EA is god of sports. Not of game systems, of sports. Why isn't 3DO a
million seller? Name just barely known, high price tag, and lack of
titles that are well known to people but they are getting better. EA has
helped 3DO sell so many more systems, so they are doing something about
the status of 3DO.

But one thing is for sure. Jaguar needs Electronic Arts. If Jaguar had
Electronic Arts behind it, there would be over 1 million Jaguar sold by now.

I orginally bought my Genesis in order to play John Madden Football and
most of my friends bought Genesis machines because of the NHL hockey games
that EA has made (as opposed to SNES's because the Genesis versions are
superior).

I don't think "1 million Jaguars" was meant literally. But then,
3DO has sold over half a million....quite a few more machines than Jag has. I
recently bought a 3DO as well, mainly for EA's stuff. Not only did they make
FIFA, but Need for Speed, Road Rash, and ShockWave as well. Have you guys
seen all these? They're nothing short of incredible, IMO.
According to Trip Hawkins in a mag interview I just read, there are
about 300,000 3Do's sold -- two-thirds of those sales being in Japan.
Surprising that the U.S. sales are _that_ close to the Jag's, but
that's from the horse's mouth. :)

There was a press release in mid December, from 3DO, that stated that
over 500,000 3DO's have been sold. The 300,000 is an old figure.
I expect it to be higher at the WCES, when they count in Goldstar and
Creative Labs.
chris
Actually, I meant it literally. This is because Jaguar only costs $250.
If Jaguar had Electronic Arts as a developer in addition to DOOM, Alien Vs.
Predator, Iron Soldier, etc. There would have been over 1 million Jaguars
sold by now. I think the only reason 3DO systems are selling is because
of Electronic Arts.
It is just unfortunate that EA can't make at least THREE games for the Jaguar.
FIFA Internation Soccer, John Madden Football, and Road Rash. If you throw
in soccer, we are taling another couple hundred thousand. <g>

Like anyone's gonna be dumb enough to spend:
3do Blaster: $399
Creative CD: $150
SoundBlaste: $100
$649
on a 3do compatable player.
At least they could have made it affordable and not require their own
products to do it.

Doesn't the 3DO has the backing of EA which hasn't sold over a million 3DO's.

You are right about that. But if the President of Electronic Arts keeps
getting mail from Jaguar owners asking him to make games for the Jaguar,
he may change his attitude. Especially if sales haven't been exactly fantastic
for the 3DO. I wonder how many EA titles are being sold in Japan?

mmm... but according to a few Panasonic reps, 3DO sales for the holiday
season *have* been fantastic. Even above what was predicted as the
'best case scenario'. Hopefully we will know for sure after WCES.

I would tell everyone my sales have been fantastic too if everyone was
considering delaying finishing games for the 3DO. Especially with the cost
increase of each game by 3DO. I think it now costs $4 to make a game now
instead of the $3. But 3DO states that they will increase it to $6 shortly.
So... they could have lied.
And I wouldn't call sales of 500,000 systems exactly fantastic. They did
plan to have well over 1 million sold by now. And that was at the price of
$600!

Actually, he promised $10-$30 titles because "the manufacturing process
for a CD is $1". The 3DO - Hip or Hype? article archived on wired.com
had the sordid details, including the amazing quote "3DO is not a games
box".
In other words, predictions mean nothing. :)

Rubbish, EA are totally overrated, only a couple of their games have been
really good and their games lack real depth and they have small penises.

I'd like to see the new sales figures, I bought a 3do 2 weeks ago have
had Jag for a year and today I wanted to buy an extra controller for 3do.
I have called every store in Orlando, not only did they sell all
controllers for the 3do but all systems and most games too. We're talking
large quantities here. Jag also did well according to these stores, Toys
r us sold out and said they had a waiting list. I'm really interested in
seeing the real numbers sold for both systems to date, hope they both
make it thru '95.
I buy all my games used now, we have 4 rent & trade type stores in my area.
Jag games go from 35-45 dollars used and 3do from 19-50 used. The best
thing is they let you try any game out for any system and you can rent
them as well.

Hmm, I thought the deal b/w Acclaim and Williams wasn't over until the end of
March. That's why I couldn't understand what he was waiting for...

You'd think if you pay $400 for a game system, they'd include two crappy
controllers instead of one.

Bullsh*t. Labor is every bit a part of the total cost of goods as is
the CD pressing. Marketting specific to the title is also part of the
cost of each package sitting on the shelf.

Perhaps, but first I'd question why you sidestepped the point of how
well they are selling >8^)
(btw. for my own observations, there are four different software stores
which I frequent in my area (two electronics boutiques, one babbages, and
a software etc. Fully *all* of them have told me that 3DOs were practically
flying of the shelves over the holiday season, and for my own observations,
I was regularly seeing them get in new shipments of games, only to have the
wall be totally picked clean by the next day. I intend to get to one of
these first thing tomorrow when the new shipments come in, so I don't
get left empty handed again ;) )
I haven't been keeping an eye on this newsgroup so this is kinda an old
post but I wanted to follow up on it.
I agree and disagree with the idea of EA not supporting the Jag because
of its connections to the 3DO but you have to keep in mind they are two
different companys and for a company to say they are not going to support
something just because they are biased you have to admit they are loosing
"would be" sales. I think if anything they aren't support the jag is
because of it's questionable sales records, and previous conflicts with
other companys (IE: Lynx and Software Etc.) I think those two reason are
what may make them a little hesitent. As for the reason for backing the
3DO right away from the start probably revolves around that fact the Trip
does have a connection.
