As someone else just pointed out, there is an eBay auction offering
Battlesphere "#1" at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=271778032

Here's what is says:

Seller: Hasborg (feedback 1)
Location: San Jose, CA
Ends: March 6, 1:37 PST
Minimum bid $10, Reserve met at current bid of $81 (whoops, that just
bumped up to $113!)
The very first copy of the long-awaited Atari Jaguar classic
BattleSphere, signed by the authors. They said this day would never
come: They were wrong. Who will be the first to own this legendary
title? All proceeds donated to diabetes research.

Here's what it shows:

I'm stunned. Am I to take it that this is being sold by 4-Play? Are they
going to outright sell any or will they be put up on e-bay one cart at a
time to the highest bidder? That'd really bite because while I may be
willing to buy one cart at $70 I'm sure not gonna become the high bidder at
$125+!

Wow! Just a few hours later it's up to $256 with no end in sight! I
wonder if this is a sign that they're giving up on ever produceing
Battlesphere & are dumping whatever test cart thingy's they may have had
made up to get whatever they can out of it? If this is the case & there
are a *VERY* few, or only this one which will be made available then we're
probably lookiing at the Chase the Chuckwaggon or Tengen Tetris of the
Jaguar. Maybe even rarer due to the hype surrounding this title & it's
legendary quality (at least according to the few lucky ones who've got to
see it at a show or something). There's sadly just no way I'm in the
position to get in on this action right now. $256+ is just *WAY* too much
for me now.

I'd like to make a plea to the lucky winner of this auction: Will you
please, please, please do everything you can as far as posting an in-depth
review of Battlesphere as I'm sure there are plenty of people in r.g.v.a.
who'd love to hear about this game.

I don't think this is the case. Over on JI2, T-bird has
mentioned a number of times that the current price of the chips
the need to make the game is prohibitively expensive. Basically,
they can't mass produce the game currently, because it would cost
too much to buy the chips.
However, from the looks of this, the encryption code has been
broken. So, it's my theory that since it would cost to much to mass
produce, they just made one finished copy, and put it up on ebay as
an experiment. So basically, hold your horses for a little while, and
the game will come out in force.
The other possibility is that they have started production of
the game already, and this is just the first one off the assembly line.
So they signed it and put it up on ebay as a collector's item. They
wouldn't put out the rest until they've finished production though.

It is clear from the information provided at eBay
that this cart is being auctioned for charity. All
proceeds going to a diabetes charity. I am sure
that this is a one-time auction and that other
carts will be sold in a regular manner. It *is*
wonderful news that the game is in production.

As of 10:30 am EST, the bid is at $415 with reserve met. At that price,
one would think they can afford to mass produce those carts using
expensive parts and still meet the $70 MSRP

Probably already been said, but, from the press-release:

A special autographed copy of BattleSphere(tm) is up for auction on
eBay right now. As an added incentive, the high bidder's name will be
digitally encoded into this very special collector's item.
BattleSphere(tm) will begin full-scale shipping soon afterwards.

It's now 8:10 am (centeral time) on Wednesday, March 1'st & the price is
a whopping $695! That's 10 times what the cart ought to cost! I hope for
chiguy's (the high bidder) sake he's a multi milionare with tons of cash
to spend. I honestly can't see four signatures on a cart even with it's
limited production run going for that much. Am I missing something?

Being that the auction is only a couple days old, I think it is a
foregone conclusion that this puppy will sell for over $1000. Just how
much over is the interesting question!

I'd bet on between $1500 to $2000, somewhere in there, considering that at
12:40 am Thursday, 3/2/2000, it's at $900 with no end in sight.

Prolly a good idea, as "chiguy" is currently NOT at number one, after all

Hey, I'm one of the bigest Jaguar & Atari in general fans anywhere around.
I'll sure buy Battlesphere in a heartbeat. But surly, you don't mean to
compair a game released for the Jaguar years after it's demise to these
products that were national obsessions with the little kiddies, do you?
If any comparison at all can be made wouldn't it have to be to someting
like Chase the Chuckwaggon or Tengen Tetris? Even then, those are rare
carts for *VERY* mane stream systems that there was lots of interest in.
somehow I'm just not seeing a signed Battlesphere cart selling for
anywhere near $1000 10 years from now. I fully admit that I could well be
wrong. I'm just amazed by this, that's all.

Actually, I think he hit it dead-on. BattleSphere is but one $40 million
dollar marketing campaign away from being as big as The Blair Witch Project,
or one Bryant Gumble endorsement away from being the next Tickle Me Elmo.

Would such a thing ever happen? Hell no, but national obsessions are based
100% on hype, not substance.

Actually it's legimate comparasion. I recall the time a Toys R Us
manager had to guard a stock of Cabbage Patch Kids with a metal baseball
bat. If there's a demand for something and the supply is very limited,
the price can easily skyrocket. Right now, there are at least 2 people
on eBay who both wants to get their hand on the first copy of
Battlesphere badly enough to pay up the 4 figures.

Remember when the actor of Pee Wee Herman got arrested for the (ahem)
unsanitary performance, and the line of Pee Wee toys were pulled from
shelves, the price went up. The more hype there is, the more value it
would. get. BS has been talked about for more than a year as the game
that almost didn't see the light.

Right, right. I guess the point I'm trying to make is two parts. First,
I don't think there are enough Jag fans now, or will be in the forseable
future, to generate the kind of mass media hype that would create anyting
close (I mean *nowhere* close) to the kind of hype that propelled Cabbage
Patch Kids, Elme, Pokyman, ect... to their level. Second point is that
yes, right now, before the game has been released (meaning that right now
I can't order it yet) there are a couple of guys on e-bay who'll shell out
$900 for it *but* I've gotta kind of doubt after the game has been
released for $80 a whack that they'll get very many takers who'll come
anywhere close to giving them $900 for it. That's just a speculation, who
knows. I cirtenly don't. In fact, they probably have no intention or
delusions of ever getting their money out of it. It's probably worth it
to them just to have it for themselves & good for them. I'm just
speculating that if they would want to get their money back out of it in
the years to come they'd probably have a tuff time of it. That's all.

Yes, but I'm still guessing that the number of people who are hyped about
Battlesphere to the poing where they'd pay $80, let alone $900, for it
have got to be pretty small to practicly none for $900. I wish 4 Play
(can't bare to use the new name :) all the luck in the world with it & I
do wish the hype was enough to sell a cart to everyone who bought a Jag,
heck, I wish there was so much hype that the demand for Jaguar's would be
so high it would motivate Hasbro to start production of units &
development of new carts but I just can't believe it'll come anywhere
close to happening. I wonder what kind of luck Songbird has had with his
games? Not that it's any of our business but I'd really like to know just
for the sake of it.

Vewerryyyy interesting. The search page on Saturday 8:01 CST is
showing the e-bay auction for BattleSphere to be at $2024.00 with 60
bids while the actual page is showing $1,225.00.

I told my wife it was at $2000 and her jaw dropped (we've been
monitoring the auction like everyone else). She flippantly said, "Why
don't you just make it 2001?" To play off the movie title.

I simply replied back with a smile (since that would more than wipe
us out) "Remember you said that when BattleSphere arrives.." :)

It's at $1525. As of 1:14AM Central Sunday morning.

I thought of putting in a bid, just to say I had bid on the classic
BattleSphere, but

a) I don't have the money, and knowing my luck, bidding would stall out and
I'd be stuck

b) I don't have a Jag to play the game on.

I discussed this exact same idea with my wife a couple of days ago, when
the bidding had hung at $900. I'd love to put a bid in, just for fun,
but I'd be really, really screwed if I ended up having to buy the game
at the price it's at now.

It's pretty neat to watch, though. <g>
