And some thrift stores would see those prices and think they were the
real values, and would price our games out of reach for too many of us.
Those days are generally behind us, with rares now selling on eBay for
less than pre-ebay newsgroup auction prices.
Then, a couple nights ago, I walked into a thrift that at one stretch in
the 90's was so great for me that I never walked out empty handed from
that store, sometimes visiting it as much as 2-3 times a day, Of
course, that faded man y years ago, but I still shop there, though now
days with far less frequency. I was looking for kitchen stuff for my
bro- and sis-in-law, who are moving into their first apartment. I
eventually made my way to the display counter/cash register area, where
I first found a lamp style iMac g4, $199. Could be reasonable. Let's
see, 256K? Yikes! 40 Gig drive, small by todays standards. 700-Mghtz
cpu, slow. Too slow for leopard. CD-RW. Needs to be replaced. So
that would mean about $150 to bring it up to Tiger, and the cpu cannot
be upgraded. No, for that configuration, too much money. But I can't
say that they are necessarily out of line. On 25% off Tuesdays, someone
might feel it is worth $150. Not me, but someone.
Then I directed my attention to the Atari next to it. I asked to see
the 16 carts. The rarest title was Space Jockey, a U on the old VGR
list, and of course plenty of the OCs like Combat, Pac-Man and Frogger,
and Cs like Black Jack and Breakout. The machine had two Atari black
joysticks, two paddles and 1 third party joystick (bright colored,
pistol trigger on top stick, no thumb button on top of stick).
Everything was loose. Looked like it did have p/s, but no game switch
(though who would need that today). Price of package is $174.90.
Sorry guys, but the daze when SumGuy (Some guy who wants to beat me to
it, and then turn around and sell it to me for a profit) are long gone
on these. Not even on eBay could this package break $50.
I'll watch to see if and when they lower the price and/or eventually
sell it, but I anticipate a lot of dust bunnies added to it.
