure out how to
beat a mini-game (chasing the beavers into the hole took me quite some
time to develop a winning pattern, too), but overall, I'm really
enjoying the game.

For my taste, Rare makes the best games for the N64 (eclipsed only by
Zelda 64, IMHO), although I do have some complaints. I found the game
show type contest at the end of Banjo-Kazooie to be very annoying, and
the final fight with Gruntilda was a challenge, to say the least.

Jet Force Gemini was great except for terrible camera control on a
couple bosses, and I found the final boss to be so difficult that it
wasn't fun. I finally beat it, but it was an act of determination and
not because I was enjoying it.

So I'm eagerly awaiting Banjo Tooie, Conker's BFD, Dinosaur Planet,
etc., as well.

Thanks,

but the rocket booster ones just seem impossible to me!! I cannot control

Yeah, DK64 was a pretty good game, but the levels started getting
extremely unimaginative. The first two were great, as I got everything, I
couldn't take the caves, the last time I saw the levels so drab was
Centipede for atari. The boss was a pretty good idea, that was a cool
pick-me-up. Other than that, good luck staying intrested.

Yeah, spite. A few of minigames have *REALLY* pissed me off, but I've
already put so much time in to the game that I *AM* going to complete it.

For the most part, I'm enjoying myself. I enjoy the collecting parts and
at first the minigames were an interesting diversion from the main game.
But they've become difficult to the point of frustrating. It's definitely
a Love/Hate thing.

I guess practicing would be my first suggestion. Go to an area of the
game where you can fly around unmolested and try different things to get
a feel for the controls.

Don't hold the A button down constantly. You maintain your height by
alternately holding and releasing it. Use the Z button to hover in one
spot or to stabilize yourself when you're having control troubles.

Stay away from the walls or boundaries of the area you're in if you can,
as sometimes you can sort of get stuck there for some reason. If this
happens, face toward the wall/boundary and try to fly backward away from
it.

I hope this helps. Sorry, there's no real trick to it, just work on it
'til you get a feel for it, then it's not very difficult at all.

Good luck,
