I got word about someone (but this probably isn't the
first) trying to pawn off stuff as rare Atari memorabilia.
To make things even worse, his girlfriend is pulling an
old trick called Shill Bidding (basicly doing a little
out-bidding to raise the stakes).
This is being done by a Mr. Rich Tsukiji and his girlfriend,
Shirl. His email address is: tsu...@jps.net. And his girlfriend
is at: bonave...@juno.com.
Rich is putting stuff up for sale and making it sound like a
rare item. Then his girlfriend is making bids to help increase
profit. Below is an example of a bid history on an item. You
will notice her email address. Why would she bid on an item
if she's his girlfriend???? I bet she could care less about
rare Atari items.
Bidding History (in order of bid amount):
stealthv (stea...@hotmail.com) (1) <Picture: mask>
Last bid at: $51.01

shirl (bonave...@juno.com) (1)

Date of bid: 10/25/98 23:49:13 Pacific Standard Time
dske...@accesscom.net (0)

Last bid at: $10.00
Date of bid: 10/21/98 19:37:05 Pacific Daylight Time
And it gets even better. Here is an example of one of his so
called rare items (fraud):
Title of item: Atari - Activision Mouse Pad - Rare Collector
Seller: tsu...@jps.net
Starts: 11/02/98 21:16:24 PST
Ends: 11/10/98 21:16:24 PST
Price: Starts at $9.00
To bid the item, go to:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=39650716
This is one of his current auctions, Item #39650716, and is for a
rare mouse pad from Electronic Arts that was given away at a trade show
years ago. Or so he claims!!
There are two things that I notice that don't jive.
First is the title. Activision Mouse Pad.
But in the body he says that Electronic Arts was giving these
away (in 1981!!!). I just checked Electronic Arts web page, they were
founded in 1982. How could they be giving away stuff at a show when
they didn't exist yet!!! And what would EA be doing making stuff about
Activision products?
Second is the year, 1981. What company during that time was making
mouse pads? Mouses were not even mainstream computer hardware at that
time. The first computer that hit the market that used a mouse around the
early '80s (that I recall or know of) was the Apple Lisa. A $10,000 boat
anchor. Seems like a waste for a company to make something, and give
away, that most people at the time couldn't use for quite some years.
I believe the people in the Apple engineering labs and Xerox PARC
facility probably could've used them with the stuff they were designing
at the time.
I don't know the name of the individual who designed these pads, but he
just started designing them this year. Rich Tsukiji is well aware of this
fact as he recently obtained these at the World of Atari show in August of
this year.
Again the item #'s that the above mention fraud/shill bidding is occurring
with are: 37219684, 37227816, and 39650716
We need to make people aware of this. Atari collectors don't need to be
lied to and swindled. And it's a shame, because Rich was the founder of
the World of Atari shows. He was one of the individuals responsible for
putting on this years show.
Ebay has been emailed on these actions of fraud. But hasn't responded
to this date. If anyone wanting to report fraud or comment about the above
fraud actions can email them at:

I think Lisa was released in '83. That blows the seller's any hope that
the mouse pad could have been used in '81.
That's one reason to beware of anything claiming to be "rare" If you
see something you've never heard of or if in doubt, check all Atari
FAQ's. If you can't find it and no one in this NG ever heard of it,
it's probably a fake.
The mouse pad and other merchandise could have been easily faked. For
example, www.iprint.com offers custom mouse pads and many other stuff.
I recently had a mouse pad printed there for free, and with a little
graphical know-how, any one could have a good looking fakes.

Obviously, the seller never knew about the reserve auction. He could
have polacd a reserve. Then he'd be able to refuse to sell if the final
bid never reached the reserve. This seller should deserve a neg
feedback for this.
Wasn't that mouse pad a promotional item from activisions atari hits #1
pack?
Or wait, the game vault #3 they have that has all the emulated atari and
commodore games? I recall seeing pads with those classic activision box scans
like pitfall and river raid.
Btw, mice were available as pointing devices for terminals like x-windows back
in 83.

On 11/04/98 at 12:13:50 PDT, seller added the following information:
I have been advised that the above mousepad is of the game by Activision
called "Pitfall" and that the game was not introduced until Summer of '82 at
Chicago CES. Therefore, I have no idea where, when and how the mousepad was
distributed. If you have bid and this updated information affects your
decision, please email me and I will void your bid. Thank you.

Want another flaky auction? check out
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=39655250
and you'll see a Virtual Boy system "mint" (I'd like to see "Mint",
since it can be truely "mint" if the box has never been opened) with a
Mario Tennis. It is at $20.51 with 4 days left and there has been 37
bids. I kept track of that since the beginning because I reconized the
seller's email addy and from the first day, there was 30 bids already.
The timing of the bidders were too close together to be coincidence.
I've been in eBay long enough to know "mint" Virtual Boy with tennis
game rarely sells over $15-20 and rarely get over 10 bids. To get more
than 10 bids on the first day would be unusual and to get 30 bids on the
first day is rather fishy. Checked the past auction to confirm this.
Right now, this item stinks of a 2 year old fish. I am posting this to
sup...@ebay.com for suspicious auction.
True, and I believe they first appeared in the '60 or early '70's but
they were not widely used in consumer market until after Windows 3.x
came out. That mouse pad in '81 is still pretty much useless and are
likely a fake anyway, or they are not from '81.
Mouse pads were already firmly entrenched in many homes long before
Windoze 3.x came out...

Yeah, I think your right on that. I do recall seeing the initial showing
of the
Lisa at a Applefest in San Francisco (or was it a West Coast Computer
Faire?) with the Lisa having a new device called a mouse.

Information is power. And lack of it as a collector can cost you. Good
advice.

Actually, that one is a sample made early this year. A sample was given
to one of the retailers at the show to see if he was interested in selling
them.
Somehow, Rich got his paws on it and obviously decided to try and line his
pockets with some collectors money.
The Atari community on the internet is a great community to belong to. And
I hate seeing people like this take advantage of us and spread false
stories.

I saw these mousepads at World of Atari as well...he obviously isn't smart
enough to fess up when he's been caught... For that matter they are likely
illegal copies of the Pitfall! picture to make a few bucks on...hell, I could
have bought these and resold them, but some of us have a moral or two...
There is an ad in DPG #5 (near the end, right before the Psychopedia)
for these mousepads and a few other products. However that guy isn't
pretending they are vintage merchandise.

Yes, windows 1.1 and windows 286 and windows 386 all sold a version that came
with a mouse. I have an original microsoft mouse with a metal ball and a bus
card for the PC/XT from 84 or 85. Windows 3 wasn't until 90.
Wouldn't happen to have a good copy Windows v1.0 would you?

eBay won't get involved. In fact they have a policy of protecting
crooked sellers. Click here to read the facts:
http://freedombyfaith.com/MARKET/Sabotaged.html
Try out Yahoo auctions. they are free to all so you can start the
auction where you think a fair price is, without incurring huge
listing fees.
They are not as slick as eBay but they are big enough to get buyers,
and if you get a phony bidder, you can simply relist the item later.
I had a complete windows v 1.1 and a even older complete MSdos 1.1 that went
swimming in a basement flood. They never dried out right and I had to throw
them away. Microsoft wanted 30 bucks for replacement disks so I never did
replace them.
